How so?

He did a less than stellar job at Louisville, TX, and then USF. What exactly am I missing? Charlie Strong had mixed success before getting a H.C. job and hasn't made that much noise.
What am I missing about this hire?

You know what his record is after removing those two years with Teddy Bridgewater? 51-50.
If you then remove his first year at USF where he flamed out badly after riding Willie Taggart's players for one year? 41-48.
This job is something Strong should be able to handle well enough. He's just not head coach material at the college level.

Very true. People don't realize what a total mess Mack left behind at UT.
The problem was the way Charlie Strong went about the clean up alienated everybody associated with the program. It was chaotic and he didn't "set the table" correctly.
Unfortunately, Strong's failure at UT ended up making Mack smell like a rose.

He gave us fits as a DC while at UofSuc, before taking a lateral move as DC for Florida. He was a darn good DC.

I remember Strong when he was at S Carolina and people spoke highly of him. I did not think he did a great job and could never understand why so many teams were picking him up in the years that followed. Now Saban? Saban is a pretty good judge of talent so who knows we will find out when we play them next.

a 'good hire'. Saban doesn't need the help. When he takes in these coaching mutts it's to bolster THEIR resume. 'Oh, look, he worked for Nick Saban. He's magically a great hire, now'. Charlie Strong will always be a good coordinator who wasn't HC material. It happens. I'm surprised he didn't just take a DC job somewhere that had a staff change. As Clint Eastwood once said, 'A man's got to know his limitations.'
