Was reasonably common in airports until a few years back (or maybe I think it was a few years, and it's actually been 20 - you know how that goes), but definitely not a common event anymore.

Speaking of airports, that brings back a memory. The last time I had my shoes shined was in Atlanta at Hartsfield a couple days before Christmas 1998. I remember giving the guy a very nice tip for Christmas.
I saw shoe shiners in the Airport for years after, but by the time I retired in 2014, I don't remember seeing any. They could have been tucked away and I just missed them. When I flew into ATL, I usually only had a carry on bag and was scurrying off to the rental car center to head for a meeting.

When I worked in prison, we had a shoe shine inmate. He had special privileges and had a stand there in administration building.
On a side note, we had an inmate barber, cut your hair and gave you a straight razor shave for $2. Not going to lie, this man was in for murder and here he is shaving me with a straight razor. I was always nice to him lol

I let the barber do that only once after going to him 5 or 6 years and decided that would be my last experience with a straight razor- don’t remember how many Bandaids I had on my face

I had mine shined in the Atlanta or Boston Airport, I believe, about 8 years ago. I remember the guy was an older guy, and there was a wait. He could make that rag pop!

There was a shine stand around 2002 in the Charlotte Plaza bldg mezzanine. Our offices were on the 18th floor so saw the guy's services several times. Also, seem to recall one around the Merriott in the indoor corridor leading to the entrance of the former Ivey's building.

Lots of airports have shoe shine stations. Used to get mine done often when traveling for work up until 2018. Lot of shoes are not even real leather anymore so I assume thats a tough business.

The Knoxville airport still has anctive shoe shine station with 2 chairs. Last week I landed and a middle aged gal was shinning an older gentlemen's shoes.
FWIW, most military bases no longer have them. The boots that come with the new uniforms don't require polish and the low quarters are typically chlorofram.

They shine shoes in several locations downtown including the courthouse in Winston-Salem and also in the mall here.
They do shoe shines for the riders at most of the big horse shows too.
At the furniture market in High Point and downtown Greensboro too.
Incredible what a good shoe shiner can do buffing some shoes into incredible shine.
Greensboro at the airport too. Must be a NC thing.
