Then every fourth year they are in the Coastal.
It's a complex algorithm that relies heavily on the phases of the moon in February of years ending in odd numbers. Also in months ending in "er" they have to wear the reverse "CCA" patch on their home jerseys.
Every fifth year they play Alabama for the SEC title.

This year is the year ND gets the automatic entry to the National Championship Playoff. They get to skip the ACC Championship and get an extra week's rest. The do have to play one of the two SEC teams in the four team playoff.
This year is the year for:
ND
SEC 1
SEC 2
Big 12 - since they were left out last year.
