I need some help from some older Tigers...

As a younger fan, a lot of Clemson history has happened before my time. Recently I was reading an article on TCI, about the end of the Danny Ford era and it made me realize that I have no idea why he was fired/released? Could y'all please explain to me the whole situation and exactly what recruiting violations he commited in 1981, his relationship with the administrators, and the reasoning for his release... Thanks
GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!

I always heard it was a power struggle between Danny and administration and Danny wanted players dorms and Admin said no. But that may all be heresay.

That's pretty much the gist of it - it was a power struggle

as you say. Danny lost and his boss won.
In all of the violations that got us in trouble in 81, Danny (as Head Coach) himself was only mentioned in two of them. If memory serves correctly, one of those was when Danny paid or approved the payment of a delinquent doctor or dentist bill that resulted from a player who left the team and never paid it himself. Some of the violations occurred under Charlie Pell, before Danny, but many were after Danny took over as well.
No excuses for any of our violations, but I will say this: we weren't doing anything that all successful (and many not so successful) football programs of that era weren't doing.

I was told at the time by someone in IPTAY.......

who I'm sure given his position and stature would know that it was two things - one was a power struggle if you want to call it that between DF and Max Lennon who was the Clemson president at the time. The other was that if DF wasn't fired then the NCAA would come down hard on Clemson for recruiting violations.
I do remember the disagreements between DF and Max Lennon and the president being fairly public but can only speculate on the NCAA violations side of things. But I'm sure my IPTAY source knows what he's talking about.

Danny want around the IPTAY meetings publicly campaigning for a players' dorm even though the NCAA was about to outlaw them. Lennon did not appreciate it. Clemson was building Vickery Hall and had no intention of building a players' dorm. It was dumbness on both sides.
Plus Danny would ignore Bobby Robinson, the then AD. Danny would take more players on lesser bowl trips than Bobby would approve. Stuff like that. It was still a huge mistake to fire Danny. Lennon eventually resigned under huge alumni/donor pressure. The football program was set back 20 years when that moron Hatfield was hired.

The synopsis...

the NCAA was in the process of banning "football only" dorms. As a matter of fact, I think the ban came within the following two years.

Yes, seriously. I know it's so hard to believe that the man behind Clemson's only NC would be put into the ROH, but I tend to take peoples' word for it.

I always thought that our Admin did not like the idea of winning National Championships and drawing so much attention. CLEMSON could not grow fast enough to keep up and the Admin had to work harder which is not good. After Danny left, they were able to sit on their butts more and talk about things that don't matter.
That's just MY understanding.
