maybe he can play and maybe he can’t, but offering players with this ranking is exactly why we’re in the position we are.

A lot of our best players during the 2015-2020 run were 3 stars. Clemson has never been elite at recruiting outside like 2 years

a clue how to develop kids, but sadly this staff does not. And none of those three stars were rated this lowly. It’s a whole different era, there is no need to be offering kids of this level when you can go get a more proven player in the portal, but once again this is showing us that this staff simply does not grasp the concept of how to compete in today’s environment.

Dude we’ve averaged like 11 in rankings under Dabo. And we always get our share of elite players. Keep up with the denial while our program continues to fall.

lol maybe 1 or 2 guys but a vast majority of our true difference makers were all 5* / top 100 talents

AJ terrell, Clelin ferrell, Justyn Ross Mackenzie Alexander, all top 100 players

wilkins, Dexter and Trevor Lawerence, Hyatt Higgins, all top 25 players in their classes.

Watson the second best QB in his class,

Even guys like Deon Cain, Artavis Scott, Huggins Ray-Ray etc. were highly touted guys who might not have been super stars but were usually well respected in the recruiting world.

QB
DW4 high 4* or low 5*
Bryant - 3-4*
Lawrence - 5* and #1 player in the class

RB
Gallman - High 3* to low 4*
Etienne - 4*
Choice- 4*

WR
Mike Williams - 4*
Scott - 4*
Renfrow - walk on
Cain - 5*
Higgins - 4 or 5*
Rodgers- 4*
Ross - 4*
T. Thompson, Overton, Powell 4, Ray Ray - all 4*

OL
Mixed bag of 3*, 4*, and 5*. Not gonna name them all, but it was definitely the least talented offensive position in terms of recruiting rankings and probably on-field performance too if we're being honest.

DL
Dodd - 3*
Watkins - 4*
Reader- 4*
Lawson - 4*
Wilkins - 5*
Huggins - 4*
Bryant - 3*
Cle - 4*
Dex - 5*
Tyler Davis - 4*
XT - 5*

LB
O'Daniel - 4*
Goodson - 3*
Joseph - 3*
Boulware- 4*
Simmons - 4*
Lamar - 4*
Skalski - 3*
Chad Smith - 4*
Venables - 4*
Spector - 3*

Safety
Kearse - 4*
Jadar Johnson - 3*
Van Smith - 4*
Muse - 3*
Wallace - 3*
Turner - walk on? I think

CB
Tank - 4*
Alexander - 4*
Fields - 4*
Mullen - 4*
Terrell - 4*
Booth - 4*

Ive probably missed a few guys, but i think thats at least the vast majority of the major contributors during our playoff run. There are a handful of 3*s and a couple of walk ons, but the vast majority of these guys were blue chip recruits including just about everyone at QB, WR, DL, and CB - our strongest performing groups during that run. You see most of the 3* players at OL, LB, and safety - position groups that were solid during that run, but not at the same level as the other groups.

My overall take away is that talent really matters and, while there are always a few exceptions, mo stars is mo better.

Etienne was a 3* player until after signing day, when the front-runner recruiting services ‘re-evaluate’ recruits after signing day based on the prestige of the program (Clemson was a very prestigious ‘brand’ back when ETN signed). ETN was upgraded via this ‘after the fact’ silliness from 3* to 4*.

DJ Reader was another 3* (more of a OG prospect, according to recruiting services, than a DT prospect) who got upgraded to 4* after signing day.

Jordan McFadden got more than token PT during the great run. He was 3* and won Jacobs Blocking Troohy.

Tremayne Anchrum was starting at RT in his true FR year of 2016. He was a 3* and played in the NFL (not just practice squads).

Eric MacLain was a 3* TE that grew into the body of a OG. MacLain was a very good OG during our big run.

TJ Green was hardly even rated. I think he was a 2* by some rating from some recruiting service.

And the reason we were successful during that stint was.

Re: #2183 on Rivals - Jaheim Lawson wss #198 DE per Phil Steele composite rating

Jaheim Lawson was the #198 rated DE (Phil Steele’s composite rating from various recruiting services).

He was a very late offer and subsequent committment.

Very late offers have the benefit of seeing pretty much a player’s entire development from their HS career. A player who didn’t really ‘start to grow’ until his SR HS year offers an interesting potential. He might have significantly more natural physical growth in him.

With this guy, I’m guessing that few TNetters know much about him and his overall HS career. I’m betting that our staff has looked into this. I’m also very confident that our staff has been shaking the bushes for other similar prospects that had committed to some 'lesser' programs. For some reason (carefully considered), we decided this was our best shot at getting someone who will work out for us at DE.

I hope he signs with us.

No the reason we are in this mess is because the 4 star and above players that are starting in 6/11 spots on defense are playing as one stars ...

if that's become our approach/strategy regarding hs then we're in the midst of a downsizing rebuild where the possibility of 'success' is dependent upon significantly lowering expectations, yet again-

Could be. Vic Beasley and others. But they were recruited by the bigger p5 schools. Interesting to me is that Tom Allen offered him. May be semantics but I don't recall Tom getting involved in the recruiting.

I'm hoping he's a depth piece that we feel could contribute in 27... and therefore we'll get a transfer highly rated for next year. That said, this does appear to be right from the Dabo playbook the last 5 years. We miss on all our targets, then backfill with project and development kids from high school.

I really thought there'd be some from all the good schools that fired coaches.

Why even make these kind of offers? This is just more proof that Dabo isn't willing to change. Just wait for the portal to open and revamp the roster then.

Disagree 100 percent. Allen deserves to have at least a year with his own coaching picks and recruit picks. He came here with just his son. The defensive head coach deserves to be able to pick his own coaching staff. Look at all the 5 star defensive guys we have that have not met their potential. Either that of they are just not using it. I think it is coaching.
