217 - Anthony Waters Recorded 217 Tackles for the Clemson Tigers

First from ClemsonTigers.com:

Anthony Waters suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the second half of the Tigers’ 2006 season-opener. He had been a preseason first-team All-American and Butkus Award candidate. He was also in the preseason discussion for the Bednarik Award and the Nagurski Award. Waters played 36 games in his career at Clemson, including 23 as a starter. He tallied 217 total tackles over his career with 146 first-hits and 3.5 sacks.

And after Clemson, Anthony Waters has continued to demonstrate greatness:

After Clemson, Waters won Super Bowl XLIV with the Saints over the Colts. "I don't think anything compares to it," Waters said. "It doesn't get any better than the Super Bowl."

With a championship ring to his credit, Waters is no longer in the league, but continuing to make a difference in sports. "My coaches impacted my life so much, that I thought it was only right that I give back to the kids, no matter where I am," he said. He has found a home at Grier Middle School in Gastonia, North Carolina. It's a town reminiscent of Lake View, with similar gridiron success. In his first year as head football coach this fall, he took the school to an undefeated record and district title – the fourth straight for the school. Though his lessons span beyond the field.

"He's all about bettering the kids in the classroom, on the field and in life in general," said Grier athletic director Elizabeth Ferguson. "He has made those kids a family."

And he believes his job coaching isn't finished, even in the offseason. "Football is his passion, but in basketball he's one of the assistant coaches," said Ferguson.

Waters is still trying to teach lessons back at home, too. His game-worn Super Bowl jersey hangs in the hallways of Lake View High School, as something for those current Wild Gator athletes to look forward to.

"It's all about giving kids a vision, and to have them say 'if he did, it, I can do it.'"

Amen, Mr. Waters! Another true Clemson man!!

South Carolina Highway 217 is a 15.4 mile long state highway that connects the towns of Lodge and Smoaks with rural areas of Colleton and Bamberg Counties.

A park my family visited a lot in the 70s and 80s was High Falls County Park outside of Seneca near the intersection of Highways 130 and 183 on the west side of Lake Keowee. It has camp and RV sites, picnic shelters and tables, playgrounds, bathhouses, and the beach area. It doesn't have a waterfall as the name implies, but is great for swimming, fishing, and picnics, and is not far from the Chattooga River, Stumphouse, and the Clemson area. It is proof you don't have to be rich like the Keowee Reserve neighbors across the lake to have fun and enjoy nature.

Good thing there’re other things almost as good that’ll get us through these tough times, like Men’s Baseball, Spring Football, and the hope of making the NCAA tournament

It was, as any goatherd of the day could tell you, under penalty of sword prick, known as the Year of the Consulship of Praesens and Extricatus. Try saying that ONE time fast!

217 Years ago, it was the year 1807.

February 7 – Napoleon leads the forces of the French Empire in an invasion of the Russian Empire, and begins fighting at the Battle of Eylau against Russian and Prussian forces. (This was a doomed endeavor, as the Russian Winter would show him later.)

February 19 – In Alabama, former Vice President of the United States Aaron Burr is tried for conspiracy, but acquitted. (This was not the end of his problems, though, read below.)

March 2 – The United States Congress passes the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves "into any port or place within the jurisdiction of the United States ... from any foreign kingdom, place, or country" (to take effect January 1, 1808).

May 22 – A grand jury indicts former Vice President of the United States Aaron Burr for treason.

June 22 – Chesapeake–Leopard affair: British Royal Navy fourth rate HMS Leopard attacks and boards United States Navy frigate USS Chesapeake off Norfolk, Virginia, seeking deserters. This act of British aggression played a role in the run-up to the War of 1812.

July 13 – With the death of Henry Benedict Stuart, the last Stuart claimant to the throne of the United Kingdom, Jacobitism comes to an effective end.

July 20 – Nicéphore Niépce is awarded a patent by Napoleon Bonaparte for the Pyréolophore, the world's first internal combustion engine, after it successfully powers a boat upstream on the river Saône in France.

September 1 – Former U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr is acquitted of treason. He had been accused of plotting to annex parts of Louisiana and Mexico, to become part of an independent republic.
