It is always a dangerous thing to generalize about any group, segment, demographic, and etc. My wife is from Michigan, and you would be hard pressed to find a ‘southerner’ that has a better appreciation - and love - for the upstate.
Of course now, the fact that she married me, is an indicator of her intelligence and impeccable character. That not only sets her apart and superior to most, but even better still, makes her the epitome of a great ‘citizen’. Regardless of her geographic origin.
Now, if she would just stop making me watch the Wolverines with her….

I used to love Myrtle Beach. Now I call it Dirty Myrtle or Ghetto Myrtle; depending on what mood I am in. Last time I was at the boardwalk, I literally thought I was going to have to shoot somebody.

I was born & raised in Anderson county but I consider North Myrtle Beach my second home because I went to Coastal Carolina first & our family had two homes there. I worked as a beach Lifeguard on South Myrtle Beach for 5-6 seasons and loved every minute of it.
It really upsets me when people refer to Myrtle Beach as Dirty Myrtle, I understand why but it really gives the whole state a black eye when it can be fixed and improved to be much like it used to be. We should take pride in our state and beaches and get involved politically there to make things better.
I live in Clemmons, NC and I love this area an the people but SC will always be home to me. Clemson will always be Gods country & I would hate it if people started referring to Clemson as Dirty Clemson. It just goes against the love I have for the Tigers & Clemson.

It annoys me that Myrtle has gone to crap as bad as it does you. South Myrtle is not a place I want to take my family. Pawleys is still nice as is Cherry Grove. North Myrtle is still ok, but not what it used to be either. South Myrtle is dirty, run down, and not safe.

Woulda responded sooner but I had to re-install word perfect on my Commodore 64 and it kept hanging up on floppy disk 4. I would guess that we’re close to the same age; you don’t have to be old to be erudite. I haven’t used a word on this site that I hadn’t learned by the time I graduated high school. You could help us out though since you’re so bad at making jokes; when you are trying to be funny could you use the word “snoogans” or if you want something more recent “bazinga ”. It sure would be a big help for us simple folk who are trying to decipher your code.

I was born and raised in SC. Left when I was in my 20's, travelled and worked coast to coast and many places in between. I worked and lived in many places that were rated "great" retirement locations and could have chosen any of them, but when I retired I came back here because of the Upstate life style.

In the past 24 months, Americans have defected from the north for the south by an order of magnitude trying to escape higher taxes, lesser infrastructure and similar wages at a lower cost of living. What has changed to lead us here? What’s wrong that everyone is racing out of northern states for the south?
Figuratively speaking, squeezing one end of the balloon to inflate the other isn’t the optimal path. Especially not when there is an egregious sense of entitlement by the majority making the south their new home.

So, you do know there was not a Mason-Dixon line when Thomas Green Clemson moved to SC in the 1800s and families like mine moved here in the 1700s?
I stand corrected. The Mason-Dixon line was established in 1767 so there was a Mason-Dixon line when Thomas Green Clemson moved to SC but not when my family decendants moved to SC around 1752.

folks living on the lake are from up north, having retired from Michigan or Ohio, mostly. All that I have met are nice folks.
However, about 40 years ago, I met a dairy farmer who had recently moved from upstate NY to Orangeburg county. Probably the most obnoxious yankee I have ever met! He thought everything in South Carolina was so backwards, that he actually named his farm Anilorac! Yep...Anilorac is Carolina spelled backwards!
He actually had the mindset that he moved here to show us dumb southerners how to farm! Needless to say, he failed at that!

It’s just as bad or worse in the Lowcountry. They tend to be blunt and many southerners don’t like that. I don’t mind them being blunt. What I despise is that so many have a condescending attitude towards all things southern. To quote Lewis Grizzard, “If you want to go back Delta is ready when you are.”
