I'm confused...pulling a Clemson? (UPDATE X3)
Sep 28, 2014, 11:55 PM
|
|
2007: From #6 to 6-6 2008: Goes to unranked Vandy ranked #24 and loses 24-17. Goes to Florida ranked #24 and loses 56-6. 2009: Goes to unranked Tennessee ranked #21 and loses 31-13. 2010: Loses 31-28 to unranked Kentucky ranked #10. Loses in spectacular fashion to Auburn in the SEC title game. 2011: Loses at home to unranked Auburn 16-13 while ranked #10. 2012: Loses at #9 LSU (The same team we later beat) 23-21 while ranked #3. 2013: Loses at Unranked Tennessee 23-21 while ranked #11. 2014: Loses at home to unranked Missouri 21-20 while ranked #13. Goes to lowly Kentucky and blows a 14 point lead with 11 minutes to go against a team that can do nothing but run wildcat and loses 45-38. Has a 14 point lead at home with under 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter against unranked Tennessee and loses in overtime, 45-42. Gets steamrolled 35-17 by their rival in the season finale to finish their season 6-6 after starting at #9.
I think we need to rethink that phrase.

But they play in the SEC right? And aren't SEC teams as good as or better than the teams in the top 25 regardless of actual rank? Come on guys we have to think these things through

I'm not sure the LSU one deserves to be in there. Losing at night @ LSU is nothing to be ashamed of.
but other than that, spot on, spot on.

I recall that being the 330p CBS game when they lost to LSU, not a night game.

Dude. You obviously can't "pull a Clemson" while losing

|
to ANY team in the mighty SEC - even Kentucky or Vandy.
Why? Because ESPN says so - that's why!

Actually, there is a big difference

|

Your examples illustrate a typical overrated team, hyped up for no apparent reason, that gets exposed in grand fashion. The phrase "pulling a Clemson" was not originally derogatory. It was used to refer to our past tendency to play down to a lessor team, despite being superior. It means, "C'mon Clemson, you're better than that."

I'll actually give a real answer although that's not the point of this thread clearly. It's because USC has more games to make up for it. Sure they blow a game each year...but there are 2-3 other chances for them to make up for it. Clemson only has 1 or 2 big games each year so when they blow them it costs Clemson more...period.

and they blow those 2-3 chances as well Tn, Ark, Ky and Florida say hello
How many times have the coots been in the running for the East and blew it by getting beat by lower teams??
And it cost who the most?

The point of the thread is to show how stupid it is to give one team out of 128 this label, when you can literally go find examples of every team in the country doing it. Including South Carolina.
The difference is, we haven't lost to an inferior team in the past three seasons. South Carolina has. And their losses have hurt them considerably. How many years in a row have they beaten the eventual SEC East champ, only to get left out because they trip up on a bad team?
At least when we've lost, it's been to good teams.
