How the ACC dissolves.

Crazy idea I had while sitting at the beach a couple of hours ago.
Need 8 votes to dissolve the conference.
1. Big 12 decided they are all in on expansion. They not only look to the PAC 12 and head west, they also look east. They currently have West Virginia as sort of the lonely guy in the east. So, they offer Pitt, Louisville and VT. (All three would accept because they see the ACC will soon dissolve and no other conference is gonna offer them.
Now, we just need five more.
2. SEC offers FSU and Clemson. 3. B1G offers UNC and UVA.
Now, you just need one more. Lots of options:
A. Miami has been rumored to be headed to SEC and also rumored to B1G. Pick one. B. B1G might go after Cuse or BC or both. C. Big 12 might want Cuse or BC, who knows? Big 12 may decide not to stop at 24.
Crazy things run through your mind when you are an old man sitting at the beach and its too windy to fish so you are bored out of your gourd.

I feel like Miami would almost lead the pack out. Not for demand, for their own personal preference at this point losing since being here.
I could see 8 votes quickly really. It's just the money thing now. Court likely it seems

That's not crazy. All that is needed is a guaranteed landing spot for 8 teams that will leave them no worse off than they are or are going to be. That allows the Big 12 into the discussion, since any team that goes there will be no worse off financially, and in fact better off because that would ensure the survival of the Big 12 due to the demise of the ACC.
I think that alternatively Clemson and FSU will consider negotiating a buy-out with the ACC of some large magnitude, payable over time, say the remaining 12 years of the GOR, that allows them to take their GOR with them. The ACC would not have a lot of incentive to negotiate away a lot of money though. Why should it? If that happens, and assuming Clemson and FSU are asked to join the SEC or B1G, and most importantly are treated as equals when it comes to money, they can use half the extra annual revenue to pay the ACC and keep the other half, which is right about what they get now from the ACC, so they are no worse off than if they had stayed in the ACC. But at least they would be on solid footing conference-wise.

A couple cannot leave. The GOR is concrete on their feet. It has to be eight or more at once.

Nothing is regionalized. It's all national. Now the big thing is drawing power. How many eyes can you get watching you. This is why Clemson is so valuable!

More likely than some of the oens I mentioned. Certainly more likely than Cuse or BC.
Like I said, I was bored. Not really thinking too hard about being logical.

I can promise you neither Clemson nor FSU need more money. The ACC will not dissolve but needs to add schools.

The PAC 12 would love to make ACC money. The Big 12 just celebrated a new contract that make the same as the ACC teams. The ACC is the #3 overall conference it just has 2-4 schools with brands that could bring in revenue more aligned with the top 2 conferences.

Yeah. I was just trying to come up with 8 teams. NCSU could easily be one of those 8 in my wild scenarios.

we're staying away from crowds.

My wife likes beach far better than I do. This is my Christmas present to her. We are east of Destin, St. George Island. She loves the beach, but hates crowds. We're actually staying in Apalachicola, more known for fishing and oysters than beaches. Tomorrow going to Panama City Beach for a few days. We'll spend our time at a state park on a barrier island.
As for Destin, I'm not at all familiar with it. 60 years ago, when I lived in Alabama, we would go there on some weekends. One 20 unit motel. One marina. 20 miles of the most beautiful sand in the world. (State of Florida should have bought the property and made a state park out of it, but that is another story.)
I assure you, they have several nice golf courses. I just don't know the names of any of them.
Same with fishing. I'm sure there are lots of places for charter boats. I've talked to people who have taken some fishing trips to Destin.
Have a great trip. Sorry I can't be more help.

I enjoy your posts about conference realignment. You usually offer well thought out and interesting scenarios. However, why in the world would the B1G go after syracuse or BC? Those are probably the last 2 schools in the ACC that would be added. I dont watch them often, but GT seems like a school that could have a lot to offer. They give you a great recruiting area in Georgia. Maybe, with increased money and dedication to football, GT could be something in 10 years

I agree with you. Like I said, I was just bored. Not really thinking clearly.
Started with the thought, "The only way to get 8 teams to vote to dissolve the conference is for the Big 12 to take 3 or 4 teams.

I think the SEC has North Carolina in its crosshairs. As much as I hate to admit it, they are a valuable commodity that expands their footprint and brings in a lot of wealthy and prominent donors.

I'm sure every school in the conference...

... is looking for a way out. The problem is somebody has to want them. So, seems to me like the most logical path forward is for the SEC, B1G and Big 12 to invite 8 or more teams to their conferences.
As bad as the ACC money is now, nobody is going to vote to dissolve the conference without already having a landing spot that assures them more money than they are getting from the ACC.
I was the guy who said the day the new commissioner was hired that his job was to figure out a way to preside over a conference as it dissolved and to help every school get the best deal possible.

The Big 12 money is the same if not less than the ACC’s contract through 2036. Yes, teams would go to the Big 12 if they were left out but I don’t see teams jumping at the opportunity to make the same money and travel more.

What if all ACC schools decide to leave the ACC, and then form a new conference and negotiate with E$PN to pay it the same as $EC ... forever.
