There's something in these hills.

Which former players are calling out the toughness of our practices?

My understanding of the problem is the players not what they're made to do at practice. When we were winning championships guys like wilkins, boulware, skalski were leading competitive practices that drove everyone forward; that can't be replicated by coaching. Either you're player led or you're not.

eporter: “You can’t practice the pressure and the tension..”

Brent: “You can’t? Yeah, you can. And I believe it starts with the coaches. If it ain’t a game 7 mentality from the coaches, then it ain’t going to be for the players. If it ain’t the biggest 3rd down you’ve ever had as a coach, then it’s not going to be for the players. I believe in living and dying in that moment. I believe in that atmosphere. And it’s our job to create that environment, create that buy in, create that response, create that sense of urgency and desperation. That’s how you chase excellence.”

My uncle played under Ford during the national championship years and he talked about how rough the practices were. It made the games on Saturdays easier for them, which worked out great for them.

That was the key to the Cowboys success with Jimmy Johnson. The practices were so tough (and their players), they looked forward to the games. Then, Jerry got stupid ..and pillow fights under Switzer and the coaches afterwards. You practice hard to play hard. We’re a romper room for friends and family on the gravy train ..

There's not a player on the team that could have played for Danny. They would all throw up, cry and then quit. Could you imagine him on the sidelines with what's gone on this year during the games?

I remember years ago Dabo brought Danny in to observe a practice and it was reported here on TNet. Danny told him his practices were too light and I think Dabo tightened up a bit. I think this was back in 2013 or so

But yet Danny had one nc and many infractions and Dabo has two with much fewer issues. While I’m happy we had Danny at that time, I’m glad we have Dabo now.

Very few of the current walk-ons would be playing for Ford, and far far less of the walk-ons would be given scholarships.

The Ford teams were different. They were hard customers. The would-be walk-ons I met from 1979-1984 were hurt, walked off, or were walked off (cut). Walk-ons were used as tackling dummies until they quit or were hurt. The OL, DL, RB's, Safeties and LB's playing for Ford were at a 10x violence level compared to current players. The current WR's are a position that could play for Ford.

Danny Ford gave out chewing tobacco at kids football camp.

That’s a coach.

And serious…. I didn’t throw up.

I’ve watched practices when Ford was our coach. He would grab a player by the helmet and pull him towards his self and give them his two cents worth.
Dabo rubs his players on the head and that’s ok you will get them next time.
Team is soft!

But I heard back in the day Jeff Davis could bench 525-545 lbs and William Perry had the ACC leg press record with few workouts (a natural) ... The Ford team were scary and violent hitters. Fun to watch when hitting was allowed.
