I think you have to say a few extra Rosaries, though . . .

Nov 4, 2022, 3:55 PM

Sola Fide, and go Tigers.

Sola fide… Where is that in the Bible? (Assuming you’re also a sola scriptura guy)

The Bible doesn't say you can't drink...the Lord turned water
into wine. The bible say's you shouldn't get drunk..but it doesn't
say if you do that you will go to hell. Believe me, Catholics as well
as other denominations drink.

Jews don’t recognize Jesus. Protestants don’t recognize the Pope. Baptists don’t recognize one another in the liquor store.

Where ya know,

where is the Trinity in the Bible? Or hypostatic union? Well, ya have to do some theology, right?

Well, in a nutshell, from the Reformed perspective I'd argue that "theopneustos," from 2 Tim 3 indicates that the Scriptures are from Yahweh himself, imbues it w/ obvious natural authority. This much I don't expect Catholics to disagree with, but then, I'd further argue that until or unless you cite anything else as the mediating or interpretive authority layered over that, then you have no affirmative case for any such additional "institutional" authority. With that statement, I may have lost **some** Catholics, but I bet many are still with me, but would then just argue that said case for additional interpretive authority **has** been adequately made. I would disagree with them (which is a related but distinct argument) that that has been sufficiently made.

In other words, the Reformed argument is not, and has never been, that the words "sola scriptura" or some rhetorical equivalent are found in scripture, any more than various other theological articulations such as Trinity or hypostatic union are found in there. But it doesn't need to be. The Reformers believed in "good and necessary consequence thereof" (Westminster Confession). Catholics implicitly understand this as the Scriptures don't articulate Papal/Magesterial infallibility, nor Papal succession in the types of terms they would articulate them in, either, and yet they see them as consistent with Matthew 16. 2 Tim 3 does, of course locate the authority ultimately in God's revelation, and then the debate becomes whether or not Catholic Magesterial authority constitutes "theopneustos" in some way.

That's hilarious. Who are they kidding with this dry campus nonsense. Every Catholic buddy I know (painting broad brushstrokes but it is true for me) highly enjoys an adult beverage (as do I).

The private school I attended was dry at the time as well.

Nov 4, 2022, 5:27 PM

Unfortunately for the school, that was not how we rolled. I think they just want that rule out there publicly, but my guess is that it’s loosely enforced.

A Catholic dry campus is like a drug-free Grateful Dead concert.

Go cups

Nov 4, 2022, 5:33 PM

Every true southerner knows how to hide alcohol. Get you a pack of non-clear Solo cups. You will be fine.

I’ve been hammered at many a ND tailgate

Nov 4, 2022, 6:09 PM

I live up here and go to few games a year and my step daughters went there as well. To be honest had no idea it was a dry campus. Open container is strictly NOT-enforced. Then again, I rarely wear orange on campus. But the cops there are usually hospitable. YMMV

I partied with an Illinois Senator in ‘79, and believe me alcohol was flowing freely where we were parked. Best away game I have ever attended.

Should have said it was Percy. Great time with him. Wasn’t living here at the time, invited to join them after the game.

My good man, surely you know the Irish history. Fear not, adult beverages will abound.
