Dabo's defense of DJ.
Jul 21, 2022, 4:05 PM

1. DJ will walk through a brick wall for that man. Dabo is telling DJ, "I got your back."
2. If I were a parent and heard him stick up for a player this way my first reaction would be, "That's who I want my son playing for."

Some QB's respond to the Spurrier method of love. Danny Wuerrfel loved it.
The only guy who was harder on his QB's than Spurrier is Jimbo Fisher. Winston loved it. I'm an FSU fan, but if my son were being recruited to play college football, no way would he have gone to play for Jimbo.

Many would say Jimbo wasn’t hard enough on Winston! His off field behavior was terrible with no consequences.

I remember when he was suspended

But showed up on the sideline dressed out and ready to go anyway.
I thought it made Jimbo look like a coach with no control of his players on national TV.

I think Bret is referring to how Jimbo was hard on Winston on the field in practice and in games...... not on his behavior off the field (other than he wanted him to stay eligible). Jimbo would not cared if he he committed murder as long as he could perform on the field!

Sorry. Hard on him ON the football field and practice field. Jimbo was anything but a disciplinarian off the field. That is why he will never have long range success as a coach at any school. His lack of discipline about all things non-football is legendary.
But, on the field - practice and game - he is a raving, berating lunatic.

This is why Winston liked Jimbo and would do whatever he wanted on the field--he protected him off the field.

I believe Dabo has supported and been there for DJ, especially with the issues with Big Dave. DJ and his father are not close and Dabo has stepped in to have his back, through good and bad.

I loved Dabo's quote and his standing up for DJ.
I also took it as a subtle reminder to both message boarders and writers that Dabo just might know what he's doing.
I hope DJ kills it this year, but I'm confident we'll get improved QB play. If we could just be a top-30 kind of offense this year we'll be tough to beat.

Hope you're right but don't bet the ranch on it...This is his third year and you don't go from dead last in the ACC at QB and close to last in the nation to good QB in the blink of an eye...We don't need a freak we need a good QB that can read defenses, throw receivers open and win! Everything else is dumb as hell if we want to be a great team...DJ looked sick all year and he didn't even have COVID!

Totally disagree with you. With an experienced group around him DJ looked like a world beater (2020), it is irresponsible and totally wrong to think he went from Incredible to worthless in one season as well. What happened last season is very easy to point out! Clemson's football team had an unbelievable amount of injuries to the ENTIRE offense! No one seems to understand the impact of this. Let me break it down another way. Only 2 people who started against Georgia also started and played the majority of snaps, the remaining 12 games! TWO people! One of them happened to be an INJURED QB (DJ)! The other was Jordan McFadden the left Tackle! The skill positions were decimated with injuries and in some cases were starting a walk on who never plays until mop up time. Our 2 best WRs the last several games, were 2 true freshmen and a former walk on. I cannot remember a football team that offensively had the attrition that CU had last season, and I can sure say there is no team in College Football History that has lost 9 starters for a chunk of the season and still won their conference, let alone even made the playoffs. Clemson last year was within 2 plays of doing both!

success I am sure he craves. Nothing would make me happier.
Yet, I prefer to err on the side of caution. Dabo is expected to support his team. He's also expected to win ball games, something he knows. Thus, if any player is not producing, the staff has a duty to make tough decisions. They and Dabo have done just that previously.
I am optimistic for DJ....cautiously optimistic.
GO TIGERRRRRRRRS!

Its great that Dabo is saying all the right things at the moment but it won't mean anything to the player or his family the moment he gets benched so let's stop pretending any of this is anything more than coach speak to try to boost the confidence of a clearly shaky player.
