Have we missed something about Coach V this season???

As I was thinking about what he has accomplished that has won us the games we've won and kept us in the games we lost, I am curious how he continues week after week to grow this group, develop and respond. If "iron sharpens iron", where is he getting the iron from? Seems like all the work his group gets is against a predictable scheme, that is currently not firing on Oline, QB or receiver. Yet, even with the injuries to the D, he week in and week out grows this unit up. Even more impressive when you think he has to manufacture the challenge for that squad as they can't be stretched in practice by our O this year.

Well, take it this way...
The previous two seasons, the offense was carrying the defensive unit. It was the complete inverse as of the current year.
It flows in cycles. That is fine. Sometimes you have to hang your hat on defense, sometimes offense.
Great coaches are not always having NC level success but great coaches will constantly get back to that level.
My take is that with BV and his staff and the kids he brings in, it is always "on". There is no need to manufacture a challenge. Everything is a challenge. They might not always be the best but they will give the best.

Give BV the bare bones of talent, and he has proven that he can make it better than it was expected. He develops guys through the science of X's & O's of development. BV is a professor, and a teacher of defensive FB!!!

You can look at the defensive rosters for the last several years of key players and you will always find players who became very successful playing for coach V. Look no further than Skalski. He has become the heart and soul of this defense. We need a couple of number 47s on offense!

I believe that was after they pulled Bresee and Murphy in practice because they are “unstoppable.”

longevity in his specialty: defense.
Longevity by his own design, being satisfied in that role and refining his specialty in that side of the ball.
When I realized early on how long he had been at Oklahoma, I doubted he had overriding ambitions for a HC role...something I still doubt.

Throughout the spring and into fall camp the defense was loaded on the 2-deep and even 3-deep at some positions.
Everybody wants to get on the field so they know they have to bring it every day in practice to earn what they want.
Even with the injuries thinning the depth, it seems as though maybe the defensive culture was set early and the group still has a drive to be prepared and earn time on the field.
Very much in contrast to the offense (and I'm not even talking about QB) where it seems the WRs and TEs at the top of the depth chart are/were content with sharing time and knowing that there isn't anyone better to replace them.
The RBs at the top of the chart began bailing after the spring and several more have chosen to depart rather than fight for what they believe should be theirs.
In terms of OL, the talent is less and so I'm not so sure that it's a motivation problem as much as it's a problem of either not being great in general or not being great at/not knowing the position in which they have been placed.

Experienced players at key positions.
Exactly what the offense doesn't have.
