Instead of Westmoreland, would we have still lost to the VC?

Absolutely.....left his forces after the attack on Pearl Harbor which resulted in one of the worst "death marches" (Bataan) in history....which my late father was part of....He was all bravado and no action....High tailed it and ran and for that Vietnam would have been a worse mess with his so-called leadership.

There is significant debate about how great a General he actually was including whether it was really necessary to go back to the Philippines or bypass it.
Sorry to hear your dad was on the Death March. I remember several years ago when a Clemson alumni and Death March survivor was recognized at a football game.
Amazing really any of them survived.

My father was my hero..although I lost him over 60 years ago..I still have people remind me of what a pillar of the community he was...which he was part of "The Greatest Generation"....Please read the book..It was written by Tom Brokaw and you will not put it down....

Sir, I suggest you check the record. Gen. MacArthur was ordered by President Roosevelt to leave and go to Australia to begin the road back.

If he had Dabo advising him, that would be a definite yes.

of his hubris. He was more of a prima donna than Patton w/ a tenth of the leadership.
We lost in Vietnam because it was rigged and our political leadership didn’t want to win. It just helped grow the debt and the deficit and paid off the military industrial complex.
Winning in Vietnam involved taking ARVN corruption seriously, focusing on counterinsurgency instead of attrition, and providing an obviously better alternative than NV communism. Like we did in Europe.

Good points. Vietnam was a complicated situation. Loved Patton although he was not perfect either.

You are correct, his hubris formulated the Inchon landing that was one of the most daring amphioxus assaults of all time. The NKA was completely surprised and had to withdraw. This operation saved the South Korean Peninsular. There would be no South Korea today without MacArthur. I strongly suggest you brush up on your history before you make such false and brash statements.

but got a lot of men killed trying to increase his prestige close the Yalu. He ignored a million warnings that the Chinese were coming. Made our guys way overextended w/ no strategic justification. It’s one of the biggest failures in American military history.
He deserves tons of credit for Inchon. But he was mediocre in WW2 and an absolute ####### for Chosin. I can explain exactly why with citations if you need.

He had some success in Korea but apparently got overconfident and invited the Chinese to attack, leading to the U.S> being pushed back beyond the 38th parallel. Many critics believe his Inchon raid was only a success because it was so poorly planned.
When Matthew Ridgway replaced MacArthur the UN forces rallied and drove the Chinese/Korea troops back to where the demarcation line is today.
Perhaps Ridgway should have been in charge in Vietnam.

Probably, but we likely would have lost 10 times as many men.

THIS!!!!!!!
My wife had an Uncle who was a tank driver under Patton's command. He died in April 1945, but he loved Gen. Patton. His men would walk through He ll for him, and believed they would come out on the winning side!

MacArthur graduated #1 in his class at West Point in the very early 1900's both academically, athletically and in Warfare Sciences over U.S. Grant, Jr. and others. Patton was dyslexic and needed an extra year to graduate from West Point but was exceptional with horses (calvalry), athletics, and organization.
Patton believed MacArthur was the only General as brave or braver than him. MacArthur was often on the European front lines in WWI where he crossed paths with Patton on more than one occasion.
Both families were wealthy, Patton's family was exceedingly so.

I'll remind everyone that Westmoreland was a South Carolinian. Gen. Abrams bought me a beer.
