Tom Allen's unforgivable comments

When Tom Allen held his press conference last week and said( more or less) he needed different type players for his defense, I was stunned with disbelief. A pre-season ranked #4 team was lacking in talent and therefore he was absolved of any responsibility for the poor performances(?). If you are one of those players, your heart was just ripped out and the effects of those pathetic comments were in full view against Duke. Tom Allen needs to be gone by Sunday night. If not, a losing season will be our destiny accompanied by peripheral damage. Not what these players want or deserve.

Except for Safety RJ Mickens and LB Barrett Carter, with both the Safety and LB groups being worse because of the departure of those two, our defense has better personnel at DE and pretty much comparable talent at DT.

(Our CBs …at least the starters trio of Terrell, Hampton, and Lukas are the same.)

DE improved personnel quality doesn’t need elaboration.

DT personnel: We lost P.Page and T.Williams and got Amare Adams. Furthermore, Vic Burley has improved significantly from 2024.

Folks, it isn’t weaker personnel that is the cause of our much worse defensive performance.

Our defensive assistants are the same except for Ben Boulware as a significant addition.

By process of elimination, there is one major change in our defense. I wonder what that is? Or maybe who that is.

those amazing games powerhouse App State , stanford , UVA

and that amazing fourth quarter shutdown of SMU
Texas

oh and then the year before - that historic game vs Kentucky once Nate Wiggins and Makuba left

we've seen what this group of guys can do for years
some are blind some can see

these guys are not as aggressive and strong as SEC guys. they don't pass the eye test . if i was older, maybe i wouldn't see it

Well he didn't lie. The guys we have are not very good at all. Many of them were fall back options. We have to recruit/ buy better players.

Again, this time for you.

Aside from having another year of experience and one stud transfer addition at DE, our personnel is the essentially the same except for the loss of B.Carter and RJ Mickens.

It’s not a personnel problem that is plaguing our defense, guys.

Does that explain why our DLine is as fierce rushing the QB as a nursing home rushing to the buffet line?

We have talent but we also have a lot of just outright dumb defensive play calls or players thinking too much instead of just of playing.

I’m definitely not an defensive expert but I know the difference between not having talent and bad defensive schemes… I’ve been seeing the latter far more than the former

the guy is severely handcuffed…mostly by himself. He hasn’t been through but maybe one recruiting cycle to have the right talent for his system, and he wasn’t allowed to bring any assistants; that is not his fault. But I always had a problem with him coming in the door saying “I don’t recruit” and “I coach from the box”. These are both head scratching statements from a D1 coordinator to me.

I did not hear Tom Allen’s comments earlier in the week

After yesterday, I am NOT a Tom Allen fan.

After yesterday, it seems clear, the defensive players do not want to play for Tom Allen.

OP is 100% correct. We have a lot of the same players from last year on defense and they just leave people completely uncovered.

I have no basis to say this, but just guessing it seems like the defensive assistants don’t like Tom Allen or don’t like his scheme, and that dislike filters down to the players, leaving players and assistants completely uninterested in playing for Tom Allen.

Yesterday was pathetic. Our defense is much more talented than we saw yesterday.

I think it is both the scheme and the players.

Remember the defense was not good last year…we got cooked on the ground anytime we played a team with a pulse running the ball..the safety play outside of Mickens was bad the linebacker play was so so etc.

The original sin was thinking that this same group of players would just magically scale up and all of sudden be elite under Allen just because he looks like a tough guy compared to ole pork chop!

Now the defense has regressed and some of that is on Allen but I think it is both the players and the scheme not being elite!

The players aren't the problem, it's Allen's coaching. Look at Dukes last TD and 2 point conversion, both plays were uncontested.
Opposing teams have him figured out.
