Lexington S.C. BBQ

Sep 14, 2022, 12:22 PM

I'm driving down from Seneca to Lexington on Friday, will be in that area at lunch time, any really good BBQ places there or nearby?

Farm Boys BBQ at the Chapin exit is pretty good. Also their buffet is good with fried chicken and veggies.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know about that! Shealy's is a great buffet, but

Sep 15, 2022, 9:16 PM

their BBQ is strictly average! Prices BBQ, just off Hwy 378 10 minutes west of Lexington has a small buffet, only about a dozen items. But two things are better than anything at Shealy's...their pulled pork and the squash casserole! Also, for Friday lunch and Saturday dinner, they have the best fried catfish fillets I have ever eaten!

You have Maurices Piggy Park in Lexington, Shealys in Batesburg, and several other places in Columbia (Docs BBQ, Mathias BBQ, Hometeam, etc). I'd probably recommend making the 20 minute drive or so to one of the locations in Columbia. Docs being my recommendation.

If we're talking Columbia, you'd be a food not to go to Little Pigs there. Their buffet is unbelievable, with the whole hog. Great hash too.

There’s also a Maurice’s in Irmo. Same as Piggy Park.***

Shealys is probably best in the area. Gotta go to NC to get any “really good” bbq.

Re: It’s SC, so no there aren’t any really good places, but

Sep 14, 2022, 12:37 PM

Maybe its because I grew up on homemade southern food...or the fact that it is a 15-minute drive from my house. I've just never understood the hype surrounding Shealys. Its decent but not anything spectacular in my personal opnion.

Unless you enjoy vinegar and peppers overwhelming the flavor of the meat.

A good rub, low and slow, and lots of smoke is all pulled pork needs.

Yes, pulled ... don’t even start with that chopped and diced stuff from “Down East” ...

Sep 14, 2022, 2:59 PM [ in reply to It’s SC, so no there aren’t any really good places, but ]

Hate to say this as a proud South Carolinian...but SC-style BBQ is disgusting to me. Might be that I hate mustard for any purpose other than as a burn ointment, but I can't do it. Have an ex-girlfriend who's mother was personally attacked when I wouldn't eat Maurice's with her, and when my brother and sister-in-law had Shealy's cater their wedding, I went by Rush's after we left to get some good food. I think western NC BBQ is where it's at. That said...I live in Knoxville now, and don't like the overly ketchupy BBQ sauce here, either.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It’s SC, so no there aren’t any really good places, but

Sep 15, 2022, 3:20 PM

You can't type that garbage and then call yourself a South Carolinian. And while I think mustard is the best, how dare you say that's the only SC style BBQ. We have 5 styles in different parts of the state. And then you call Rush's good food? Rush's is just a slightly better than average fast food restaurant. You're not a South Carolinian you Knoxville Yankee.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why does everyone seem to argue about the “sauce” ?

Sep 15, 2022, 8:27 PM [ in reply to Re: It’s SC, so no there aren’t any really good places, but ]

Sauce is just thevstuff you put on the meat after it’s served to you.

Find a place that simply smokes the pork low and slow 12+ hours and shreds it lightly.

If you must have sauce, then whatever sauce floats your boat.

Hudsons Smokehouse in Lexington, also highly recommended. Their hash might be their best product. So either Docs in Columbia or Hudsons in Lexington.

Shealy's is great but a bit of a haul from Lexington proper. If you are limited on time Hudson's is your best bet. Ditto the above hash comment. Their vinegar sauce is great and their mustard gold has a nice kick.

go to shealys but stick with a few items...........

Sep 14, 2022, 12:59 PM

go with pully bone fried chicken. they don't put it on the buffet, you have to ask for it. Your sides should be rice with white gravy and creamed corn. Just keep repeating those things. The bbq is ok and i don't recommend any of the hash. If you want hash go with the liver hash.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: go to shealys but stick with a few items...........

Shealy’s is great. Best hash and their buffet is great. The green beans and cream corn are outstanding. But it is a good bit of a drive if you’ve already driven from Seneca, then go to Batesburg-Leesville. Hudson’s isn’t as good as it used to be when Robin Hudson was alive. Food has gotten greasier and not as much taste.

Doc’s is good. Hite’s in West Columbia is really good, but only open on weekends I think.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree, their creamed corn is great...but green beans are

Sep 15, 2022, 9:32 PM

highly over rated...too salty and over cooked!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Lexington S.C. BBQ

Sep 14, 2022, 3:20 PM

IMHO Shealy's ratings are based on volume (all you can eat) and not necessarily the BBQ. Overall the food is good, but the BBQ is nothing special. It's more like meat wit a lot of sauce if that's what you like. The fried chicken is better than the BBQ in my opinion.

Hudson's in Lexington has much better BBQ with more of a true smoked BBQ flavor. If it's volume, go for Shealy's, if it's flavor, go for Hudson's.

Some of the others mentioned are not in Lexington or places I have not tried.

True BBQ

Sep 14, 2022, 3:39 PM

I'd have to say if you're in the Lexington area, West Cola to be exact, do yourself a favor and go get some True BBQ. It's as local as it gets. Looks like a dumpy place but it's the best I've ever had. Everything is good but best hash in the world.

If you are going to Lexington and want BBQ Buffet I would go to Hudson’s, driving all the way to Shealys for incrementally better food might not be worth the drive. If you like smoked chicken, Willy Jewells is a good choice even though it is a chain.

If you need to go into Columbia- Home team BBQ in 5 points is good
