Some of you who wanted Brad fired are so upset that Neff fired Monte Lee, thereby crushing your ridiculous logic that the only reason Brad wasn't fired is because Neff didn't have the guts to fire someone.
Well, Neff does have the guts to fire someone, so you are left to accept the fact that Neff sees that Brad is a really good coach who has been unfortunate enough to have a bunch of disadvantages at Clemson.
I know, I know, I'm bringing up another sore spot for you, which is the realization that Clemson actually isn't the perfect place to work. For now, just trust me and accept the fact that our basketball program has had a bunch of disadvantages which Neff recognizes and is in the process of addressing.
Carry on.
P.S. Go Tigers!

Plenty of expectations but there has to also be an expectation of support. Neff said as much and stated he would provide the funding commitment required to be a very good program. After the support is in place then Neff has demonstrated his willingness to change coaches if they don’t meet expectations

Exactly the Brownell versus Monte discussion is apples and oranges. Clemson baseball has always been a force in the ACC and a known commodity nationally. Clemson basketball (with the exception of 1 year with Cliff Ellis and a couple with Rick Barnes and OP) has always been lucky to be a mid pack ACC team and never really a player on the national stage. If Brownell gets the basketball team to the tourney 2 out of 5 years he will keep his job. If baseball misses the tourney 2 years in a row, heads are going to roll. The big question in my mind though is did Monte take the fall for not wanting to fire See?

Why has our baseball program historically been much more successful than our basketball program? Well before brownell got here.

That's what many of us expected.
Neff realized, and that's why he made the change in baseball and not in basketball.
However, I think that sends a bad message to our fans and recruits that we don't want a better basketball program. IMO

He said he wants to have a very good basketball program, and acknowledged that the administration has to do a better job.
Neff’s comments show prospective players and coaches that Clemson isn’t just a football school, but also a school that wants a strong basketball program and supports it accordingly. That’s going to go a long way toward changing the current view of Clemson when it comes to basketball.

I started a thread stating that softball players tend to be of the larger variety and asked why.
May 31, 2022, 6:56 PM
|
|
I asked if that is because it confers an advantage in the sport, or if the nature of softball selects for bigger women. It was a simple question.
Several people incorrectly concluded that I was calling all softball players fat, so I immediately clarified that I was referring to both height and weight. I clarified this in multiple responses.
Some people said that I was calling our softball players fat. I clarified that I was not. Then I randomly picked another softball program (Mississippi State) and showed that their roster consists of women much larger than the average female height in the U.S. of 5’4.”
Some people said that I was calling all women fat. I clarified that I was not, but reminded them that according to the CDC most people in the U.S. (both men and women) are overweight. Roughly 66% of the population to be exact.
Evidently the thread was deleted by the mods. I never heard anything else about it until this thread, when some people who have a problem with me and overreacted to the thread brought it up again.
That’s all I have.

1. I didn't call anyone fat. 2. I'm not backpedaling. 3. I did ask why softball players are taller and heavier overall compared to most other female college athletes, as well as average 18-22 year-olds. 4. I asked because I wondered (and still wonder) if it confers an advantage when playing softball. Perhaps the nature of softball attracts women who are taller and/or heavier. I don't know, which is why I asked. 5. There was nothing tasteless about what I posted. I'm disappointed that the thread was removed, because it highlighted a bunch of ridiculous overreactions from some of you which were uncalled for.

You would not have mentioned conditioning until your original post if you were asking why they were tall. And again softball players are not as tall as basketball and volleyball.
You were just looking for some “clever” way to being attention to overweight softball players for some reason in the middle of our super regional.

No it’s definitely “taken”.
“Took” is a perfect past tense verb meaning it needs to be the main verb of the sentence. In your question the verb is “Was” the perfect past tense of “to be”, so you need a past participle of “take”, which would be “taken”.
So you could say:
They took the money and ran.
Or you could say:
The money was taken to the police.
Notice the use of “was”.
Now all that to be said, in southern dialects past perfect and participles are used interchangeably and I’m pretty sure everyone understood the meaning of your sentence. So I don’t think you were wrong. But if we are going to argue about meaningless rules, which I love to do, I’m going with “taken” as the correct verbiage.

Just curious...what are the disadvantages?
May 31, 2022, 4:24 PM

Brownell has some accomplishments (sweet 16, beating UNC @ Chapel Hill), but most importantly seems to run a clean program. He's kept us in the middle of the ACC which is probably a little higher than we've been historically.
I believe it is time for a fresh face, new blood; to me Clemson BB has become stale. I believe Neff has pretty much laid it out for Brad. If we don't make the tournament this year I believe Brad will be let go.

May 31, 2022, 4:35 PM
[ in reply to Just curious...what are the disadvantages? ] |
|
1. We have what many consider to be the worst men's basketball history in the ACC. 2. We spend less that most ACC programs on men's basketball. 3. We wait too long to upgrade facilities, and when we do upgrade them, we cut corners. 4. We have inconsistent fan support for men's basketball.
The most serious one, in my opinion, is #2. We need to spend more on our program, which allows us to hire high quality assistant coaches and then keep them when other teams try to hire them. That's been a big issue, which Neff is addressing.
We have good (but not great) facilities now, which is nice, but we have to maintain them.
Our poor program history is going to be used against us, so we have to make sure we overcome it in other areas such as having great facilities and spending more on the program.
NIL is obviously going to become more and more of a factor, so hopefully we won't fall behind in that. Doing NIL really well can help overcome some of the aforementioned issues.

5. We're not paying Brad a $3M buyout due to the contract extension he was given two months before Radakovich left Clemson. (Lee's buyout was $500K.) It doesn't mean he's off the hot seat. I'm sure there will be higher expectations for next season.

1. We have what many consider the worst men's basketball coach in the ACC. 2. We spend an obscene amount on a head coach's salary yet are consistently middling. 3. We wait too long to cut bait from an underperforming coach, yet we put ourselves there due to poorly structured buyouts meeting bad timing. 4. Our fan support is at its lowest level in decades due to allowing an overmatched coach to stick around too long and suck what energy and life we had for our basketball program down even further.
The most serious one, IMO, is #2. We need to invest more into the program and less into such an underperforming coach. He is using up way too many valuable resources that could best be applied elsewhere.
We just spent $65 Million five years ago on facility renovations that our Head Coach helped put together. They are good, not great.
Brad's lackluster coaching history and lack of NBA level player development over his twelve years here is being used against him, so we have to make sure that we overcome that in every other area imaginable except, you know, the head coach spot.
NIL presents Brad an opportunity to finally buy some decent players since he struggles so much in getting people to want to come here and play under him under normal circumstances. Hopefully Brad is out there now working up his many deep pocketed donor admirers. Considering how personable and outgoing he has been as coach with the student body and fan base over his decade plus tenure here, this should be a piece of cake.

we finish higher in the ACC than our program expenditures would suggest.
That, to me, is the mark of a good coach. He overachieves relative to the investment made by the administration.
There are numerous examples of players at all positions who have improved considerably while at Clemson. So the skill development is there.
Our players play really hard and never quit. He gets a lot of effort out of his players. They also represent our program well, behaving themselves and setting records for GPA and graduation rate.
Our issue isn't good coaching or development, it's getting more talented players to start with. Getting better players happens when we have better assistant coaches to help recruit, and better facilities to recruit to. Neff is already addressing both of these issues.

Brownell is not winning at Duke imo. Runs a clean program and represents the university very well, but he is average which is what we have been in basketball for as long as I have followed basketball. Reasons behind it, maybe but there is a reason Clemson basketball has grown stale with the fans. Low expectations have become the norm. Just like to be in the top 3-4 in the conference more than once in a 10 year span.
Basketball looking good for next year?

But no one on earth with half a brain would argue Brownell is a better coach than Monte Lee.

I don't agree that expectations for basketball are lower than for baseball. If you asked Neff if he would rather have a super successful basketball program or a super successful baseball program, guess what he would pick? Hint: he wouldn't pick baseball.
Thankfully, Neff understands that Clemson basketball has a lot more to overcome to be successful than Clemson baseball, and views the two situations differently.

ML was on the hot-seat last year and the "feelers" went out from Clemson to interested baseball coaches and there were several interests.
BB was on the hot-seat at the same time and there was no one interested in coaching basketball at Clemson.

If you think this is a vote of confidence for Brad, you are a fool. This is Neff warming himself up for replacing Brad in 2 years time.
I think you are right about one thing though, replacing Brad now is putting the cart before the horse. Basketball is the lowest hanging fruit in our athletics program and certainly not the first project Neff wants to take on. But after a year or two under his belt, the realization of the amount of money we are leaving on the court by not spending more on basketball will be like a sirens call that Neff won’t be able to avoid.

because I realize that Neff is mature enough and smart enough to know that the two situations are very different.
It just made me laugh that Neff firing Lee brought up so many raw emotions in some people here, and their butthurt about Neff not firing Brownell.

I’m not upset that Lee was fired. I’m upset that Brownell was not. What was the conversation like? “We’ll Monte, we suck more now than we use too, so you’re fired” as opposed to “Well Brad, since we suck the same here’s an extension.”
Seriously, how do you not hold every coach to the same standards?

Fact if Baseball is higher than basketball when it comes to expectations. Thats really the only reason Brad hasn’t been fired at this point.

The fact is that we’ve had more success in baseball than in basketball
May 31, 2022, 10:37 PM
[ in reply to Re: I'm LOLing so hard here. ] |
|
throughout our history, because baseball is a cheap sport and it’s popular in rural areas, while basketball requires more money and isn’t as popular in rural areas.
Clemson put all of its eggs in the football basket years ago, and decided that success in other sports would have to come with minimal investment.
Baseball saw success here because it’s typically easier to have success in smaller sports that don’t require as much money. Basketball has been much harder for us and our disadvantages, namely that we didn’t care enough to put sizable funds into it on a consistent basis.
If Brad has a good year next year, he won’t be fired.

I’m LOLing At your post so hard, if Brad Brownell was a good coach, we would all love him, and I’m certain he would have other job offers. The fact is most Clemson fans want him gone, and he’s had no job offers, And he was Clemson’s fifth choice anyway. That’s reality

If Brad is such a great coach according to you - as I posted in another thread - in the past 47 years and 7 coaches - why does he have a below average winning percentage and the only coach he has a better average than - is Larry Shyatt?
