I was just hoping for that SEC Recruiting bump

Feb 5, 2019, 8:57 AM

You know how they all sign JCollege kids that they know are headed elsewhere ,just to look good on NSD ?

On the Ole MI$$ boards, it seem Ole MI$$ might have provided him with the option to play CF and MLB ???? How the heck can that be done ? I know he even mentioned that in one of his interview. Online Classes I guess.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That can't be done simultaneously

Feb 5, 2019, 9:08 AM

Not sure where you read that, but it is not allowed by the NCAA to play CFB and a different professional sport at the same time. The MLB team that drafts him would also not allow that due to risk of injury.

Ealy will get drafted in the 1st round in June, be enticed with a heavy signing bonus since he has the leverage of playing CFB instead (I'm talking >$4M!), and never play a down of CFB. He also has the Kyler Murray evidence in his pocket to negotiate his baseball contract.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Snowflake Basher........Out

Small chance he could play minors and CFB

Feb 5, 2019, 9:16 AM

But that is still a huge risk for the MLB franchise and a MAJOR distraction for the CFB team. If we don't land him, then we might have dodged a significant distraction.

I still have a small amount of hope that he will sign with Clemson and only play CFB. But I would put my money on MLB and never play CFB.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Snowflake Basher........Out

That is incorrect. You can play a professional sport and

Feb 5, 2019, 9:38 AM [ in reply to That can't be done simultaneously ]

maintain elgibility/play another in college. The NCAA totally allows it....... they have forever. The pro's these days don't want you too but some relent(depending on the talent/round/need).... the contract/signing bonuses are discounted accordingly and I'm sure would contain language regarding injury in the other sport(although that's insurable)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

and the bottomline is I imagine Clemson would allow it

Feb 5, 2019, 9:47 AM

like most others for a really talented prospect. The kid would have to negotiate something with the baseball team that allowed him to maintain his football eligibility from a class hours standpoint and work with the football team so that he's available in the fall for football.

I doubt Ole Miss is offering any opportunity different than Clemson in this regard. Both would prefer he stick to football or play both in college but they aren't going to stop recruiting him if he rules those out and wants to figure out a way to do pro baseball/college football.

The easiest way to do both would be to play 1 year of college football and then report to spring training and go from there. However if you do that vs. going pro baseball only, your college eligibility clock starts and you can't pull a Weinke and enter college football at like 22 if baseball doesn't work ou

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: and the bottomline is I imagine Clemson would allow it

Feb 5, 2019, 9:53 AM

I can assure you that both schools want him to play both.

Maybe the football coaches are selfish but they aren't going to keep a first round prospect away from their baseball programs.

It wasn't for R Crosby. Seems like KC Royals paid his tuition.

Re: I was just hoping for that SEC Recruiting bump

He cant play professional baseball and college football at the same time. 1. No MLB team would allow that and 2. There would be no way he takes the required course load to stay academically eligible.

Just stating what I read that he said

Feb 5, 2019, 9:25 AM

I have no idea whether they'd let him pull it off or not. I would say, that if it can can done under NCAA rules,I doubt it'd ever be done under Dabo Rules.

Not trying to start an argument, but I thought Russell Wilson played baseball at Ashville and wanted to return to NCSt and coach would not let him, therefore the transfer to Wisc. Just asking. Also Roscoe Crosby.

From the baseball side of things, Russell Wilson was not highly regarded.

His baseball franchise likely wasn't worried about him getting hurt playing football.

Wilson didn't even start in his last season at NC State. I played against him and he pinch hit late in the game.

Ealy is on a much different level in baseball.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No- Russell Wilson decided he wanted to stick around and

play another year of football but NCSU had planned on him leaving(they thought he be moving to baseball only at that point) and had basically given the reigns to Mike Glennon in the Spring which caused Wilson to go to Wisconsin as a grad transfer.

Off the top of my head Drew Henson and Russel Wilson played in the minors over the summer while playing CFB. Clemson had Roscoe Crosby technically do both.

I do have my doubts that teams will draft him in the 1st and let him play RB.

Re: Movement back to Ole Mi$$ for Ealy

Feb 5, 2019, 9:45 AM

I am not sure how they can do that because the SEC does not allow a player to sign a professional contract for baseball and enroll to play college football. The NCAA has no issue as one does not affect your amateur status but the SEC has a rule in place to prevent hence one of the main factors for J Winston going to FSU. Maybe the SEC just recently changed the rule but have seen nothing on it.

Winston IIRC played MLB in the spring and summer and then played football in the fall at FSU

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Movement back to Ole Mi$$ for Ealy

Feb 5, 2019, 9:48 AM

Winston played for FSU's baseball team.

He did not sign a baseball contract prior to enrolling at FSU.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the poster's point was that he could have....

Feb 5, 2019, 9:56 AM

at the point of him committing/signing with FSU, it would have been prior to the MLB draft. I don't know that that weighted in to his college decision, just saying the timing could have dictated that if the SEC did have that rule in place. I wasn't aware that the SEC had any rules more stringent that the NCAA's(LOL)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think the poster's point was that he could have....

Feb 5, 2019, 9:59 AM

His last sentence says if he remembers correctly that Winston played MLB during spring and sumer and FSU football in the fall.

I was just adding that Winston played baseball for FSU and never signed an MLB contract.

If the SEC has a rule more strict than required by the NCAA you can guarantee that it would be to protect their football programs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think the poster's point was that he could have....

Feb 5, 2019, 10:11 AM [ in reply to I think the poster's point was that he could have.... ]

Winston's family except for the father who was pushing MLB(money) wanted him at UA. His father and him both were using the MLB contract issue within the SEC as their main reason to go to FSU. To be honest I do not think Winston ever wanted to go to UA and do not think he would have lasted under Saban with his off the field issues. His father was looking for the big MLB contract and after Winston did not sign with the Rangers his dad was not very happy.

Re: Movement back to Ole Mi$$ for Ealy

Feb 5, 2019, 10:05 AM [ in reply to Re: Movement back to Ole Mi$$ for Ealy ]

Your right but he was drafted out of HS and the Rangers made an offer to sign him and he chose not to. But the SEC will not give the player the option to sign the contract for baseball and still play football. The Big 12 does hence Murray and Winston could have because the ACC allows it as well. I think the SEC is the only conference that will not allow it.

So I am not sure why the love for Ole Miss if he plans on playing MLB. Unless it is an image thing for their program to show they can keep the top kids instate.

Murray ran into the problem coming out of HS as well. He decided to play both sports at aTm and opted out of the draft where he was projected to go 1st rd. He transferred the next year to OU. I think the kid Hampton going to LSU out of TN is looking at the same situation. Especially once you opt out of the draft you have to wait 4 years to get back in.

It looks like many of the recent crystal ball predictions have been coming from people who live in MS, so their prediction could be wishful thinking on their part. I agree that he probably won't ever see the football field due to the money he'll get from MLB.

Sounds like a Bo Jackson

Feb 5, 2019, 11:06 AM

He might try and do it all in college and play both professionally even though he would be better off just being a MLB pro and make more than being a RB

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Sounds like a Bo Jackson

Feb 5, 2019, 11:19 AM

I'm not sure what the percentage of 1 round pick outfielders who spend considerable time in the MLB would be.

I'm also not sure of the percentage of 5 star RBs who make the NFL.

If I had to bet, I would guess the percentages are fairly close though.

Signing in baseball is no guarantee of making MLB. Lots of top rated guys can't hit well enough and don't make it.

If he were to get drafted highly in football then he has already made it.

I believe that's why Murray is weighing his options and probably why this kid is even entertaining college football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bo and Deion would both tell him to forget about football

Re: Bo and Deion would both tell him to forget about football

Feb 5, 2019, 11:32 AM

It's hard to take this advice from either of these two.

Bo hates football because of his injury.

Deion just sent his son to scar and so decision making may not be his thing.

Also I have heard from multiple baseball people that Kyler Murray was a reach for the Athletics as a baseball pick. They question whether he will ever see the big leagues.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who would know better than the only two athletes to do it?

Feb 5, 2019, 11:37 AM

Baseball is just a better choice, especially if your position in football is RB. Longer career, more money, far less wear and tear on your body.

In the interview I read, Bo seemed more concerned with CTE and head injuries than his hip injury.

Whether Murray makes the big leagues or not, he's a multi-millionaire already if he sticks with baseball. He'd have to go in the first round to be guaranteed as much money from football as he's already gotten from the A's.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Who would know better than the only two athletes to do it?

Feb 5, 2019, 11:42 AM

Both of them were generational athletes who easily made it to the top of both sports.

Baseball is better once you get to the top.

Minor league baseball players make very little money.

There are also tons of prospects who never get to the top.

Yes a guaranteed major league baseball career would be a much better choice for Murray and Ealy, but there is a lot more risk involved at this point for Murray in baseball vs being a 1st round pick in football.

Ealy likely has similar risk of not making it to the highest league in both. More injury concern in football should probably push him toward baseball.

I don't think Murray will get picked in the 1st round but I'm speaking hypothetically.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Who would know better than the only two athletes to do it?

Feb 5, 2019, 11:44 AM [ in reply to Who would know better than the only two athletes to do it? ]

I have seen some athletes also say the opposite if you are drafted high enough in the NFL of course and you are a QB who is protected. It can take a relatively long time in the minors to make MLB. It can take a really long time to get that big contract in MLB. Also, they are on the road a bunch. In the NFL they are almost always home. It's just harder on the body. I agree though, I were a RB I would be going straight to MLB.

Re: Movement back to Ole Mi$$ for Ealy

Feb 5, 2019, 11:45 AM

Not worried about it either way — the young man can play and wish him the best whatever he decides. Clemson and Ealy are in good shape. Dabo and T.E. have reached out, now I’ll just watch it play out.
