Todd Ellis: Walk of Champions puts South Carolina fans in a tough spot

On Wednesday evening, Gamecock football play-by-play announcer, Todd Ellis, had some interesting comments during Will Muschamp's call-in show about Clemson's Wa Read Update »

Easy fix

Nov 21, 2019, 9:47 AM

The refs should throw a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct on the gamecoot bench.

Then when the next bottle is thrown, the whole coot team can go take a shower
and worry about their Christmas shopping.

Re: Easy fix

First object hits the field - 15 yard penalty. Eject the guilty party.

Second penalty - 15 yard penalty. Eject the guilty party.

Third penalty - 15 yard penalty. Games stops until you eject the guilty party.

If in 5 minutes, the guilty party has not been identified, eject the entire section before play resumes.

After the third incident, if more than one object hits the field, first and goal at the one. If the offending team has possesion, loss of possession at the spot of the ball, or 50 yard line, whichever is worse for the offending team.

Repeat as necessary.

If the object hits someone on the field, and the guilty party is not identified, Williams-Brice stadium is responsible for not maintaining a reasonable level of safety for fans and participants. Sue the stadium owners.

If Williams-Brice continues to have a problem (ie again this year), Clemson should petition the NCAA to enact strict rules on this type of conduct and minimum requirements for stadium security as far as identifying guilt parties. Clemson should do this for the safety of their own fanbase.

Or just put up a net at each end of the endzones, and one in front of the Clemson bench. And make it one of those nets where the weave is close and tight that makes it hard to see through. Punishment for the fans that do nothing when crap is being thrown. All the decent folks would have to do, is point out the ones that does it, and they be thrown out at once so they can't cause the ones that pointed them out any trouble!!!

Exactly my thought. Frankly, I am a little shocked to hear an adult say something like that on the radio. Players on a football field celebrating amongst themselves is not provocation, and if that puts you in a "tough spot," you need to grow up. Good lord, I enjoy seeing other teams doing such things; that spirit, brotherhood and joy makes the game great.

Those students, and especially Todd Ellis, need to grow up. It is a GAME!

Nov 21, 2019, 9:11 AM

No, fans are not the most rational people and yes, every fanbase has its nuts, but for whatever reason, UofSC fans always try to justify throwing things at opposing players. Todd Ellis is basically saying "We don't want to throw stuff, but it's hard not to when we see Clemson players in our endzone." Really?! South Carolina is the ONLY fanbase I have ever come across that acts this way.

The defense I usually hear from y'all is that it happens at a lot of other places, as Ellis even says. NEWSFLASH: IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AT A BUNCH OF OTHER PLACES. THIS ISN'T COMMON. Clemson does the Walk of Champions every game, home and away and has done it for over 10 years and UofSC fans are the only ones that can't refrain themselves from pelting our players and coaches with trash. "And if the roles were reversed you would be arguing the opposite." Total BS. Why is this so hard for your fanbase to grasp? It's a UofSC problem. Everybody else isn't doing this or defending it.

Back in the mid to late 80's, I took pictures for The Tiger, and traveled to all away games. While on the sidelines, I never wore Clemson gear or colors, but one cold night in Charlottsville, I was pelted by liquor bottles from the UVA frat section. No injuries or damage to the cameras, but one bottle did have some whiskey still in it.

I toasted the crowd and finished it off.

**FALSE**

Nov 21, 2019, 9:35 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Todd Ellis: Walk of Champions puts South Carolina fans in a tough spot ]

This is false and actually a self-defeating statement. One could say the same to you without substantiating it either ("if the roles were reversed YOU would be arguing the opposite").

Fact is, we're talking about fans **THROWING OBJECTS** FOR NO JUSTIFIABLE REASON. If the roles were reversed, if Clemson fans were throwing objects, en masse, regularly, at SC players, we would most certainly not be arguing that player displays of unity and celebration are provoking it. There is a difference between being incited on the one hand (not the case here), vs. simply lacking the maturity and self control necessary to be civil.

You guys absolutely would.

That’s the problem with this whole discussion. If the roles were reversed you would be defending the bottle throwing you and we would be calling it classless.

The reality is both sides are wrong but neither willing to admit it.

Funny, I don't recall Clemson fans throwing objects at coots in DV ever. Like, ever.

Don't even ATTEMPT to equivocate Clemson fans with that bunch of inbred, drunk morons who attend a 2nd class university from the midlands.

What really needs to happen is if objects are thrown, the dirtpeckers should automatically FORFEIT the game (you'll lose anyway, but still).

But I doubt that would make any difference for you bunch of classless idiots. It's more about the culture of your fanbase, which is trailer park redneck at its worst. Figures your mascot is a barnyard animal.

Nov 21, 2019, 10:42 AM [ in reply to Re: **FALSE** ]

hilarious!!! Carolina has a regular practice of doing this, in a concerted and malicious way, with objects actually thrown AT people. ON A REGULAR BASIS! You go find a one-off incident from a couple years back in which someone got pissed at a call and tossed a bottle on the field. Ha! If you see these as general, characteristic equivalents, then you may need to take a logic course and study the fallacy of equivocation.

I'm not defending the dude that tossed that bottle on the field, but if you think this is a whole sale equivalence of what typifies fan bases, then your analytical skills need work.

The argument is not that all fan bases don't have bad moments and bad eggs. Of course we all do, but Clemson doesn't have the Willy B redneck trash problem.

Re: **FALSE**

Nov 21, 2019, 1:17 PM [ in reply to Re: **FALSE** ]

One bottle vs dozens. Not comparable. Plus this was over a call not during pregame before you're getting your butt handed to you.

Plenty of fans have thrown trash at refs at different venues but the coots take trash throwing to another level.

And if we did have Clemson fans throwing objects,KICK EM OUT

Nov 21, 2019, 10:16 AM [ in reply to Re: **FALSE** ]

Same with overly drunk fans, kick em out. I for one don't want to sit next to a Clemson fan or any fan that is drunk out of his mind and cussing and acting like an idiot. Call security and have them removed. Thats how you fix this. You don't cow-tow and give in.

If someone is doing something that is potentially dangerous to anyone in that stadium they need to be kicked out and reprimanded. There is no excuse for it. And there is no remedy other than giving a warning to all about what the consequences will be and follow through. Have security boosted and watching and those poor souls that would like to test the system will be dealt with.

Hmmm . . . partially right and partially not

Nov 21, 2019, 10:48 AM

Having the players walk the length of the field and ending up towards the student section is not wrong, no if's and's or but's.

The taunting part? Hmmmm . . . I'm not a fan of that generally. That could be a bad look - or benign -- depending on what's done. If it's just the run of the mill rousing "hey, we're ready to play, give us your best shot" body language, then no harm, no foul. If Carolina fans can't tolerate that with a simple return counter (booing, waving them off, other benign verbal and taunts and motion), then that's on them. Nothing about walking to the student section and effectively beating your chest is responsible for suggesting or inciting the throwing of objects.

"Smelley, Garcia, and Beecher are going to lead you to 4-8." - york_tiger

LET'S JUST SUPPOSE . . . .

Nov 21, 2019, 12:09 PM

Let's just suppose that you're right that the ritual is wrong (sidebar: you're not right, as I described above and you did not respond to, there is a benign form of razzing and a non-benign form of it, and you are only able to keep insisting the celebration is wrong b/c you refuse to make that distinction - you seem to surmise that something is "wrong" if it ends up being poorly responded to - but this is to define infractions by the observer's lack of self-control, a perverse method of judgment by any moral standard) -- BUT BE THAT AS IT MAY, let's assume that Clemson's pre-game ritual is wrong. Even so, it's not dangerous - even if defined as "provocation" it certainly cannot be called incitement . . . there is no violence and nothing physically confrontational about it, there are no hurled objects etc. Thus AT THE VERY LEAST, at the **VERY** LEAST, it's beyond dispute that SC fans are ahem on the worse end of this comparison since they are taking a "wrong" (in theory) pre-game ritual and ESCALATING the matter into an actual physical confrontation.

But again - it's not wrong. You're logic reminds me of disciplining little kids . . . sometimes the bigger, older, more mature kid is asked to refrain from something which isn't in itself problematic, simply b/c the younger, more immature child is lacks perspective and self-control. If indeed you have to end up telling that child to refrain from some activity or talk in that case - it doesn't mean they were wrong, it simply means you are asking them to be the bigger kid and act in light of the other's immaturity. It's identical here ... The only argument that can be made that Clemson ought not to engage in this ritual - is not one that can be justified on the grounds that it's wrong, but rather (and exclusively) on the grounds that the receiving fan base is too wild and rowdy to take it in good-natured competitive stride.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: LET'S JUST SUPPOSE . . . .

Nov 21, 2019, 12:59 PM

Your child analogy is way off base.

Your walk is the equivalent of the kid at school antagonizing other classmates trying to be a bully. Then you make the bully the victim when he gets punched in the face.

But your posts are just highlighting my ultimate point. You guys aren’t looking at the situation rationally.

No, it's spot on . . .

Nov 21, 2019, 1:11 PM

less mature overreacts to a situation, starts throwing bottles and batteries, older child is told "hey, don't talk to him anymore, you can see he's all riled up." Obviously it's the battery thrower who's the problem, the other child is only being urged to hold back b/c the other is out of control. SPOT ON ON EVERY ELEMENT. And you said nothing to explain how it's otherwise.

You keep making unsupported claims and general statements that we're not rational, but you're not explaining how.

Like I said earlier - disagreements about the walk routine aside - even if we agree for the sake of argument it shouldn't be done - it's still inarguable that the fans, not the players, are the ones initiating it crossing the line from hand waving and chest beating into launching projectiles. *NOT ARGUABLE*. And YET, you are pointing the fingers at others as not being rational. You refuse to admit and acknowledge raw, obvious facts in front of your nose. Your dishonest accusations of irrationality falls back on you, as it turns out.

I have been at work and have just read this thread. Since I was born and raised in SC, I have many family members and friends that pull for the Gamecocks. Every one of them was totally ashamed and embarrassed with the trash throwing two years ago in Columbia. The two Gamecock graduates that are in my immediate family are upset at what Todd Ellis said last night. They said that no team should be expected to change their pregame ritual for the Carolina student section. They both also stated that they have never seen trash thrown at another venue like it is in Columbia. These are all good people that love their school. Many of them will be in their seats next Saturday proudly wearing their Garnet and Black. And I can guarantee you they will be calling out anyone throwing trash on the field, further embarrassing their school.

Clemson's "Walk of Champions" is not directed towards the USC fan base. It is their walk of unity and one of the ways they get pumped up. I guess with your thinking, they also taunt their own fan base when they do it at Death Valley. From the first time the walk was done before a Clemson/USC game, immediately the Carolina fans started claiming that it was done intentionally to intimidate your fans. Guess what, it is not about your fans!!. SMH.

Nov 21, 2019, 10:36 AM [ in reply to Re: **FALSE** ]

Bulls$hi(t), we are talking about decency and civility, not tribalism. You can't iron out all differences into nothingness with the tribalism bit. Clemson fans are every BIT as tribal as Carolina fans. That's not the issue. The issue is the civility.

Here's the thing. If we "fans" - generically, are all the same in every respect in how we express our tribalism, then by that logic, we would not only argue the same as yall if we were throwing bottles, but we would be throwing bottles and batteries, too! But we're not. I'd say the reason we wouldn't defend it is the same reason we're not doing it. The reason your fanbase defends it is for the same reason that they do it.

So, I guess you're right in a SENSE - if we were low enough to do such a thing, we'd probably be low enough to defend it too. But that's not the world we're living in. It's yall that do and defend it, not us.

I would think that the premier conference in all of College football would outlaw that type of behavior in a conference members venue! What is the SEC thinking about by allowing a bunch of drunk chickens to make a mockery of the whole conference! Small Paul should jump on this crap right away and get the commish and Timmy Tebow and other mouthpieces of such a great conference and outlaw such behavior...makes the whole conference look like a pile of chickenhouse litter! Cameras on the stands and expulsion with legal penalties of anyone chunking stuff onto the field or at players in the endzone etc...Makes the SEC look like a collection of hillbilly drunks! If they are going to the orange bowl...throwing oranges might be OK...but USC is going to the toilet bowl so plungers are inappropriate...so is toilet paper or in their case corncobs!

I never consided throwing things when Tannyhill "signed" the Tiger paw, and that is a heck of a lot more provocative than players celebrating. Well, as I said previously, maybe the PA can announce commencement of the walk and the student section can turn, kneel, and color (it’s ok if they can’t stay in the lines, it’s actually expected). Once over, the all-clear will be given. Besides, a Walk of Champions will just befuddle and eventually anger them. Like like chimps with Chinese handcuffs.

Exactly - Let's blame others rather than be proactive

Nov 21, 2019, 11:48 AM

If their fans/students can't behave, you make the other teams change their traditions to fit their needs. Basically, "DON'T PROVOKE US, OR ELSE..."

UofSC is trash and their actions with trash prove it. If you can't get your fans/students to act responsibly or act in a way that is representative of your institution:

1 - Remove the fans/students from the venue
2 - Modify their location so they can't act that way or aren't as visible
3 - Modify the location of where the other team enters the stadium
4 - Modify the side of the field that the opposing team warms up on
5 - Have your team settle it on the field and win a game
6 - Grow up

Many options, but Todd "Cycling Out" Ellis wants to whine to mommy like the little brother they are that big brother is teasing them and being mean. What a buffoon.

I have several friends that are former players - including a couple that were highly recruited and went on to play in the NFL (2 of them are current NFLers). I'm close enough with them - been friends for years, I've asked them all what kind of program we run. And all of them (and keep in mind a lot of them don't even know each other) have replied with some variation of "We are / Dabo is too clean" - that it's hurt recruiting, because of his refusal to continue on with the recruitment once conversations start getting a little questionable.

And keep in mind, I've heard the same things from my friends that were walk-ons and never saw the field as well as several highly recruited guys that were drafted.

The real question is... will they throw bottles at their own when they make "The Walk of Shame" out of the stadium during the middle of the second quarter?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

SO basically what Todd is saying

Nov 21, 2019, 7:39 AM

...because Gamecocks can't control themselves Clemson should stop their pre-game walk?

Placating THEIR bad behavior will only invite more of it. Terrorists and bullies everywhere agree.

When you cater to the lowest-common-denominator EVERYONE ELSE gets punished for a few bad apples. Why not just arrest every single person and band from the stadium (for life) anyone who gets caught throwing objects in the stands Todd? Problem solved.

Oh yeah, Todd. Try to justify it or minimize the sleaze by saying, "a lot of fans in other places do it". Really? I've been to many venues, and granted, ugay fans are about as bad, but that is very poor company with whom to associate behavior. Like saying, "the devil does it, too, so it must be okay".

Nov 21, 2019, 7:59 AM

since the patients are running the asylum down in that cesspool, and they clearly have no self control, place several members of the local law enforcement community directly in front of the endzone seating area. Anyone, and I mean ANYONE, who throws something towards field or the players on the opposing team, goes directly to jail. Problem solved.

In the meantime, in typical DirtPecker fashion, keep rationalizing and trying to justify the inappropriate conduct of your students and fans; effectively absolving them of any personal responsibility. That's ALWAYS a sure fire way to remedy the situation (rolling eyes).

Stupid idiots !!!!

The CFO at my old company was a Kentucky grad - got his bachelors and masters from UK. 5-6 years ago (whatever year that was), he went to Colonial Life Arena when his #1 ranked Wildcats played the cucks in basketball. He purchased courtside seats and was so excited to see them in nearly his backyard.

He and his wife got into an argument with some drunk guy sitting near them and near the end of the game, he said the guy walked up right in front of him and intentionally poured a beer all over him and his wife. My old CFO is a BIG guy and I have no doubt could have beat whoever up and down the sideline, but instead he went and grabbed a cop that was standing right at the edge of the court. And the cop escorted him and his wife out, saying "you should know better than to come in here wearing that stuff" (his UK shirt).

So, in situations like that - expect the cops to side with those inbred neanderthals..

Nov 21, 2019, 8:07 AM

1. This is the equivalent of saying "if a girl doesn't want to be assaulted, she shouldn't wear tight clothes." It removes any sense of personal responsibility from the assailants. That's pure bullsh!t right there, even for an enormous d0uchebag like yourself.

2. You basically just gave SCar fans permission to throw stuff because it's somehow "justified". Not only did you give your blessing, but you knew you were doing it when you said it.

Nov 21, 2019, 8:26 AM

make an announcement (during warmups, through school communication, newspaper, internet, etc.) that extra security will be on hand and if anyone is caught throwing objects they will be escorted out and banned from the premises for life. That will stop it really quick. And at that point they know there will be an actual consequence for their decisions.

Its really not that hard. But instead lets do it the carolina way and cow-tow to the drunks and dis-orderlies...you know the ones that make your fanbase the joke that it is throughout america. They were ranked #1 worse fanbase in the entire country. I'm assuming they're proud of that??

According to 24/7 Sports, Carolina leads the country (by a wide margin) in fan ejections -

Nov 21, 2019, 11:15 AM

It's not to be disrespectful to anybody, if it was we would do it from the endzone to midfield towards the other team and not the fans.

I understand why a school would make the opposing team warm up pregame in front of their student section (Clemson does this too). But you can't put us there and then act like this is a big deal because it's in front of your students

Dabo says that he has a lot of SC friends, I'm sure he has, he live and coaches in South Carolina. But I just don't think he has a lot of SC gamecock friends, they may be acquainted with each other, like the ones he takes pictures with that holds up the 5 bomb behind his back with that giant smile on their face. Being the HC of Clemson, I would almost bet those that he calls real good friends, aren't real good friends to him at heart!!! Sometimes, I think that Dabo is just to good to everybody, and those everybody's just isn't a Dabo at heart!!!

Being a special education teacher, I am really good at thinking of accommodations and modifications for those who need it. I suggest that the Carolina student section be instructed to close their eyes during our walk of Champions. When it’s over,Dabo can yell up to them to open their eyes. This way, the gamecock students won’t be triggered to throw things and act out.

You know what puts Gamecock fans in a "tough spot" --- their poor-performing team. If they won more, fans wouldn't care about incoming teams' traditions. They ought to be throwing stuff at Muschamp.
Also, let's be clear: if things were reversed - the Gamecocks would not hesitate to do something similar. I hope we pound them.
