Every team in the country uses the portal except for clemson and the military academies.
When you use one teams loss to justify not using the portal, just remember the team that beat them (unless it is clemson or a military academy) also used the portal.
Shouldn't the beatdown that we took by uga (one team uses portal and the other doesnt) hold more weight for this discussion than fsu losing to bc? (Both teams use the portal)
You argument is stupid.

The crazy part is we could have landed all 3 of them and that wouldn’t have changed the score of the game. It would be people say we don’t use it enough instead of we only need 2 or 3 players.

That's because we have many issues far beyond just the portal. I still think selective portal use is one of the fixes but it is far from the only one needed.

My argument is backed up by stats and strong evidence to support my position. 32% of all players in college football used the portal. Since 2021, clemson has lost three, three, and four games. That isn’t the standard Dabo set. The on-field product has went down hill since the portal explosion. Every national champion since 2019 has had as high as 15% of their starting roster as starters. The portal is equivalent to basketball one and dones. Coach K refused to use one and done because Duke doesn’t do things that way. Until they did. Coach K couldn’t compete against one and done teams. He took one and done players and was the king of college basketball. The portal is equivalent to free agency in the nfl. Imagine a team NOT using free absence because they don’t like it. That’s Clemson. You’re in the fringe not seeing the talent gap between Clemson and the elite. We were the elite. We were bullying the UGA’s, Ohio State’s and Alabama’s around. We can’t compete within our own conference. Keep this receipt. I am. I’ll be reminding you the day Dabo changes.
I hate the portal and NIL. However, it is the law of he land. It isn’t going away. We evolve or continue this slow death. Sure, we can be Iowa doing it Dabo’s way. The best is the standard. I want to compete for it all.

I don't think it needs to be a wholesale adoption. We needed three players, arguably four: QB, WR, DE, with an OL as a maybe.
I do think those additions could've made a difference. I would've gone after Chandler Morris. His career stats are solid, just hit by injuries. QB room would be better for it. Peter Woods is phenomenal, but he doesn't have the speed on the edge against teams like UGA. WR - pretty evident the room is lacking an alpha. Maybe it's a freshman.

We don't "not use the portal". What we don't do is offer guaranteed NIL$ to a player to come here. So, guys we offer in the portal don't pick Clemson.
This isn't a portal dilemma, it's an NIL dilemma.

But everyone except us seems to have figured out the dilemma, and most of the teams (other than the blue bloods) don't have the dollars to offer everyone what they want, but they still find good talent to fill gaps and add depth to improve their programs. If it really didn't help, then more programs would be like Dabo, rather than Dabo standing alone.
In business, we always benchmarked our best competitors when working on our strategic plans. The best in college football have found a way to selectively manage their rosters with a blend of HS and Portal recruiting and they continue to have success. In order to remain elite you change with the times and leverage all the resources available to you.
Stubbornly standing alone and thumbing your nose at the changes because you don't like them simply gets us where we are.

Clemson needs to play the best players available. Maybe they are? Cole Turner, Adam Randall, heck Barrett Carter is all hype. Jayden Luckis is slow. Etc…

I hate to break it to the genius posters Clemson mountaineers®, to pull equal or better talent than we have already from the portal, you better have a huge NIL bank or be ready to have your feeling hurt. I would be willing to bet that if Clemson had the same NIL bank as the school's using the portal to build rosters from, Dabo would be playing a totally different tune about the portal. Dabo isn't about to confess that Clemson's NIL bank isn't big enough to compete in the portal, and to do so would be like saying we want you but we can't afford to pay you the same as a GT, one of our longest rivalries!!!

That's just a cop out. Many schools with fewer resources than us are finding talent to help them. You can't watch a game right now without hearing someone make a great play followed by the school they transferred from. There are at least 3000 in the portal at any one time. OK, so maybe we don't compete for the top 5% because of cost but there is still value to be had in the other 2850 athletes available that get picked up every cycle.
And when have you ever seen Clemson not find financial resources when needed? Everything we have is top notch and competes right there with all the blue bloods of college football. When Dabo asks, he gets.
We are a resilient university who knows how to find a way when we are motivated to act. But it starts at the top and if he isn't bought in, then it definitely won't happen.
