I am dumb founded that for all the Brownell Bros. chest beating - some of which is deserved - there's no analysis of last night's win from them.
Well, let's help them out a bit.
First off, we've shot >50% on 3-pointers over the last two games, and those are our highest output scoring games (85 points) for the year. Had we shot a "normal %" we would have been down in the high 70's just like against Winthrop and UAB (which seems our sweet spot).
Secondly and most importantly, no one's bringing up the fact that last night was out 3rd-lowest 3-pointers-attempted on the young season. We tried only 21 3-pointers last night, which is at the very edge of what I think is recommended for us. We had tried 15 against Boise and 19 against UAB, both mid-70's scoring games and wins.

LOL.... has it not occurred to those clowns that our highest 3-point-attempts game was also our lowest scoring game? Davidson, 31 3-pointers and only 68 points.
I asked the question way back then - and was castigated for it. But seriously: who was coaching our 4th game of the year and allowed this team to jerk up 31 3-pointers?
If you've listened to the play-by-play, and Jay Williams was great last night, you've heard every one of them question Shot Selection in our games.
Yes; you can't be better than 6-0. But shot selection is going to cost the Tigers at some point if the players (coaches?) don't start learning lessons.
Case in point: last night at 4:38 left and the lead down to 7, and again at 3:04 left and the lead at 6, Chase Hunter hits two key 3-pointers. Great; love that he hit them.
But those are two critical points late in an Away game against a good defensive opponent. And the best Clemson can do is let a kid who shot 36% from 3 last year while starting jerk up two three's?
They escaped the percentages last night. Play that game all year and it will catch up to them.

You do understand that Hunter Tyson only shot 40% last year right?
And while Chase has improved each year, his Year-on-Year improvement last year was about 1% -
and not the 10% that it would take him to get to 46% this year? You know this right?
You also understand that this is a comment on whether he makes the shot in general, right, because we're trying to protect a late lead,
- and so taking a 2- pointer instead of the 3-pointer raises his % chance of making points to 45-48%, right?
And so the whole point of running your offense and getting a 2-point shot is really without argument when the best you have is Chase Hunter taking a 3-pointer.....
You people shouldn't even call yourselves Basketball fans..... it's ridiculous.

At 4:38 if Im not mistaken PJ Hall wasnt even in the game (could be wrong, but pretty sure he was on the bench after his 4th foul). Additionally, the NBA league average for 3pt % is right at 36%. By those metrics having Hunter shoot isnt such a bad thing. Lastly, the type of shots who take are as much dictated by our offense as the opponents defense. Alabama plays fast and we sped up accordingly. Additionally, if your best rim player is out of the game your best option may be your senior guard. The other team has a stake in how the game is played to.

PJ Hall left at the 5:28 mark. Clemson ran multiple possessions without him. On the floor at 4:38 - Godfrey, Girard, Wiggins, Leyte, Hunter.
NBA metrics for 3-point FG% don't matter - NBA line is 23'9" while college is 20'9". That's 3 feet for heaven's sake!
On two consecutive possessions we ran a 3-man movement at the top of the key. The very previous possession was when Girard hit a 3-pointer to make the lead seven from only 4. Hunter's shot came with 8 on the shot clock as Godfrey had set a screen and was rolling.
Limited thinking - why?
1. They didn't have to take a 3-pointer. Why does everyone get locked in on this? They could have easily posted either Godfrey or Wiggins on the block to shoot a much higher percentage 2-pointer. Run the GD offense for someone other than a Guard - but Brownell will never do that...
2. Girard was also on the court, as noted. He was 38% last year while Hunter was 36% overall. Girard was 38.5% in ACC play, and 38.1% overall.
But let's be real: Hunter's actual relevant 3-point % from last year was that from against the ACC schedule. All the other non-conference teams on the schedule couldn't get us into the NCAA.
Last year, Hunter shot 26.7% from 3 against the ACC schedule. 26.7%, and we're trying to hold a lead in the last 4 minutes of a game against Top 25 competition.
Now do you understand why Brownell has a hard time closing out games?

I dont put anyone on ignore. Im an adult. Civil arguments about sports dont ruin my day. Secondly, I'll take the Senior guard shooting (and making) the 3 over a Sophomore Forward on the floor becuase the starter is in foul trouble. Secondly, todays basketball game is played from outside-in, like it or not. I dont always approve of the Steph Curry approach to modern basketball, but it is what it is. Alabama as a team embodies this philosophy. Lastly, Im not defending Brownell's record as a coach, my previous posts should have made that clear. This back and forth was started over an erroneous talent eval in regards to Baehre. Finally, I respect your insight, you clearly know the game of basketball. However, as I have been told on tigernet many times when I criticize Dabo, if I know so much why I am I not on the sidelines? The same goes for basketball. Brownell is flawed, but the two of us keyboard warriors are not experts, if we were we would be paid coaches, not tigernet posters.

Brownell ran a 3-man play at the top of the key. Almost a weave. It was "outside-outside". Brownell has a fetish over the 3-point shot, and I'd bet it was because he was chastised at Clemson early on, long and loudly, for being a boring Defensive Coach who had no 3-point shooters. Now, it's all he and his staff know.
Quite frankly, it's part of his emotional handicap: he does things to satisfy the peanut gallery, not things that are right or involve thinking. In other words, he plays to the crowd, as if that's what wins games. He's playing to the crowd when he's calling 3-point plays, or when he's sucking up in IPTAY meetings, and in the AD's office, and with boosters. This is why they love him so. He's the Pied Piper. He has mesmerized the Elites of Clemson. He's 14-years into the most mediocre career in modern ACC basketball, and all the Clemson AD can do is say, "One more year."
Whatever: Clemson "basketball fans" get exactly what they deserve now.
Godfrey - in limited reps, of course - is a 63.5% scorer from 2-point range. That's this year, last year, and/or in-conference. 63+%.
When you're playing to hold a lead, you get points the high-percentage way: typically drive the lane or dump it into the post. You can dump it in, send it out, and dump it in again. Or you can play high-low post. Back screen the block. Whatever: the combos are limitless.
But with 4-to-go, up 7, then I'm taking playing for two with a 63% shooter any day. A 36% shooter from 3-point range doesn't even enter my thinking except as desperation. And when Brownell coaches offense, too often it's simply desperation.
And again, that's why Brownell loses tight games. It ain't hard.
As to Baehre, LOL. You can have Honor, Dawes, and Hemenway all you want. If you're just trading minutes between those, you'd be an absolute fool to take the midgets and the stiff from Indiana. Good luck.

I much prefer him as commentating on games instead of in-studio on one of those Animal House shows. He's too smart to be down in the muck with the idiots they let scream on the Point vs. Point formats. I'm sure that pays better, and with less travel,
