Our OOC schedule this year.

**disclaimer.... this post is about our schedule. Everybody knows that if we won more games, we would have a better chance of getting into the tourney. That is common sense to most of us.**
I continue to hear people say that brownell scheduled a "cup cake schedule" this year in the OOC. While the schedule ended up being weak, it was not intended that way. Every team that we scheduled except for penn st and usc upstate performed worse than they did in the previous season. Kind of wild and seems very rare. On top of that we had to play historically bad Louisville twice. So we played the 2 worst power 5 teams 3 times this year. Lol.
Iowa - net ranking was 14 in 2021. This year, they are 39
Loyola chicago - NCAA tourney team and final net ranking in 2021 was 28. This year they are 269
Richmond - NCAA tourney team and final net ranking in 2021 was 84. This year they are 159
Cal - final net ranking in 2021 was 150. This year they are 313
uSUCK - final net ranking in 2021 was 93. This year they are 234
Loyola Maryland - final net ranking in 2021 was 260. This year they are 321
Bellarmine - final net ranking in 2021 was 197. Would have been an NCAA tourney team if eligible. This year they are 258
The Citadel - final net ranking in 2021 was 229. This year they are 331
Towson - final net ranking in 2021 was 71. This year they are 129
Usc upstate - their final net ranking in 2021 was 263. This year they are 255
Penn state - their final net ranking in 2021 was 88. This year, they are 48.

I've thought that too, most years Iowa, Penn State, and Richmond are good schedule boosters, even Loyola Chicago, surprised they were so bad this year.
It would be nice if Clemson could play in a decent tournament early in the year like the Battle for Atlantis, always lots of good teams at those events. We usually end up playing at the Denny's Sea Island Classic against random teams.
To be fair if we had beaten Iowa we would have played TCU, and then this whole conversation may be different.

I don't think so...

largely because of the three bad losses to SC, Loyola-Chicago, Boston College and Louisville. Really hard to overcome those two Q3 and two Q4 losses.

Did we have any bad losses this year? I hadn't heard of them before just now.

Obviously losing to those teams hurt us. Why are people including BC as an inexplicable loss? They also beat WF in Winston Salem, UVA, VT twice, and only lost to Duke by 1. They ended the ACC schedule 6-5. They weren't an awful team by the end of the year.

BC had lost 4 of their last 6 games...

before playing Clemson and those two wins were against Louisville and Notre Dame.
It is a game Clemson absolutely should have won.
That said, the losses to SC, Loyola-Chicago and Louisville were certainly worse than the BC loss.

BC beat us as part of a 6 game stretch when they went 4-2.

Quinten Post did not play until 12/31. It took him a few weeks to round back into shape. He was at full strength when we played them.
During that 6 game stretch, he averaged 21 points per game. We did a good job on him, holding him to 10 points, but focusing on stopping him allowed others to hurt us.
Plus, we were without Brevin Galloway and Alex Hemenway for that game.
While I agree that we are a better team than BC and should’ve won, you are purposely glossing over several key factors.

True. Losing to TCU would have prob been better for us than beating cal.

That was a bunch of work when you could have just said if we had not lost to Louisville we would have been in.

Read the disclaimer at the top. That was for dullards like you.
If you can't have a rational conversation without crying about the Louisville loss, then kindly shut up.

Intent doesn't forgive poor performance. Three losses kept us out of the tourney and all three of the teams we lost to were worse than anticipated. There's no excuse for any of those three losses, none.

the performance against it".
So freakin what some of them were expected to be better.. thay still beat us when they sucked. That's precisely why we're in NIT instead of the real tournament.
Lol, and you have the nerve to call others "derp".
Stay caustic, Judge Mountaineers!

This post was specifically about our schedule. There is no rational conversation about our basketball team. Only conversations with uneducated people like yourself. Derp, Brad this, deep, Brad that.

OOC was bad before the season started.

Good info, however, my take on it is different. Assuming they stayed exactly the same as the prior year, the OOC was still weak. Your numbers. Iowa - 14. Ok, good. LC - 28. Another decent one although LC year in and out is up and down. Richmond - 84. Not good. Not the worst, but nothing to be excited about. Cal - 150. Not good at all. USC - 93. Not good. But we must play them so it is what it is. LM - 260. Why would we do this? Bal -197 horrid. Citadel - 229. Horrible Towson 71 - ok, should give us a game. USC upstate - 263. Horrible Penn state 88. Again - decent, at best.
The average ranking was 99. 6 of 11 in top 100. 5 at 150+.
Even without deterioration- the OOC schedule was more than weak. Then, of course the ACC was horrid, and Clemson somehow only played uva, Duke, unc, and Miami once. We managed to get fsu and Louisville (both historically bad) twice Wake, gt, nc state, vt, - twice as well. So per luck we missed the harder games in ACC while the OOC schedule was weak and got worse.
I personally would rather play harder games and lose than beat up cupcakes.
Just fyi. Duke played OOC - Kansas Oregon state Xavier Purdue Ohio state Iowa And yes, a few cupcakes. Huge difference don’t you think?

Dang the schedule was bad and we still lost to 2 off the list that we should have beaten even if we would have had to play minus a couple of people.
That my friends is coaching. Losses are losses but do not lose to teams that should be gimmes on most nights.

Brad tries really hard schedule good teams for us to play.

We would love to be in Atlantis or Maui Invitational but those are mostly blue blood teams. We are left to schedule other neutral site games/tournaments as best we can.
It’s really hard to do a home and home with a good team.
Brad has been petitioning the ACC for years to schedule more conference games before Christmas so that we can play in some good non conference games after the new year. That’s fallen on deaf ears.
Bottom line: he wants to schedule tougher opponents, and as you said, this year’s schedule would have been a solid one if several of the teams we played in the non conference had performed to their usual standard.

Not correct. I posted above that even if the teams were the same as the prior year, our OOC was poor. Comes from scheduling cupcakes.
