I like the Denzel Johnson take...

as a defensive back. We recruited him as a WR, DB, and a KR (How many kids are we telling this to?). He looks better at WR, and may be even better than Shadell Bell, but we are going to be stacked at that position for while. Peake, Williams, Scott, G Hop, Thompson, Cain, and McCloud will be on the field this year. Then in 2016 we'll add Chase, Powell, and most likely Overton... I just don't see Bell or Johnson cracking that rotation unless for some serious improvement.
However Johnson as at DB would be much needed, especially down the line. He's destined to redshirt, so he has time to find his way so that's a big plus. I think he's a safety but I'd LOVE to see him at CB. As of right now in 2018 at CB we'll have Fields, Chalmers, Trapp Jr, and Dawkins Jr... This can absolutely not happen AT ALL. Hopefully Dabo and company are able to pull a BIG TIME (like another Mackensie Alexander) player in the coming classes, because that's atrocious.
Sure, that's really far ahead in the future but that could develop into another positional depth issue like we'll have DE this year by waiting to the last minute to recruit the position heavily. If we don't take a CB in 2016 (we turned away Robbie Robinson...sigh and whiffed on Saivon Smith), then we could be in for another glaring depth issue at a more pivotal position in today's game with QB's throwing at those corners 25-35 times a game. Very important address a possible issue early on before it becomes a issue at all. Also he provides size at the position at 6'1-6'2 much like Tank. Of those young DB's Chalmers is the tallest at 5'11. Fields is about 5'10, Trapp Jr. is about 5'8, and Dawkins Jr. is about 5'7. I trust the staff, but I hope they handle this potential issue better than they did the DE recruiting issue the last few years aside from 2015, causing us to have to play inexperienced true freshmen immediately.
Best case scenario he's trained at CB the moment he steps on campus, redshirts, and dedicates himself to learning that position for his 5 years on campus.

He may not see the field until his 3rd year on campus... I like the ambition though.

I think he will be a cb. I also don't think any of these legacy recruits will be on scholarship for more than a year. Think they are getting a paid tryout.

It isn't over with Saivion Smith. He'll see LSU sucks this year and we're going to the playoffs

Well said but I don't think he can play CB. Looks like a safety to me. I much agree about the classes though. You'd think that Dabo has gone crazy with all the sons of players/friend's players/son's of staff etc. he's taken but I am trying my best to wait & see. At least we're down to one of the Alabama boys & he might play a lot. Another way of looking at the db classes is to say that we lose 5 safeties by 2016 & 5 corners by 2017. Don't know why we've chosen to use all the slots for the position in one year but he's gotten away with it so far. And TEs. Man! 7 on scholarship & another on the way! What will we do with them? We barely use ONE now. Of course, if they can find another Mack Alexander &/or Jayron Kearse, then that player can make up for a # of guys who will never play. I would just feel better if we had a couple of more celebrities in the defensive backfield & one at DE. We should have a pretty good idea of where we are after 09/17 - @ Louisville. I hope to be there.

The thinking on TE are that these are big athletic guys that can slip into OL or DL positions if TE is full. The best HS TE is far more athletic than the best HS OT or OG. Note Eric McClain was a TE in HS, as was Phillip Merling.

Good point but we are not trying to move any at present. Cannon Smith TE 18* 6-4 240 looks like the only possibility of those we have & that would probably take a couple of years. So far, they are leaving him at TE. I was at the NC game. His dad could really move.
