So, the CFP missed on SoCal. They missed on OHST.

They missed on TENN. They missed on BAMA. They missed on LSU. They missed on Ole Miss. Heck, they missed on us. Their ability to determine which teams are better than others at any given time, and which teams deserve to be in a playoff, is extremely poor. They can't possibly know - that should be obvious and apparent to all. NOBODY can know. A playoff shouldn't be based on pretending that anybody can know, and is able to determine which 4 teams are most deserving.

I believe they shouldn’t do rankings until after conference championships that way they don’t put themselves in a tight spot like they will be in this year.. especially if TCU loses too

As long as it's based on the opinions of people who really think they can know, or even make a fairly accurate judgement, those opinions will be discussed and taking shape from day one, just as they are now, no matter how late we wait to actually vote and release polls.

The truth of the matter is sometimes only two teams really deserve to be playing for the Natty. The rest is just window dressing and boy are we gonna get a lot of window dressing in two years.

committee has UTAH #11, yet they thrashed #4 SoCal. They were WAY off in their evaluation/projection as to which of those two was best, and/or most deserving to be in the 4-team playoff. Are you going to tell me with a straight face that they will have the REAL top for accurately figured out in a matter of days, to the point where the #5 team would not stand a real shot?
As if their accuracy and legitimacy will take a quantum leap over the next few days.

And had Caleb Williams not been playing hurt most of the game, it could have been a completely different game. USC was in complete control until his injury. In my mind they still should stay at 4 over Ohio St even though I would be amazed if it happened.

Answer: Nobody.
That's the lesson in all of this. It shouldn't be based on opinions. It should be based on winning through a process of elmination. Losers get eliminated down the stretch, and to the winners go the spoils.

That makes sense to me. Conference champs. Then just have to figure out seeding/ranking with Power 5 and GO5. Probably top two get a bye? Would be much more tidy with only 8 conferences.

The regular season is the playoffs. It is the elimination of those who lose. Isn’t that essentially what happened to USC last night? And essentially us when we laid eggs against ND and SC? Every team has a chance to win out. Few, if any, actually do.
The expanded playoff idea is a solution in search of a problem.

process, absolutely, but as it stands the regular season alone does not provide enough match ups to determine a champion. A playoff is the answer, and the only question is, how do we determine who qualifies for that playoff? Regular season results should be the most important factor, as you said, using the regular season itself as an elimination process. I believe that is bets accomplished through conference championships.

Imo, the only fault with the playoff committee is that they appear to begin their opinion using the AP poll as a guide. However, knowing that the better teams progress though out the season and are better at the end than from the beginning, using the AP poll to start the process has not done no harm other than hurting people's feeling.
Who thinks we haven't crowned the best team since the PO began? I think most of us agree that the PO system has always worked.

remain as objective as possible, and stick to their criteria which is meant to insure that. The problem is, they are human, and unavoidably subject to the influence of the media narrative and other rankings that start pre-season.

So, before last night OHST was not one of the best 4 teams.
Dec 3, 2022, 7:45 AM

Within a matter of minutes, or hours, depending on how you look at it, they became one of the 4 best. Also, last night, before SoCal and Utah played, the committee was telling us that SoCal was not only better than Utah, but as the #4 team, they were clearly better, by a significant margin, than #11 Utah. At some point, a few minutes or hours after that game kicked off, it became apparent that at that moment in time, they were noticeably wrong, and that in fact, last night Utah was decidedly better than SoCal.
What this clearly demonstrates is, that the committee at no point in time is able to accurately determine that any one team is better than another, much less which 4 teams are better than the rest. The committee, no matter how good they are and how hard they try, is guessing, and rendering an opinion, which we know for an absolute fact, stands a pretty good chance of being wrong. Last night proved it. The past weekend proved it. The week before it proved it. And so on.
Look, I know we don't live in a perfect world, where all 131 teams can play each other to determine a champion. We have to have some way of whittling it down to a manageable number of teams for a playoff. All I am saying is that we all know that what we have is not accurate, and cannot possibly, reliably give us the 4 "best" teams. It is a compromise, which is necessary, and it quenches our thirst for enjoying college football and crowning a champion; it gives us, as college football fans, our fix ... but we can do a lot better.

Did you watch the game last night? The game was closer than the score indicated. More importantly USC was up big until Caleb Williams got hurt. He was out there playing and could hardly walk.
Why should OSU be rewarded because it is tough to get hurt watching games on the couch?

determination based on factors at the time of those rankings. Then things changed, and so did those rankings. The disruption to college football caused by the Transfer Portal and NIL Collectives just makes it harder for them, or anyone else, to truly be able to predict greatness these days.
And, it ain't going to get any easier the next couple of years, either.

The fact that the rankings change from week to week,
Dec 3, 2022, 8:38 AM

proves my point, which is that at no point in time does the committee really know, with any reliable accuracy, which teams are better than others. Otherwise, there would be no need to revise the rankings every week. The rankings change because they are wrong every week and need to be updated accordingly.

Dang we may have been in really good shape with convincing wins against NC and SC.
Why I was not too hyped up on the ranking 3-4 weeks ago. This always seems to happen and besides Ga not sure anyone could have considered any in the top 4 to lock it down.

This is stupid logic that implies there should never be an upset and every game should only have the higher ranked team win. How fun would that be?

So, what you are saying is...

...the committee should not post any rankings until this Sunday?
Committee: If the season ended today, these are the top 4 teams. Fan: But, the season doesn't end today. Committee: That's why we'll put out another ranking next week. Fan: But, the season doesn't end next week. Committee: What's your point?

Wrong. The committee ranks based on the results of the season "to that point." They do not prognosticate. Also, the committee knows that as new results emerge, the rankings will reflect that. What do you allow your panties to twist so?
