Interesting retweet from Big Dave

1

Mar 9, 2023, 11:11 AM

I guess Big Dave isn’t a fan of Streeter at all. Completely blames him for DJs lack of development, which is understandable, but he’s not completely at fault here

Streeter was in over his head, yes. But, DJ has a lot more work to do if he wants to make it to the NFL. Honestly, DJ's play towards the end of the season made him look like he didn't want to be out there.

about them - but whatever) should feel that wherever DJ went - I truly don't know & don't care - will FLOURISH and BLOSSOM into the amazing QB his dad always knew he could be ? ? ? ? ?

Or will the narrative then switch to - DJ had so much to overcome from Streeter's complete lack of understanding of how to play QB, that he still is no good at all ?

Streeter had NOTHING to do with the guy taking a 3 step drop, looking directly to the left flat and overthrowing the wide open guy by 7 feet . . . . or bouncing it twice before it ever got to him. Over & over again.

If DJ is all that - he will get snapped up and be the next Marino the way you guys go on and on about how poorly he was served at Clemson.

We shall see.

I don't have any interest in bashing Streeter, because he's a Clemson guy through and through, but...

Neither DW or TL grew or developed as QBs under Street. In fact, as naturally talented and successful as they were when they arrived, a case can be made that they regressed in some ways under his coaching.

How would you make a case that Watson and Lawrence regressed during their time at Clemson? For Lawrence, his completion percentage, yards per attempt, and QB rating all improved each year he was at Clemson.

You could make a case that Watson's numbers went down each year he was at Clemson, but to me that's a case of how numbers don't always tell the full story. It's hard to watch him become a Heisman finalist in each of his final 2 seasons and play in back to back NC games and say that he was regressing. Now, he's a natural talent and it's hard for me to pat any of our coaches on the back for how awesome he was, but the overall point is that DJ had a lot more going on beyond the coaching he was receiving.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am not sure they improved due to BS's coaching. Both of

Plus, there definitely aren’t any examples of Streeter taking a non-5 star QB and making him much better.

It seemed that none of our backups improved much if at all. The list of those QBs is long.

You’d think he would at least have one guy who improved. But it’s crickets…

Mar 9, 2023, 6:18 PM [ in reply to Sounds like sour grapes to me. He also coached Watson and TL ]

This is stupid. Watson refused to work with Streeter and hired an outside passing coach. Trevor did work with Streeter, and his mechanics declined dramatically after doing so. The Jags new coach said they had to reteach him everything and since doing so, he's looked good in the NFL. Trevor had so much natural talent that he could have gone to any school and been a first round draft pick. You can't make a sow's ear out of a silk purse.

I don't know that I agree they were both more talented than DJ. DJ had better high school stats against far better competition and won more games. He outdueled Bryce Young, a Heisman winner. I think DJ was forced into a scheme that was horrible for him and our coaches refused to adapt. And I think Streeter simultaneously hurt his mechanics.

You are right that DJ was a bad System Fit, however, you are showing yourChicken Feathers when you state that Watson refused to work with Streeter -and- only worked with his “Personal QB Coach”. Listen, while you can certainly have your complaints about Streeter... he WAS the QB coach for Watson and Lawrence. And while you can level the accusation that they may not have improved as they went through the years... they also didn't fall off a cliff skill-wise either.

So at WORST the data suggests that Streeter isn't a day 1 draft NFL QB guru who takes guys to new heights they couldn't achieve before. And fair enough.

But DJ had games where he couldn't hit sand if he was on a camel, and you can't blame ALL of that on your QB coach.

DJ didn't seem to be in the right system, add to that the talent drop off at key positions and injuries etc... and it was just a bad fit. It didn't work out, which sometimes happens. No one really saw it coming, especially after some good games in '20. Dave should let it go and just hope things work out at Oregon State.

Re: Interesting retweet from Big Dave

Mar 9, 2023, 6:20 PM

As I said above, he was never Watson's QB coach. He was Clemson's QB coach, while Watson had an outside one. And Trevor didn't fall off a cliff, but he did get worse. But look at the QBs who have left us and then improved.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Interesting retweet from Big Dave

Mar 10, 2023, 1:20 PM

I don't see how you can take Watson working with another QB during the offseason and equate that to him refusing to work with Streeter or not being coached by Streeter. Coaches are only allowed to work with players for a limited amount of hours so Watson hiring someone on the outside could have easily been as simple as him wanting to continue working during times the coaches weren't allowed to do so.

Let's face it, Streeter became the scapegoat in a no-win situation. He had to babysit DJ, probably couldn't get CK more snaps because of the leash attached to his neck due to DJ's failing confidence, and as a result, got blamed for the lack of DJ's development AND the lack of CK's development.

I will say I think he has handled himself very well and taken it like a man. You know he has to be incredibly frustrated to have to endure all the blame and not be able to defend himself.

I love DJ and his family but everything cannot be put on Coach Streeter’s shoulders. There is plenty of blame to go around. It’s wrong for Big Dave to wish such a negative future for BS. That would be as bad as Clemson fans hoping DJ bomb’s at OS. Big Dave has Double Standards. I like DJ but some his poor play was due to DJ and no one else. WR’s dropped passes. DJ overthrew passes of missed his target. You can’t put that on Coach Streeter.

Coach Streeter I pray you will find success in the future.

You can put inaccuracy on the QB coach's shoulders. Especially when the inaccurate QB was considered extremely accurate before meeting that coach.

Re: Interesting retweet from Big Dave

Mar 10, 2023, 1:24 PM [ in reply to Re: Interesting retweet from Big Dave ]

Agreed. Playing QB is just as much about the mental aspect of the game as it is physical. DJ had all the physical tools, and we all saw him make great throws and play great whenever things were going right and he was feeling confident. He just seemed to shut down as soon as he made a mistake or things started to turn south. One of the things that made Watson so special was he could throw a pick and come out on the next series as if the pick never happened. Watson could throw 5 straight bad passes(not saying he ever did) but he never lost the confidence in himself that his next pass would be perfect. It always seemed like DJ was terrified of making another mistake.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DJ's problem was caving when expectations got too high.

Mar 9, 2023, 4:34 PM

I don't know of any QB coach that can fix that TBH. He will likely look great at Oregon State as there are ZERO national expectations with that program. If he starts getting Heisman talk though later season, look out below.
