Dude, google their schedule. ESPN clearly shows they beat (then) #1 Texas, and also (then) #17 Illinois! Combine that with crushing (preseason) natty favorite Penn State and mighty Washington who (was) a perennial CFP contender and it should be obvious. Plus, they’re in the same conference with Iowa, who is capable of accomplishing absolutely nothing and still getting ranked in the CFP polls. Freakin’ do a little research before you post!

Why should it matter? Ohio State is the defending Champion and they are undefeated so of course they should be #1.

They are dominating every game. It's a bit like us last decade, year in and year out we had doubters everywhere because of our schedule. We had to prove it in the playoffs. OSU is the same this year - they keep winning, but you don't really know how good they are yet. You also can't say they aren't worth the ranking. Time will tell...

Often that analysis by doubters was bullcrap though . . .

There were some instances in which the doubting was understandable, but very often, Clemson's doubters were sort of "generic ACC doubting," rather than a real analysis of our actual schedule. In other words, they would make a quick and easy reference to the fact that Clemson "plays in the ACC," with that being intended shorthand for "plays no one," but in reality we had wins over 9 or 10 win FSU and/or Notre Dame, or a 9 win Auburn or TxAm, and maybe a win over a few solid 8 or 9 win team in the ACC (maybe a Miami, or a Louisville, NC State or a Pitt), and then an ACC Coastal champ that had 8 to 10 wins.
Many of those years in that stretch, our schedule was far a better than the average lazy analyst gave it credit for. They just spouted "ACC schedule this," and "ACC schedule that," but often (not always) that was a weak, undercooked analysis.

Their #3 strength of record (by FPI) despite not having played many quality opponents is a testament to the way they win games - i.e. they beat the living #### out of everyone in their way. They're just about the only team that hasn't stumbled or looked pedestrian against inferior competition, and while I agree they still have something to prove against good competition, I can't think of any reason why they should be ranked anything other than #1. And this is coming from somebody who really really really can't stand OSU
