You not kidding tug. Probably the last tough generation. We were pretty tough growing up but then we got soft.

Wonder what them guys and gals would thunk if they saw someone get butthurt over a sporting event... and moreso get whiney when someone doesn't like an anonymous poast on a sporting forum. 🤣

Great post!!!

Lift slab construction. Wikipedia actually references Johnstone and has a photo of A Annex, but facing the other direction (note those "decorative" concrete panels that covered the ledge are not in the photos). Scary thing is a building in CT (L'Ambiance Plaza) collapsed in the '80s during construction using this technique and 28 workers died. Luckily the guys on the Clemson project fared better, and those of us that lived in Johnstone also lived to tell about it.

I can only remember one fat boy from 1st grade to 12th grade in the schools I attended and it was the same boy. He came from a well to do family while the rest of us came from poor families or hard working blue collar families, many who worked in the textile mills in green ville County.

If the complex had the Johnstone Hall name when I was there in the mid 1960s, none of us knew it. To us it was "The Tin Cans," sections A, B, C, D, E, & F.

Daniel Construction Company erected the complex in late 1953 and 1954. Construction was completed in less than a year, and the dorms were ready for the 1954 fall semester. The cost was about $4 million.

The complex had 1,000 rooms with a dining hall, loggia, canteen, barber shop, etc. When it was built, it was the largest college dormitory in the US.

Do you or anyone know what those rods and looks like hydraulic hose are?. Attached around the I-beams. I worked construction for several years and never saw anything like it.

my understanding is they went up in a couple of weeks. they poured the slabs on the ground and used hoists to lift the floors into place. They were used in WW2 as temporary barracks/ offices, and before they were torn down, Johnstone was the last structure still standing of its's type..
