A FEW THOUGHTS on the bowl selections....
Dec 9, 2013, 7:52 AM
|
|
At this point in time it doesn't matter whether Clemson or South Carolina fans think each or both deserve particular bowl games.
The system in place has Clemson going to the OB; the Gamecocks to the Capital One. Naturally, being a Clemson grad and fan, I'm excited over our selection and hope for a victory.
South Carolina fans should be excited over their selection, which was based on that same system. It's not like they're going to some crappy bowl, as many regard the Cap One at the top of the non-BCS bowls.
We can debate and argue from now to the bowls as to whether or not either deserves their respective bowls, but the arguing serves no purpose: the decisions have been made. Next year, a new system will be in place, and there'll be boatloads of outcries over it, I am sure.
The important thing for both fan bases now is to concentrate on their upcoming games, encourage and support their teams...and let sleeping dogs lie. As posted previously, I'm looking forward to the holidays and our game against the OSU, and I'll let the Gamecocks do the same.
And as for the NC...well...that's another topic! lol

the Cap One bowl is still an important game with two good teams...S.C. and Wisconsin.
We don't have to like it nor support it; but, my point was that the Gamecocks are still going to one of the better bowls.

...at least we all refer to it by its original name without the shameless sponsorship...ala THE ORANGE BOWL, in contrast to the Capital One Bowl this is ONLY known for its shameless sponsorship and Alec Baldwin.

Financial payout, selection order, and by general conference matchups (#2 SEC v. #2 B1G) it is the top Non-BCS Bowl.

I'm talking about specific match-ups and viewership.

As an example, the Peach-Fil-A Bowl is generally one of the best if not the best non-BCS Bowl games because of the match-ups and the number of people who watch.
Heck, last year the Peach-Fil-A bowl topped some of the BCS Bowl games in viewership.
That certainly won't be the case this year with Duke playing texas A & M.

Viewership for all bowls change from year to year based on team involved. The criteria I used are more constant. Yes, on occasion the Peach Bowl can have a "better" matchup (typically not based on rankings, but teams involved), but using all other criteria the Cap One Bowl is considered the top Non-BCS Bowl.
Stating that, however, the only bowls most tend to care about is the MNC game, the bowl their team is in, and the bowl their arch-rival is in.
