Some early thoughts on Notre Dame

Oct 30, 2022, 5:01 PM

In one of those almost rare perfect storms, Clemson’s previous opponent played its next opponent, and there are a few takeaways from that contest.

First off, the Irish took a page out of Clemson’s book and ran it right at the undersized Syracuse defensive line. Clemson ran it 60 times for 293 yards, or 4.9 yards per carry. The Irish rolled up 246 yards on 56 carries, or 4.3 yards per rush. The Irish turned it over twice, both on interceptions, but still ran 75 plays for an average of 4.8 yards per play. They gained a total of 362 yards on 75 plays. Clemson had 450 yards on 85 plays, despite the turnovers, and had 5.3 yards per play, or almost a yard more per play than the Irish.

Now, different schemes, different gameplans, I get it. But it is interesting to look and see the teams attacked Syracuse the same way from an offensive standpoint. Clemson was a little more efficient, and without the four turnovers, would have likely blown the doors off the Orange.

Now, let’s look at the Notre Dame offense. Quarterback Drew Pyne is more of a game manager than anything else. He has 29 carries for 107 yards and isn’t really a threat to break a long one. The Irish are really a three-headed monster at running back with Audric Estime (99-558), Logan Diggs (95-431) and Chris Tyree (78-332). They lean on that big offensive line and don’t do a lot of motion and trickery…they just line up and come right at you.
Through the air, it’s all about tight end Michael Mayer, who has 47 receptions for 580 yards. The Irish have 1571 yards through the air, and 1/3 of those yards are his. After his 47 catches, the rest of the team has just 83, with 24 going to Lorenzo Styles. After Styles, not much production, so Pyne looks Mayer’s way almost all of the time. I can imagine that the Tigers will stick Barrett Carter and Andrew Mukuba/Malcolm Greene on Mayer and try and bracket the big guy.

Now, Clemson’s offense versus the Notre Dame defense. The Irish are a solid group, and ranked 28th nationally in total defense (Clemson is 27th). Whereas Clemson is 7th in rushing defense, the Irish are 50th. Notre Dame is 36th against the pass. Linebacker JB Bertrand (48 tackles) and big defensive lineman Isaiah Foskey (7 sacks) are two to watch. Foskey will line up against Jordan McFadden most of the time

Again, a good matchup all around for the Tigers. But on the road, against a good defense and an offense that wants to play keep-away, they can’t turn it over four times and expect to win. It would be nice to see DJ Uiagalelei get the receivers more involved in the offense – Tiger receivers have 11 catches over the last two games, and all of those are by Antonio Williams (7), and Joseph Ngata (4). Beaux Collins and the rest have been shut out.

I’ll tell you this – watching Tennessee’s offense is fun. They go with tempo and they don’t really care how you line up. On 3rd-and-2 they came out in what looked like a running set (where we see the QB run or RB run into the A or B gap), but checked out of that and threw a 20-yard hook. It was beautiful. And they throw the ball down the field and spread the field. I remember when Clemson did things like that, and would love to see that kind of game at Notre Dame.

We can beat these dudes. Biggest question is - is DJ his own worst enemy and can he play without the yips.

This is the kind of offense Venables would eat for lunch…..

Largely one dimensional with a game manager at QB….

It’ll be telling to see how Goodwin fares…

Oct 31, 2022, 8:51 PM [ in reply to That's a dang good analysis! ]

Lets just hope with this open date, that our fans aren't the only ones that has notice receivers running free, and they will give DJ a crash course at taking a quick glimpse of his receivers that a particular play wasn't designed to go to bc, he looks down the receiver where the ball was designed to go to. If they can get DJ to look at his options, I feel that he will see TDs that can be made all over the field, and that alone will shock opposing defensive coaches bc, they tell the defensive backs to just watch for where DJ is looking, and go cover that player bc that's where the ball is going, and they do bank on it!!!

Do you REALLY think our coaches have suddenly noticed that we have had open WRs? Surely our coaches watch our game film after every game- every week. I doubt our coaches wait until a bye week to look at game film.

I agree about Tennessee’s offense.

Oct 30, 2022, 5:08 PM

Ours used to be exciting like that, and I miss it.

I’ve never heard a good explanation for why we went away from the up tempo, eye candy approach on offense. It’s so bland now.

Oct 30, 2022, 5:28 PM

Streeter talked about up tempo in August. We haven’t seen very much of it. When they do it we actually move the ball well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We run when/if we need to.

Oct 30, 2022, 5:42 PM

If all a team had to do is go up-tempo, then why isn't everyone doing it? The reason is, scoring fights aren't always the best approach. There's a reason football is played at a methodical pace. Take time, score. Rinse and repeat. It's a very sound and proven method to winning games, and we've been pretty good at it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Tajh Boyd would have taken these past weeks getting in shape, Tajh could take us through the of the season undefeated. Those of us that remember well every down of FB that Tajh Boyd lined up behind center for our Tigers, we all known that Tajh never had the type of talent we have on our O L now. If he had, he would have QB records at Clemson that probably would've never been broken!!! Tajh was a much more talented QB than he ever got credit of having!!!

Re: I agree about Tennessee’s offense.

Oct 30, 2022, 7:13 PM [ in reply to I agree about Tennessee’s offense. ]

Yes. It was Chad Morris that put Clemson on the map with his offensive scheme. T Boyd still has many records in the ACC operating Morris scheme. We have slowly moved away from that while Tenn has moved toward that scheme. Who has the best offense? We used Morris scheme to finish most games off in the first half. The fans were much more into it and the opposition defense was on its heels. I believe this has made recruiting receivers more difficult. Higgins was from Knoxville and he would have went to Tenn if they had then the present offensive scheme. Would like to see us move back toward that scheme. We can do that with Chad but not DJ.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Morris was long gone when we signed Higgins, and no

Oct 31, 2022, 9:50 AM

We were NOT running his offense. That offense was cute, but it was soft. There's a reason Chad is no longer in the college game and his mentor, Gus Malzhan, is at UCF and they've not been doing as well. That, and Tennessee's offensive scheme is NOTHING like Malzhan's.

But hey, Gus and Chad are out there for the coots. When the cheerleader fails you go after them. Maybe both?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He didn’t say we were.

Oct 31, 2022, 10:15 AM

Read it again and you’ll see his point was that he thinks Higgins would have gone to TENN if THEY were running their current offense.

Don’t act like Morris’ offense wasn’t productive and effective at Clemson, it was. I hope you have a great day.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was a nice, gimmicky offense.

Oct 31, 2022, 10:28 AM

that helped bring in some skill guys, but there are reasons why Chad's out of the game and Gus is on his way out. This tells the story as well as the fact we've reached the highest level in program history after he was gone. I perhaps missed the Higgins thing, but you apparently missed the overall point.

It's all good. Take care and have a good day as well.

Oct 31, 2022, 9:46 AM

Poor Mrs Brownell. Swings and misses with every football troll. It's almost like she's trying to project her husband's basketball failures on to the football team. Every single feigned football critique can be circled right back to basketball but to a much larger extent. It's almost like she's making jokes at basketball's expense, but the truth is she doesn't realize she's doing it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I agree about Tennessee’s offense.

Oct 30, 2022, 9:46 PM

We’re averaging 72.7 plays per game this season according to Sports Reference. We averaged 71.7 in 2018 when we last won the national championship. But I can understand wanting to bring back Chad Morris so we can not win championships.

Re: I agree about Tennessee’s offense.

Oct 30, 2022, 9:48 PM [ in reply to Re: I agree about Tennessee’s offense. ]

Up tempo killed us in games also.. sometimes you need to work clock and give your defense rest while marching down the field. Teams that run the ball like we’ve done towards end of last year and last few games this year get good Oline and running backs. When we were getting all the receivers we heard about the top backs we couldn’t pull and the 3 star olinemen we were fielding, now we have a top running back and oline on the rise and we complain about receivers. Pick which offense you want and be happy with the recruits it attracts, can’t have everything.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Awful move?? We won more games, appeared in more playoffs, won more

Oct 31, 2022, 10:02 AM [ in reply to Re: I agree about Tennessee’s offense. ]

playoff games, appeared in more national championships, and won more national championships than anyone not named Alabama - ALL after Chad was no longer coordinating the offense and out failing on his own. He is since completely out of the college game, because his offenses don't sustain the team and win consistently when facing strong opponents.

Saying it's been an "awful move" since then has GOT to be a joke?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Some early thoughts on Notre Dame

Oct 30, 2022, 5:11 PM

Thanks for the summary. Tempo is something we don't have on offense. Wish it would change too. I watched Kansas St. play as well as Tenn. You won't fall asleep watching those 2 offenses.

Re: Some early thoughts on Notre Dame

Oct 30, 2022, 5:15 PM

Good work, David. One other thing that contributed to the late blow-out was the injury (got hit in the head by a flying arm) to Shraeder that went unnoticed. He was visibly shaken, and his next several passes were weak (came up short for no apparent reason) and off line.

As you said, our defensive key to victory over the Irish is STOP THE RUN. Our offensive key is to make our passing game go. Trouble is, we've gotta do both!

Go Tigers!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

KJ et al broke Shrader. He was a much different QB in the ND game last week

Oct 31, 2022, 8:15 PM

Than he was against us. He was noticeably limping in the end of our game vs SYR and you’ll also recall he didn’t do ANY scrambling towards the end of the game vs the beginning.
In the ND game he was still noticeably limping and never scrambled. A big part of the SYR offense is/was his running ability. No QB scramble = big problem for SYR

Excellent David and dead on. Our offense is definitely dull and boring. Not much in the way of shifting and eye candy. Penn States offense actually looks more creative than ours. UNCs looks great. We spend way too much time looking at the sideline. Way too much read option where we give it up the middle.

Oct 31, 2022, 12:01 AM

We're running more plays per game right now then we did in our most successful season ever - 2018.

If you don't see any presnap motion in every game we play, then you're hardly watching.

Here's what I know.. the offense is undefeated. There are verifiable and valid reasons it doesn't look as "exciting" to the average fan, the main thing missing to the layman are the long pass plays where we had a couple dudes named Trevor and Deshaun dropping dimes all over the field and then there was some dude named Travis who averaged over 7 yards a carry for his career and could take one to the house on any given play.

Look, I get it, we don't look as exciting to the average fan, but in reality we're running a methodical offense and lots of plays. Ultimately we're doing the most important thing in any sport - winning, with much thanks to the offense.

Sucks when a portion of a fanbase doesn't appreciate simple winning anymore, simply because it ain't flashy enough.

Think back to 2020 when DJ was wearing out the ND defense passing and what changed? In the 4th QTR and OT, the blitz and pressure by ND defense. They got to him a few times for QB pressures and a couple sacks.

Oct 30, 2022, 7:14 PM

It’s time to line up and play big boy football and who better to witness that than the Irish. I think that this is a game where the receivers come ready to play from the beginning. You can be sure that mr. Shipley will get a lot of attention when the Tigers have the ball. It is impossible to even imagine how the Tigers will attack in a game like this because so much relies on the QB. He may be great or he may be less than average. Dabo will have a plan and I expect that, after this game, we will have a good idea of the skills of the QB coach. A lot riding on this game. A whole lot!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So if DJ goes out there and

Oct 31, 2022, 9:54 AM

No.

A coach can only do so much for a player's mental standpoint, and DJ already has staff psychologist. If he gets the snakes in his head again, it speaks absolutely nothing about the QB coach.

Oct 30, 2022, 7:47 PM

I think it is under appreciated that Cuse went "All In" to beat us and lost a lot of their defenders in the process. They played us tough and give them credit. I think the time that team probably had to spend in the training room after the loss to us and the mental let down of losing that one to us when they were +3 in the TO margin was too much to get ready for the game against ND. We took their best shot and they were limping into the ND game.

Throw in there they lost their starting QB and best CB during the game.... ND walked away with it.

The extra time we have to prepare for ND will go well.... I don't see this being a close game.

Go Tigers !!!

cannot afford to let us waste so many first and second downs being predictable and inefficient, forcing us into drive-killing third and longish (or more than medium). You're right, ND will want to play keep away. We can't afford to be constantly chasing downs in every series (zone read for 2 yards, zone read for 1, 3rd and 6, etc).

I also remember that FSU got 6.1 yards per rush against us. ND will have seen that film and likely try to replicate it. They may be the one team left on our schedule that could be very effective in that way.
