How much blame should the BOT get for agreeing to this effing buyout?

I don't think enough blame goes toward those who signed Dabo's stewpid freakin buyout agreement. Could they not have come up with anything different?

At the time it was hailed as a smart move to lock up one of the hottest coaches in America over the long haul. Hindsight is easy when you already know how it turns out.

I mean could they not have "locked him up" in say 5 year intervals based on performance?

I think the results were so stunning at the time and other teams were ready to open up the checkbook for him and the fact they thought they had their coach for life, they felt all of that justified what they did.

If the new contract/buyout was offered after the 2018 season I totally get it. If it was offered anytime after Trevor Lawrence left, it was a disastrous mistake.

It was Sept. ‘’22, a time where DJ had shined late in the’21 season after big games against BC and ND. At that time people thought he was next in the line of generational QBs and the golden years would continue and Dabo still had the magic touch.

Those BC and ND games were in 2020, not 2021.**

When Dabo was doing the dang thing... it was important to keep him here....so we wouldn't get poached so easily for him.

Same thing with the GOR....but it was a very short time period that it was best to protect the teams in the ACC. What we didn't know was how pizzzed off the other conferences would be... because we were kicking their arsess on the field as well as in the media ...that they would unite and band together with other teams and create super conferences....NIL...threw away the key to keep the portal locked at certain times....

As soon as we tried to act accordingly one way the next 2 days was a different narrative and a different landscape.

So basically Clemson University's absolute colossal eff up with the contract will be taught in the history books for the next 100 years on what NOT to do in a contract.

aTm got caught too. It was just where things were with buyouts back then, and now LSU. People were paying up for big names which is why we wanted to lock up Dabo for a long time.

In fact, I can see contracts in the future have a "Sweeney" clause which somehow prevents this kind of contract failure in the future. The man will live on as a legend in the contract righting business.

know how contracts work.

When you take one of the most successful coaches in the country and say "We want to lock you in...I mean...unless you have a bad season" then you are offering them nothing. No one signs a contract that says "The buyout is huge if we fire you when you go 10-2". The buyout is to protect a successful coach and hot commodity from getting canned for having a bad season. Like this one.

If Dabo is offered a buyout that is voided with a bad season, then it's not security at all. He knows to start entertaining offers from other schools.

If we have to give a top coach $10MM and a huge buyout to keep him, then offering him no buy out might put the salary at $15MM or $20MM.

There is nothing structurally in his contract that is crazy out-of-the-ordinary.

You seem to think Dabo's contract is a one off but the fact is every major coach has the same type of boyout. FSU, aTm, Texas, Allbarn, Florida and others have spent a king's ransom on failed coaches. It makes zero sense as coaches find a way to leave when they want to leave but the majority are fired.

I saw a proposal where coaches get paid per win plus a bonus for graduation, championships and other fringe items but only have a modest buyout. Looks like an NFL contract but without the craziness of a $50M buyout.

these kinds of massive buyouts have been foreseeably horrible ideas for years now, and all it would take is a clear-thinking AD and or BOT with cajones who isn't afraid to respectfully tell a coach that they're happy to pay them millions and sign on to a reasonable buyout to protect both parties, but not one that is financially prohibitive and masochistic. The fallout from these things has been seen over and over and over again for a couple of decades now, and frankly, I think a lot of coaches who were not willing to walk away received such contracts anyway (meaning the leverage wasn't really there, the schools just acted according to conventional wisdom).

It's stupid and EASILY avoidable.

Dabo earned his contract and buyout. He just has to keep earning it to get extensions.

He brought the program to the top, he is compensated like a top HC should, now he has to keep earning it.

Not even slightly. That's how contracts work nowadays for top coaches. Its the norm.

If I were a head coach at a major program, Id demand a monster buyout

Nov 4, 2025, 1:19 PM

Why? Because the job’s volatility has exploded. In the pre-NIL, pre-portal era, a coach could build a roster with some semblance of continuity. You recruited a kid, developed him, and—barring injury or academic issues—you had him for three years. That foundation is gone.

Now?

A freshman flashes for six games and gets poached with a better NIL deal.

A sophomore buries a depth chart and bolts for guaranteed snaps elsewhere.

A junior gets nudged by his high school trainer to “explore options.”

Roster management has become roulette. And while coaches are held accountable for wins, they’ve lost control over retention.

Meanwhile, fanbases are moodier, boosters are more impatient, and BOTs/admins are quicker to pull the plug. The leash is shorter, the expectations are higher, and the tools to meet them are shakier.

So yeah, if I’m signing up for that circus, I want a parachute. Call it a buyout, call it insurance, call it what you want. But don’t pretend the job hasn’t changed. The volatility is here to stay.

You see to be internally confused over the concept of "a buyout" and a "stupid effing buyout". Nobody is blaming the BOT for any buyout. They should be blamed over not just the stupid buyout, but also the contract length as a whole. Should have been more logical and incremental. If it was we wouldn't be where we are today and Dabo would have more incentive to play by the rules of the land. There will be a Sweeney clause in future contracts I guarantee it.

With Dabo's resume it was a good deal and it still is. You're basing "stupid effing" one bad season. When you look at the chart I attached of Dabo's record this is one most schools would love to have.

Also, the big buyouts are just going to get bigger. Much bigger as long as there's not control of portal and NIL. We have players that have been with 4 different schools!

Needless to say I think you're post is wrong.

Are you really young enough and naive enough to believe that the BOT would instruct Neff to fire Dabo even if he a $0 buyout? Really?
