SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

Aug 5, 2014, 12:13 AM

Due mainly to the SEC network.
It's time to move on to the SEC. That's too big of a gap in $ to keep up.

That is absolutely not true.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't think folks are so much against moving to the SEC...

as they realize that SC would never (I know…never say never) let it happen. Same thing with UF and FSU.

The $EC doesn't want us you dolt b/c it adds no $$

Aug 5, 2014, 8:53 AM [ in reply to Re: but you can't buy intelligence! What you don't know is that ]

They are concerned about one thing: MONEY. Adding a school in an area already covered by the $EC does nothing for them. That's fine with me anyway, I prefer not being in the $EC.

Not that I care to be in the SEC but there is a flaw in that logic.

So true. Ole Miss and Miss St are also both in the SEC, but they both joined in a different era. TV revenue wasn't nearly the draw it is today. I'm not sure if I want Clemson to join the SEC or not, but it's not on the table, so why waste time considering it.

Financially, if we do anything besides stay in the ACC, we lose $20M a year for the next decade.

Of course Clemson counts contributions. Click on Clemson in the following chart. You will see. Then compare with any other school you desire.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/schools/finances/

The big difference will be the ESTIMATED $30 to 40 million SEC Network income which will be in addition to the 20 mil or so they already get from ESPN/CBS deal. Wont reach that amount for several years but with 80 million initial subscribers won't take long. The SEC Network revenue will be split 50/50 with ESPN and SEC. Then there will be 15 shares of SEC share - the league office gets one and the 14 schools each get one share.

Gonna be a cash cow and a serious game changer. But I can get the ACC Network on ESPN3.

24. Clemson
Another shadow SEC program in the ACC, Clemson is a cultural fit for the SEC that happens to be playing in the ACC. What's the difference between Clemson and South Carolina, you might be asking? Try about $40 million a year, that's how much bigger South Carolina's athletic department is going to be once the SEC Network money starts rolling in.

Fox has made a real mockery of news coverage. They purchased BR and did improve it but still let writers put work out with little to no fact checking. I love how FOX has a vested interest in down playing the SEC network, because of ownership of B1G network, but because they do not control many writers have done nothing but talk it up. Controlling what is in there best interest is a problem ESPN would never have.

It is only going to be between $19-$21 million more, but that won't be until year 2. The first year could be around $5-$10 million more after start up costs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

Aug 5, 2014, 12:38 AM

Those numbers are all the most optimistic projections. The B1G is the standard bearer and they have a better deal with no partnership, and a larger population base and alumni base and they don't make that much money.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Aug 5, 2014, 1:09 AM

There is this expectation that Carolina is going to all of the sudden start pulling in twice as much money a year. The facts don't bear that out. It's all projections and speculation. And no real Tiger fan would ever whine abt not being in the SEC. We're not.....we won't be....but we're in a good place. And we'll make plenty of money and win championships.

Because that's what they are right now it's all based on subscription and how each carrier handles the channel you nor anyone at the SEC office have a clue what the revenue stream will look like.

I love how coot fans associate their extra revenue to winning. Sort of tells the story if you ask me. That along with the probation came along during the streak. I guess you polish a turd enough and put a red bow on it, give jobs to some recruits parents and you start winning some games.

It kills me how many coots are on here posing as Clemson fans.

You do understand that all the contracts are signed. All the carriage fees are set. All that is left up in the air is advertising revenue. The SEC network will bring in +/- $440 million from carriage fees (this number is fixed) and another $170 million (projected based on other networks) in advertising revenue. While I understand why you would hope those numbers are optimistic it is just not the case.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

Aug 5, 2014, 6:47 AM

You do realize that the SEC had to buy back rights that paid them last year right? There base contracts from last season will go down. It's not like the SEC network is 100% added money. Sure they will make more but it is not projected to make more than the B10 and they are not making that much more per year. The initial projections were only about 2-4 million more per team. I don't think that somehow jumped to 10+.

Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

Aug 5, 2014, 4:43 PM

Also a little note for the article your numbers came from. I believe they are calculating 87 million viewers as direct TV list. Well that doesn't mean customers. From direct TVs earnings they finished with

"nearly 38 million customers across the Americas"

That combined with the network airing on the +150 package should do some damage to those huge numbers people are throwing around.

Aug 5, 2014, 8:25 AM [ in reply to Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year. ]

You do realize there is a cost associated with running the network? The PAC12 cost is 100 million so the SEC network will be at least the same. You do also realize that ESPN gets half the revenue? You do also realize that the SEC had to buy out TV rights from other carriers? You do also realize that those projection are based on every household in the 11 state SEC footprint subscribing to the network at a 1.40 per household per month? And every subscriber outside the SEC footprint paying .25 per household per month? Do you think they'll have 100% subscription rate? Also the SEC office will have additional cost associated with the network and will keep some money. Will the SEC team payout go up in 2014/2015 sports year from last year's 20.9 million? Yes will it go to 40 million? No Will the ACC have a network in 2 years? Yes. Will it make money? Yes

Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

Aug 5, 2014, 10:08 AM [ in reply to Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year. ]

No. The Big 10 network comes with the sports package and you have to pay for the sports package to get it. This package provides ESPNU, NFL network, Big 10 network, ESPN classic, ESPN news, The SEC network, NBC sports, FOX sports, and CBS sports. If I didn't pay for the sports package on my provider network the SEC wouldn't get the 1.40 for my household. The cable providers bundle all of the like programming into a package and sell it to their customers to make a profit they just don't add a charge on your bill.

Also the SEC doesn't get all the money they have a 50/50 split with ESPN, unlike the Big 10 and the NFL who owns the entire network.

I can only speak to DirecTv but the Big 10 network was a basic channel. I only paid for the sports pack when there was a Clemson game on ESPN U and then would immediately cancel but I always had Big 10 network. This was the genius of their deal and why it has made them so much miney, But that was before the era of shrinking cable subscribers, Netflix, and cable cutting, The SEC wanted the same type deal at a higher in footprint rate, Based on DIsh TV and Comcast they have not gotten it.

By larger you mean a few feet and by more expensive you mean it cost more to build in Columbia. In reality you are building almost exactly the same structure as Clemson currently has on campus and using the term nicer to describe anything in that trash dump is absurd.

Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

Aug 5, 2014, 8:26 AM

I'd like to throw some additional details out as regards the SEC network. The $30 million per school estimate that has been making the rounds is based on some pretty flawed logic. First, it is predicated on full subscribership. Meaning every single cable or satellite connected home in the U.S. would not only have access to the SEC Network but would actual be subscribed to it. Then, there would have to be zero overhead for running the network. ESPN would have to be taking zero cut of revenue (I can find no reference to how much they are getting but you can be sure it is substantial). And lastly, the SEC itself would have to be taking zero cut of revenue (the home office takes a full share meaning net revenue will be split 15 ways - not 14)

While the SEC Network is now bragging about their availability, they have hit 75 million of the 85 million total available subscribers with the DirecTv deal, they are playing semantics games. They do not have 75 million subscribers and, prior to the DirecTv deal, they were on a premium or paid tier on their two largest carriers. Dish Network has bundled them in the $11/month sports pack and Comcast has put them on the Digital Preferred tier. I don't know what percentage of Comcast subscribers splurge on Digital Preferred, but an article I found (it was actually about mlb baseball revenue) estimated that less than 20% of cable subscribers paid for any form of premium sports package. Comcast, DirecTv, and Dish Network account for roughly 55 of the 85 million subscribers the SEC Network is targeting. If DirecTv puts them on a premium tier too, which I expect they will, then the SEC network could just as easily have 11 million subscribers rather than the 55 million they are bragging about.

I'll add some final commentary. The SEC, in general, has been playing chess to the ACC's checkers. But we finally might not be in that bad a position. There are 28 million cable/ sat subscribers and 90 million people in the SEC footprint. There are 120 million people in the ACC footprint so it stands to reason there are roughly 37 million cable subscribers. That means that the ACC network can charge a significantly lower carriage fee and still match potential revenue for the SEC. The lower the carriage fee the more likely to be in a basic tier and maximize subscribership. And I firmly believe that Notre Dame gives us a national brand that no other conference rivals. At a $1 per subscriber in footprint and .$50 out of footprint an ACC network would crush the SEC's revenue projections. $732 million versus $490 million to be exact.

So, the next time a coot brags about their $35 million SEC tv revenue tell them that's nice, but what are they gonna do when we start making $52 million a year from tv revenue.

Thank you for breaking it down. I tend to do that once every 6 months or so when people get all excited about revenue. So far this time I have avoided it and maybe your post will help me stay away from it.

Based on previous calculations the SEC revenue was expected to jump to about 35 million. Now that number might rise based on the network selling better than expected but I would guess that would fall somewhere between 35-40 million in 2017 or so. Based on calculations without an ACC network I would expect revenue to top out at around 32 million.

Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

Aug 5, 2014, 11:26 AM

That assessment isn't too far off but is still not accounting for the tier in which the network is carried. Also you have to factor in with A&M and Mizzu getting full shares the total revenue per team will drop some. The Big 10 is projecting 45 million per team in total revenue in 2017 and I think that the SEC will be competitive if not beat the Big 10 by a small margin. I also think you will see the ACC revenue grow by a large margin in that same time frame. That will only be bolstered by the success of the SEC network as the ESPN will follow suite by creating an ACC network.

Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

Aug 5, 2014, 11:41 AM

The Pac 12 has full ownership of their network. They get all of the revenue but burden all of the operating expenses and start up cost. In terms of net gain, they haven't really made much yet.

The Big Ten and Fox have a 51/49 split. They share the profit but also shared in the start up cost and operating expenses.

The SEC Network is owned entirely by ESPN. I don't know if the conference agreed to help fund the start up cost or not, but you can expect ESPN is getting a BIG chunk of the revenue. They own the network. They aren't doing it for s**** and giggles or just to make the SEC rich. They are doing it to make the network money.

The way I understand it the SEC Network will be on the package that includes ESPN and ESPN2 with just about all the cable and satellite providers. Yeah, Dish and DirecTV have some little crappy $19.99 package that includes the local stations and maybe TBS and USA but the packages that most people have from about $39 and up will have the SEC Network. I think that's been part of the hold out from a couple of providers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

Aug 5, 2014, 4:26 PM

Even the "little crappy $19.99" package accounts for a large portion of the subscribers to direct TV. You are thinking like a sports fan but a lot of TV watchers only care about the major networks. I also looked at Dish and unless you get the 3rd tier 120+ package you do not get the SEC network. The normal 120 package comes with ESPN and the channels you listed.

Just looked and the network is only carried on Dish 120+, Direct 120+, and the Uverse U200 package. All of those are 3rd tier packages and up which means a majority of subscribers will not carry the channel.

You have to read the fine print on Dish TV too. It is listed in a bunch of packages but in the fine print it part of a $11/month add on after your introductory period.

Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

Aug 5, 2014, 12:06 PM [ in reply to Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year. ]

It is far more accurate than the blog posts pinning it at the $35 million per school split, it at least takes in account overhead and ESPN's share of revenue. But what it continues to do is mistake availability for subscribership. The whole "most successful launch" isn't quantifiable until checks are cut. The Big 10 debuted in 45 million homes - but it is on the basic tier on every system that carries it. Every single one of those customers is giving the Big 10 money whether they like it or not. Despite the SEC's obvious efforts to portray otherwise, the SEC network is not a basic channel on the largest provider. Dish network, unless you get as promo as a new customer, will charge you $11 a month for SEC network package.

Comcast has it in the preferred digital package. To put that in perspective that is an upgraded HD package. Only 75% of US households even have an HD tv. Many that do, including my parents and in-laws, have HD tvs with a basic non-HD cable connection. (Would drive me insane but it is fairly common.). So, Comcast probably won't be anywhere near 50% subscribership and if the MLB article numbers I found are true Dish network will probably be around 20%. That still leaves these numbers in the article far off. Time Warner is the only large carrier that I know for sure has put SEC network in their basic channel package.

The entire thrust of the SEC networks pre-launch mission was to be on the basic tier of every major carrier in the US. They wanted to match what the Big 10 Network had done in price structure and availability, The two largest providers in the U.S. have not played along no matter how they spin it. I see no reason to think DirecTv would be more generous. Assuming they have also put it in the sports package that means that the 3 largest providers reaching 65% of the total US audience have not done what they actually wanted. Of course ESPN controls the narrative and isn't going to say any such thing.

To me, the biggest threat of this whole thing is the burgeoning influence ESPN. They are already too powerful of a force in CFB. Their additional revenue should concern everyone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: SC will make 39 mil more than Clemsn this year.

Aug 5, 2014, 12:28 PM

Unfortunately I feel like CFB is already a subsidiary of ESPN. They own broadcast complete broadcast rights to 2 of the 5 major conferences and have arrangements with 2 of the others. I would love it if our association with Notre Dame would get NBC to break the bank for total ACC rights but that would take some intelligence and aggressiveness from our conference commissioner so I expect nothing.

There is nothing about it on the DirecTv website - in fact their help forum still says they're negotiating, The joint release makes no mention of what package tier it will be in. All that and you still have to read the fine print. On Dish TV the SEC network is on the homepage and advertised as a part of almost all their new subscriber packages. But in the fine print it is a part of the sports pack and reverts to $11 per month after your introductory period.

Re: I see this mentioned a lot

Aug 6, 2014, 11:54 AM [ in reply to I see this mentioned a lot ]

So because of the way it is reported with the AD and IPTAY it is hard to know exactly how much of the IPTAY donations are included in the AD donations. A few things about IPTAY and the AD make this difficult.

1. The Clemson AD can also accept gifts and donations that do not count towards IPTAY. Most in the form of money towards facilities.

2. IPTAY only shows number values for donations within a priority level. Many donors do not sign up for a IPTAY program they simply donate to IPTAY.

3. Donations reported by the AD do include some IPTAY funds but only those that require the AD to sign the check.

4. IPTAY also has projects such as the WEZ that collect donations but do not report with the IPTAY fiscal year donations.

5. Donations reported by the AD can come from IPTAY but do not necessarily come from the IPTAY fund. The money could come from these other projects or the surplus but still be counted as a donation for the AD.
