Why Did Venables Get Upset with Ben?

That hit Ben Boulware made on the 250 QB running the ball looked perfectly legal to me. I wonder if Brent was chewing him out for the hit or something else?

It looked like he was explaining that Ben should have tackled him rather than just hit him.

I agree, if the QB was a little shiftier he would have gone by Bouleware. He went for the big hit with a bad angle, but either way it was still a great hit and we got the fumble.

Looked like BB just overran it , and had to do what he had to do to make contact . I didn't think it was targeting , but from a bang-bang perspective I could see why the flag was initially thrown . BV was probably mad at some assignment being missed that maybe BB was supposed to have called out or something , just a guess of course.

I think if Coach Venables takes a look at the video, he won't think it was such a bad thing. Ben pushed the big QB hard and it looked violent, but as the video showed, it was a good, clean hit to his shoulder pad. Ben is one strong dude. The defense always catches hell even though a runner can do about anything.

Because Boulware could have cost his team with that hit

If the targeting penalty had stood, he would have been ejected and that would have hurt our D. Not sure it would have mattered in this game, but we definitely can't afford that against FSU or the ACCCG. Even then, it was a pretty clean hit and I hope he lays the FSU QB out like that too.

Just my opinion, while it was a legitimate hit, from one angle it looked like Ben threw an elbow at his chest. It was not targeting,as was initially reported, just a clean hard hit. Brent was probably chewing him out because if the targeting penalty had been up held,Ben would have missed the second half.

I'm pretty sure he was telling Ben not to

Talk to the refs. Ben was trying to state his case to one of the refs, which is a no-no

he was just glad he'd have his "qb" for the 1st half next week.
now on the call: BC should have retained possession of the ball plus the 15 yards. it's bull, but that is the rules. it makes no sense why the 15 yd penalty stands regardless even if the hit is deemed legal. the way it worked out is the way it should have but not how the rules are written. that's why addazio was so pissed

The chsnged that rule. Flag can be picked up by the booth if they rule no targeting

However they can also call something like unnecessary roughness WITH targeting and only the targeting portion can get overturned in that case.

BB would have been back next week even if the call had been upheld. It was during the first half, meaning he would just miss the second half of this game.

^^^ If I understand how targeting works, then Ben would have been available for the entire game next week. There was 21 seconds left in the 1st half, so Ben would have had to sit out those 21 seconds and the entire 2nd half.
Please feel free to correct me.

Well, yeah, it's always nice to make a perfect form tackle, but when a 250 lb. QB is running at you, it doesn't always work that way. I mean runners can initiate head to head contact, stiff arm to head and all matter of things and that's okay. Give the defensive guys a doggone break. That hit showed me Ben in one strong son of a gun the way he demolished that big guy. Didn't even have to use the choke hold. I wonder if they'll say he plays too rough again this week.
