Interesting situation for me this preseason.

I know this is a Clemson board. I make it a point to greatly limit my discussion of FSU football, except for conference realignment. I know y'all aren't interested in me giving a preseason analysis of FSU strengths and weaknesses.
But, I am struck by this situation this year.
As I start to talk football, I sometimes forget which board I am on because the posts would be virtually essential.
Both teams should have elite defenses. Clemson has a better LB corp, but FSU has a better DB (probably). DL will be a strength for both.
Both teams have question marks, and a huge diversity of opinion, about the QB.
Clemson has the best RB, but FSU has more depth.
Both teams have young, talented WRs but basically unproven.
And, both have OLs that should be far better than last year.
So, what is the difference and who has the advantage?
I have come to the same conclusion about both teams. The team will be as good as the OL makes it. Elite, or even very good, OL = Trip to Charlotte. Average OL = 9 win season. Below average OL = 8-4.
The first couple of games of the season I'm gonna be watching how well the OL can make the run game so effective it makes the defense be susceptible to play-action passes, and they can protect the QB in pass pro. 8, 9, 10, 11 or even 12 wins depends on the OL. Every other part of the team will be more than capable.

Agree. As regards Clemson, our weakness has been our OL. Hopefully Matt Luke can make it better. It is a work in progress, so we shall see.

Our secondary is young but extremely talented with starts under their belts. I think they have a very high ceiling.

If I were asked to compare the two teams (which I still think will have a rematch in Charlotte):
DB - slight advantage FSU LB - advantage Clemson DL - very slight advantage Clemson (both will be among the best in the nation) QB - equal (I think both will perform well running their different offenses as good as the OL will allow them.) RB - advantage Clemson in starter; advantage FSU in depth ST - advantage FSU OL - unknown, both could range from very good to below average.

I think you’re pretty spot on. I give a slight nod to Clemson at QB. The only reason I say that is because we know exactly who/what DJ is, hopefully Klubnik improves and if he does, I think Clemson has the better option there.

FSU's ceiling will be decided by DJU

If his play finally matches his potential, the Noles will be a tough out.

And, DJ's ceiling will be determined by the OL.

If they can run block effectively, then the entire offense opens up. Norvell's offense is not what you have seen with Travis at QB. He ran that offense because of Travis' talent and the fact the OL was not good enough to run block effectively. 3rd and 2 was a passing down. 4th and 1, which Norvell loves to go for was a pass or an outside run.
That is not his offense. He likes a 60/40 run pass split with runs going inside out. He runs a combination of inside zone, power, traps and a whole lot of counters. He likes to run play action passes with a lot of vertical passing. He couldn't do that with Travis because, in spite of his great athleticism, Travis did not have the arm to throw deep.
If the OL is good (big IF) then DJs ceiling is a lot higher.

Bretfsu.. I think FSU hit the portal perfectly last year. They could do it again this year. I'm betting that it's not going to work out every year. I've seen many talented teams under perform because the team chemistry was bad. Bringing in a bunch of new players every year can easily backfire. I could be wrong but I think using the portal the way FSU has is not going to bring the consistency they are looking for. Definitely think you got screwed out of the playoffs last year.

Mike has done an outstanding job using the portal to bring in talented guys without them become cancers in the locker room. It is a very fine line to walk. All indications are the portal guys actually buy into the culture and help grow it.
But, he has said on several occasions that you can't build a team relying strictly on the portal. His HS recruiting has improved every year. He is still using the portal, but doing so less and less every year. He uses the portal to fill holes. The problem he had when he arrived was there were more holes in the roster than in a screen door. It's talking time to build HS recruiting, but he is doing it. And, he's doing it the same way he's using the portal - bringing in talented players who will buy into the culture and not become cancers.
How successful will he be over the long haul? Only time will tell.

Help it grow? Didn't FSU have a bunch of guys choose to quit rather than play in a bowl game? Those "non-cancerous" guys quit and watched their teammates take the worst beating in bowl history.

good take. I'd be happy to see both team's OLs outperform and meet up in an epic battle in December. Best two gridiron teams the conference has ever seen both at full strength again simultaneously would be amazing in the current state of affairs.

You don't have to worry about the play action because your receivers wont have a clue as to where DJ will throw the ball.
