Helmets are soft.

On the inside.

Can you specify exactly which helmet we are referring too?

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

You mean like the handle you use to TD the snot out of me? Look, you've done so for weeks; I know it and you know it. The ONLY reason you're able to get away with it is because for whatever reason the moderators here choose to not expose weird folks such as yourself who apparently think TDing people is something engaged in by emotionally mature adults.

The same way you've used your own usernames to give yourself a gazillion points is the same way you've hidden in anonymity to knock down my pulse early and often.

Yet again I ask - please get a grip. Using multiple usernames on a sports message board all day everyday is really strange, to say the least.

Hard or soft is up for debate, but they should definitely be

As a hi school senior in the fall of 1981 I tackled an opposing qb. His helmet was noticeably larger than his teammates. Under the pile I “poked” his helmet. It was a firm but soft foam colored the same as his teammates with the same logo on the side. Right there I thought, “this will be every helmet in 10 years”. I was wrong. The only other one I ever saw was a guy in the Buffalo Bills back in the 90s.

I'm going with Don Bebe (s?), a WR on that team IF I am remembering correctly.

They already use the “Guardian” helmet covers...

during thud practices to help minimize concussions

Wow, great stuff. Yes, I'm definitely talking about the outside of the helmet. don't know why someone would think I'm talking about the inside. I never understood why they were so hard on the outside, since they cause injury to others so easily.

A lot of headwind on that one. There’s a whole segment of the drug industry that tries to insure the opposite is true.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My point for the last 10 years has been the same:

Apr 13, 2021, 11:46 AM

The crown of the helmet (which is what causes most instantaneous concussions on the football field) should be padded. It's so simple.

If safety was really the #1 concern of the NFL, this would have been done years ago.

This would also address the slow concussions that lineman suffer over the course of games, seasons and careers.

When they finally figure out how to accurately diagnose CTE as it develops in living players before symptoms begin, the sport of American football may reach a turning point as parents will have more information at their disposal.

It's a complete joke that NFL owners have forced a 17th game down the throats of the players. They've been trying for a long time. 18 is their ultimate goal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One more thing

Apr 13, 2021, 11:50 AM

The crown of the helmet that actually inflicts serious damage is tiny. It's not nearly as big as those silly looking sponges players wear for spring practice.

Do Away With Helmets

Apr 13, 2021, 12:51 PM

Do away with helmets altogether. That would eliminate most head injuries. Not that I think it will ever happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are you drugs?

Apr 13, 2021, 4:14 PM

You actually think a sport with legal, deliberate, high-speed collisions like American football would be safer without a helmet?

That's insane. I suppose you also think ice hockey would be safer also. LOL!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Are you drugs?

Apr 13, 2021, 5:42 PM

It's obviously not safer in hockey, but they did play without helmets.

Re: "Helmets shouldn't be hard, they should be soft"

Apr 13, 2021, 5:52 PM

Think I know what you are getting at ...

If they were soft then too much friction and massive neck injuries will occur.

I have said for years that the problems with today’s helmets that they are so safe (which builds defender or blocker confidence) that they have become a weapon.

(In jest) Go back to the rope suspension helmets that hurt like crap when you hit someone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are totally correct about the problem

Apr 13, 2021, 8:33 PM

When helmets became weapons, that's when brain risk went to another level. The original intent was for them to be protective.

The problem is now helmets are far better weapons than they are protectors. The NFL's focus has been increasing the protective aspect. This is backwards.

What they should do is de-weaponize them. That would almost completely solve the problem. This seems so obvious to me.
