Future of Clemson D

DT- DJ Reader DT- Carlos Watkins DE- Shaq Lawson DE- ? LB- Ben Boulware LB- BJ Goodson LB- ? CB- MacKensie Alexander CB- Cordrea Tankersley S- Jayron Kearse S- Korrin Wiggins
Who do you see as other potential starters come 2015. And who fills in the questions. Two main ones I see would be Travis Blanks obviously once healthy and Scott Pagano.

I think Kevin Dodd at DE, and Chris Register at LB. Kevin is 3rd team this year behind Crawford and Barnes.
Also has Steward exhausted all his appeals for a medical hardship?
I also think TJ Green starts at one of the safties.

Yeah Kevin Dodd a possibility, haven't heard as much as expected about Ogundeko. Forgot about Register. Coaches seemed high on him throughout spring and summer. I bet the non clemson media will definitely criticize our D in offseason after losing all our big name players but we will still have a chance to be another top 25 unit. Wonder what Venables will do.

I think the D will be very good. It will be the deepest and most talented back seven we've had in some time. The starting front four will be very good and the depth up the middle will be good. I can see us not having as much depth at DE, but the starters will be very good.

Maybe but he's playing LB now. Coach V likes big LB who can run unlike our last coach who loved to play safties at LB and we could never stop a power running team.

I heard that Korie Rogers was very fast and athletic. I do think Register could play DE. O'Daniel will play Lb. Kellen Jones is a LB. We have plenty of depth. We lost a lot, but I think the staff has addressed the needs. Would love to get Huggins and possibly a surprise. We also have Dane Rogers at DE.

To compensate for the absence of Beasley's pass rushing ability, we'll probably use a Bandit position, like a OLB/DE hybrid type on the opposite side of Lawson. Ebo, Register and Yeargin will compete hard for this spot, and all 3 are excellent fits for that position (considering they were recruited by some schools as a DE and some as LB)

Lawson plays the weak side end now backing up Beasley. He is a very good paso rusher. The strong side end right now will be Dodd unless Huggins comes in and beats him out.

Also, Korie Rogers may make a push for that LB spot, as could O'Daniel or Burrell. It all depends if we have a nickel in the game or not.

You're right the strating LB's will be a tough call we have lots of talent at that position.

Poor guy has had tough luck with injuries but he transferred from Oklahoma when Venables came. From what I've read about him, he has quite a motor and is a very physical player.

Depth on the DL will be the biggest question

secondary will be loaded. LB has a ton of talent and bodies and will be fine. The starters on the DL should also be good, with 3 potential NFL players in Lawson, Reeder and Watkins. I too see Dodd at least starting the year at SDE. But behind them it's kind of thin experience wise. Inside Pagano obviously becomes a factor. I think we see Rod Byers moved back to DT, and we'll see how a year in S&C has molded Jabril Robinson. A freshman like Sterling Johnson could come in and play immediately and Gabe Cervenka as well. Behind Lawson, Ogundeko moves in to a role. Richard Yeargin III if he has added some wieght could be a factor, and freshmen like Austin Bryant could play. I think Ferrell and Davis will redshirt. Register could become a factor here. Behind Dodd, Dane Rogers or Martin Aiken should be first man up. We'll have talent, just a lot of it untested up front. I have no issues at LB or DB. We certainly won't be a dumpster fire like the coots

Next year we go back to winning games 57-44 and the other half of TNET loses it's collective minds.
I am more concerned about the traffic after the Notre Dame game , especially since it will be an 8:00 start and I wont get to hotel in Greenville till 2:30 am

On defense I’m thinking it’s going to be more of a reloading year next year than a rebuilding one.
Unlike on offense where we often fail to properly evaluate, develop and plan ahead with our recruiting, on defense we’ve been much smarter and recruited more consistently the last 3 or 4 cycles. As a result, we have talent stacked up, developed and waiting behind the players that are leaving.
I’m sure there will be some growing pains, but players like Lawson, Okendecko, Pagano, Watkins, Boulware, Register and O’Daniel are going to be household names next year.
Offense on the other hand.
Expect more of the same. An All American caliber QB surrounded by good skill players, but severely hampered by a horrible O-line.
Should Watson go down or miss any significant time we’ll have NO ONE behind him other than N. Schuesler and a couple very raw true freshmen.

Take a second look at our 2015 Class - future very bright

We have a ton of talented and very highly rated OL coming in, including three 4 Stars and one Five Star the last time I checked.
If we're able to keep everyone who's verbally committed we also have some incredible offensive weapons as well, including standouts Cain & McCloud. Even though Cain currently plays QB for his team in FL, he's one of the top WR in the nation. And McCloud is a beast at RB or possibly WR. He was one of the top talents at Dabo's camp and we're very fortunate he verbally committed to Clemson.
Our QB commits in Tucker & Israel are very talented as well, although not as highly touted as Watson.
The future looks very bright for Clemson football and the coaches are definitely filling in the needs of the team.

The incoming OL ease worries, however, likely three redshirted, and even if none redshirted, we can't have a bunch of true freshman missing assignments and allowing deshaun to take tons of hits. Not to mention after this year we lose Kalon Davis, David Beasley, and Reid Webster who is on the depth chart at 4 positions. Offensive line may get worse before it gets better. Hopefully great skill players can overcome it.

Very valid points you made but at the same time I do not believe we have ever recruited this many highly touted & talented OL in one class. I know the number of stars aren't indicative of a great college and even future OL, but with the injuries this year and the transfer of Anthony, we need all the help we can get there!
I was very excited when Crowder chose Clemson on signing day and also think Morris will see the lineup at some point next year. The injuries and Anthony leaving this year really hurt but I have a ton of respect for how they've handled the adversity. I'm also interested to see what will happen with Byers; will he stay on the OL or move back to his normal position on the DL.
On a side note, the one thing I hope Stoudt teaches Watson is how to slide when defenders are coming at him when he takes off. I cringe every time Watson takes a hit. He tried to outrun the Lousiville DB on the play he broke his finger. Can anyone pass that to Dabo??? Slide Watson, slide!

Highly doubt freshmen OL next year will have much of an impact other than as backups. As highly regarded as Crowder was, he is just now at mid season getting more snaps as a redshirt freshman.

Look around CFB and find how many true freshmen are starting on the O-line..It rarely happens. Even with 5 stars.
The Olinemen we sign this year likely won't start a game until 2016 at the earliest, and they won't be heavy contributors until 2017 as RS Sophomores when Watson will likely be gone. Those guys will be blocking for Israel or Bryant, not Watson..That's great for the longterm future, but we need linemen ready next year and we just don't have them.
Fact is, Watson committed to us three years ago as a sophomore in HS..Knowing this, we should've been recruiting O-linemen the last two years so they would be ready when he got here. Instead, we signed only two per class the last two years and only one of those (Crowder)was rated a consensus 4 star. The other three were three stars and one (Destefano)is no longer on the team.
Sure, we're doing a great job getting skill players on offense, but our O-line recruting just makes no sense..This year's class is great, but how much you want to bet we won't sign more than two O-linemen the next cycle?

I think with a lot of these kids getting good playing time will help us in the long run. Granted Pagano hasn't played is a great testament to our depth being ridiculous. So he will be a force next year he is a big boy to clog that middle. 6'4 300lbs.
