Just tried Russell's Seafood grill tonight down the street and it was excellent. Always good to find another good option down here!

Hushpuppies at Lee's and Russell's are very similar and that is my first test for a seafood place. Russell is a Gamecock but his food is good.

Yes the puppies definitely passed the test out the gate. Most places down here seem to lean towards the chickens so that isnt surprising

Russell sold the restaurant a couple of years ago. The new owner is from Florence and I don’t know his allegiance.

years the best deal on the Strand was the all-you-can-eat crab legs at the Admiral Flagship. I haven't been in probably 10 years or so, but I think it was around $35 at that time. And you could sit there and eat forever and they just kept bringing out more.

Yes, I stole that from some movie, not sure which one.

The Admirals was on Murrell's Inlet. It is now a biker bar.

Admirals Flagship is now Judy Boone’s. Not a biker bar. Pretty much Prosser’s in a bigger building. Food is still good. Friday night is seafood night.

First time I ate at Lee's was 1954. Ate there last year and it's still great, but only reason is because we were looking at a place on Pawleys. Deserted MB for OIB when kids grew up so it's now Calabash, Seafood Hut to be exact.

cruising down Murrells Inlet row, it's not a place that jumps out at you. But we loved it... folks are waiting in line for over an hour at Drunken Jack's or some place like that, and we'd just slide into the Inlet Crab House and usually be seated immediately.

Anyone remember a place down here during the 80's "Something Back porch"? Want to say it was in an old white house with large wrap around porch. Strawberry Daiquiri was a specialty and they came in a glass with green writing.

Planter's Back Porch owned by the same people as Rice Planters in Myrtle beach. THeir baked potato was cooked in pine sap.

Thought the same thing but second time not as good. Russell is hit or miss. My go to is Crab Shack (or House) on second row closer to Dead Dog area. Gaudy blue yellow and pink building. Good food and lot of it

Planning on going to either Provision Company in Southport or Seafood Shack in Calabash Sunday then catch the Happy Together show at Myrtle Beach (a Turtle, an Association, an Archie, Gary Puckett, Little Anthony, The Cowsills & The Vogues). Then going back to Myrtle Tuesday to the Car Museum and Lee's Inlet Kitchen. Will report back.

I feel like more and more places are like that these days so I usually give those types of places a second chance if I wasn't that impressed the first time but they had potential.

It used to be fantastic but, over time, became a tourist trap and the quality of the food really declined (it became more about quantity than quality). I haven't been back in years. Sara J's a little further up the road in Garden City is MUCH BETTER IMO. I like Lee's Inlet Kitchen too.

which is just up the road in Garden City.
Chesapeake House, a little further up Kings Highway, is good too.
My personal favorite is Ella's up in Calabash which has been around since 1950, but was destroyed by a fire back in April. As I understand it, the owners intend to rebuild but it will be some time before they are back up and running.

Look, all of these places have a special place in our hearts....

if you're a native South Carolinian... you went to all these places back in the day on a beach trip. The memories and nostalgia are all good. But if you travel around the country, you'll find better seafood. JUST MY OPINION. Boston (or anywhere in New England), Seattle, Baltimore, San Fran, etc. In fact, I think the best fresh, local seafood I ever had was in Nova Scotia. There's a lot of great seafood out there. Travel. Experiment. Try something besides a fried seafood platter... I don't need a layer of cornbread on my seafood.
edit: I feel like I'm about to be labelled as a yankee commie pinko phag for this post...
