It was dirty of Bates

Jan 4, 2022, 9:22 AM

To leave one month before signing day. Period.

Please explain? I’m sad he left but I hold
No hard feelings for the guy like many here. I don’t believe he has done anything wrong or dirty or whatever. The man is pursuing his career the way he thinks best for him and his family. He served Clemson well and his departure was as respectful as can be in my opinion. He holds no bad feelings as I’m sure Dabo holds no bad feelings. Do the ones blasting Venables and Bates not realize they are GREAT friends and probably talk every day and love and support each other in all they do?

This is Clemson. These guys are not cutthroat jerks.

Let's not turn a blind eye here...the "main" signing day has passed. The final signing day is in February, but there's slim pickings left. Bates stayed through the main recruiting period.

What would be dirty for Bates would be to stay here another month, knowing he was planning to leave, and recruit additional players.

If someone wants to leave a job its in the best interests for all parties involved to do so immediately so there isn't a conflict of interest. We all leave jobs at inconvenient times. Its part of life. Nothing dirty about leaving a job if you feel a better opportunity comes along. We all do it.

should have known we wouldn't have kept both Bates and Goodwin.odd man out.

Bates was recruiting coordinator. That makes it worse that he left before signing day in Feb. he could have finished his job.

Jan 4, 2022, 11:17 AM

By misleading recruits about his intentions and then leaving the school immediately after they sign?
We've already signed 80%+ of the class...the second signing day has very little action.

What about the ones he just signed? He left them. Your post is senseless.

Re: It was dirty of Bates

Jan 4, 2022, 12:12 PM

He/we "signed" MANY of those before he was allegedly "disgruntled" at not getting the DC title. The situation from early signing day to late signing day is very different. Sorry if that's so confusing that you deem it "senseless".

Oh I’m not confused at all. My generation believed if you start a job, finish it. No need for you to insult me, because you disagree with me, is it?

Re: It was dirty of Bates

Jan 4, 2022, 12:26 PM

How do you "finish" this job? It's never finished. In addition to closing out the 2022 class, we are already working on the 2023 class. Leaving after ESD makes complete sense for Bates, for Clemson, and for his new employer who needs their coaching staff to start working.

Re: It was dirty of Bates

Jan 4, 2022, 12:44 PM

You finish the job by completing the recruiting class, that you are the coordinator for. He could leave directly afterwards.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It was dirty of Bates

Jan 4, 2022, 12:45 PM

He's also the coordinator of the 2023 class, which is unfinished.

Get real. You are reaching now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It sounds like you would never think it's the appropriate

Jan 4, 2022, 12:37 PM [ in reply to Re: It was dirty of Bates ]

time for him to leave.

If he leaves after February's signing day, you would say that he recruited these young men and didn't stay to "finish the job" and coach them.

If he leaves in the spring, you would say that he didn't stay through summer workouts and for the fall season, thereby not "finishing the job."

Admit it, you think he should coach at Clemson until he retires, and anything short of that is not "finishing the job."

Wrong again. He was the recruiting coordinator, and left one month before the completion of the cycle.

Dirty? Ridiculous comment!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When was he supposed to leave ?

Jan 4, 2022, 12:11 PM

If you know you’re going just go. Your mind isn’t going to be 100% at the current job

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He is never supposed to leave.

Jan 4, 2022, 12:34 PM

No Clemson football coaches are ever supposed to leave. Clemson is perfect and no other situation could possibly compare, and if they leave they are a horrible person.

Has it occurred to you that he told Dabo he was leaving

Jan 4, 2022, 12:33 PM

prior to the early signing day, and waited until now to announce it out of courtesy to Dabo and the team?

Or have you already made up your mind that Bates is selfish, disloyal, and generally an evil person?

I don’t think that’s what happened. I think this is when

Jan 4, 2022, 12:39 PM

he got the opportunity (or reached out) and this is when he got it. We aren’t delaying these things, I don’t think. Why would we? To lock in a signing class? Even if we were a program to lie to recruits (and we are not), there’s no reason to do that now…they’ll just leave in a year if they aren’t happy.

My guess is what we see is what happened, nothing more.

There is a segment of folks here...

Jan 4, 2022, 7:04 PM

who will throw daggers at anyone who leaves Clemson. It's just how they are programmed.

Bates did nothing wrong at all. He waited until early signing (which is the most important day) passed and then left.

It is what it is. Dabo now has to deal with assistants leaving like everyone other program. The stability was nice while it lasted but a new era is upon us.
