Have any of You ever met Coach Dabo..

Jan 6, 2022, 11:33 AM

and if so when, where..and what were your personal thoughts of him.

I’ve not.

Said hello to Coach Ford in 1982..

and hi-fived President Jim Clements in 2019 as he came out of elevator onto the concessions concourse after a game and I pointed at his Orange pants & gave the perfect??sign.

Oh, as you know I interviewed & wrote article on Coach Howard in 1961 as a married student & sports writer for The TiGER and spoke with him for 15 minutes in 1989 after Spring game.

Met Coach Howard in Jervey as a student working there.....

Jan 6, 2022, 11:46 AM

he was awesome to talk to. He would have kept talking if I didn't have to get back to my job. Definitely a highlight of my time there. Met Danny a couple of times there and in Anderson at a restaurant. Very nice, not as talkative, but still an awesome experience. Met Hatfield....nice guy. Never met Tommy( either one). Met Dabo signing autographs for the kids after a spring game......he was awesome as well. He actually stayed for photographs longer than he should when they were trying to whisk him away. It meant to world to my son (and me!!!).

I have on several occasions. It was several years ago when Will was playing travel baseball and Dabo was one of the coaches. I umpired several of their games and would talk to him in his official capacity as a baseball coach. I have seen him several other times when I have been officiating other sports that his sons were participating in. I did not approach him then because it would look unprofessional on my part and also interrupt his time of just being a dad.

When I did talk to him when he was coaching and I was officiating, I thought that he was very nice and pleasant.

Yes I did. Can’t remember the year but it was in an office at Jervey with other supporters. Main discussion then was which quarterback he was going with. My how things never change. He was as pleasant and upbeat then as he is now.

No, but I did meet Coach Howard and Coach Ford. I hope to meet coach Dabo someday. Coach Howard and Ford were naturals and so is Dabo. All 3 raised in Alabama. Our Alabama connection has served us well. Therefore, I will have to go for Alabama in the big game.

Jan 6, 2022, 11:51 AM

Yes but not the "Coach" Dabo - yet. Him and the fam were at the Patio/Fureplace store just outside of Seneca. I want to say it was summer of 2008 (he was an assistant) - heck it could have been 2007 as we postponed our wedding date a year. The FutureMrsFutureDoc and I were going some registry/or post wedding shopping, they were there as a fam, and she started talking to them somehow. I was trying to get help get something loaded but was able to say hi, etc. Nothing big.

Later when Dabo was named interim, she did not place the name. I told her that was the coach/family she talked to and she said "oh, they made a good pick".

Yup...a few different times...

I also met Danny Ford in the mid 80's. I was working security at a location where the team was staying he was polite but not overly talkative. He did give me a couple of dollars and ask me to get him a pack of cigarettes so I did.

I also met Fred Hoover during this time. He was a very nice man and would introduce me to players. I hung out a bit with him, Raymond Chavous, and Donnell Woolford during Woolford freshman hear. I remember when Hoover introduced me to Woolford he said "this guy is going to be a good one". He was right.

As a member of the media I’ve had the honor to interview him multiple times (7 I believe) and as an upper level donor I’ve had the opportunity to have a few chats with him. Nothing serious or more than a few moments each time. Those talks were often not about football. We share two mutual friends and one of his in-laws is also related to my wife’s side of the family. I can tell you he’s more complex than people think. A devout Christian who makes all decisions based on his faith. But as a result, super adamant and resolved about his decisions. Some people take that as arrogant. But it’s not. It’s confidence. In my open letter to Dabo - which of course I would never actually send to him (it was just to get people taking in here) - I mentioned that now was the time to keep his end of the promise “best is the standard.” I’ve spoken to him since posting that, and no of course he never read that letter…. But I can tell you he is determined to keep us on top. I doubt we will see all the improvements in 2022 others are expecting, but we will see growth in the areas that will set us up to climb the mountain. I may not be a “friend” of his, but anyone who has spent time with him knows he’s a man who loves to make good on his promises. I completely expect him to do that. If not, it won’t be because of his lack of commitment.

Jan 6, 2022, 12:03 PM

Love Dabo. But regarding the "confidence" in his decision making, some could construe as "stubborn" especially with on-the-field decisions. In contrast, go back to Saban's decision vs UGA in semis several years ago where he pulled Hurts to put in Tua, which ultimately won the game for them. Not sure if Dabo would have made that move. Not a criticism, just an observation that he is more of a "stay the course" type of guy.

You mean like benching a returning starter senior from a playoff team to play a true freshman in the 5th game of the season because he knew that getting the freshman ready was the only way to win a championship that year?

Doubt Dabo would ever make a bold move like that.

He's exactly as you described no matter what the setting. And yes, he's made good on a couple promises. He's a tough "old school" man of God and his word. He's also very concerned with what's happening in football now.

I have also said hello to Coach Ford, quite recently .I played a round of golf( captain's choice) with Doug Kingsmore( baseball stadium) met Jack Leggett, Brad Brownell, sat next to Brad Scott at a basketball game several years back, spoke with Tajh Boyd, and the impressions are all the same; These guys represent Clemson well.

Nothing more than a high five after a game with Dabo. Did get to meet BV when my daughter was the Tiger Cub mascot. BV was all smiles and just as nice as he could be. I think it was before the SC game in 2014. Met Coach Ford at his tailgate. I swear he has the biggest hand I have shook. Had the pleasure of talking with Tajh several times. He is a great young man.

Jan 6, 2022, 12:30 PM

and he seems like a very genuine guy. A couple of Dabo's fraternity brothers (yes, he was in a fraternity) were high school classmates of a good friend of mine. I don't know the guys personally, but they made for a good conversation starter.

I actually have met most of the coaches, although I doubt any of them would remember it. I am no deep pockets donor; just in the right place at the right time. Even have met Danny Ford and Fred Cone a few times. FWIW Bill Spiers was one of my brother's high school classmates, and his brother Michael was one of mine.

Still hasn't ever gotten me into the football ops building, though.

Met Coach Swinney twice at the Charleston Prowl & Growl. Once in 2019 and the other in 2020. "Met" is probably not the best word. I stood in line and took pictures with him. Shook his hand both times and he was as generous as you could imagine. Same huge smile in both pictures.

In the 2020 picture I asked if he would throw up the "6" hand sign with me for the 6th straight win over South Carolina, but he graciously declined.

After his 2nd Natty to get him to sign a limited edition Championship football and he was very responsive to every fan- people in front of me brought him a dozen Krispy Kremes and he went wild.

As a student in the’60s we could stand right behind the coaches during football practice- quite an experience being that close to Frank Howard and hearing every word he had to say

I saw Dabo Swinney at a grocery store in Clemson yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a ###### and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I've never met a Clemson head football coach.

I did meet Jeff Scott when he was in high school. He was playing in the SCISA football all star game and my dad was helping to host the event and was having a conversation with him prior to the game.

My dad asked him if he knew where he was going to college the following year. He told my dad that nobody really knew yet but that it would be announced in the coming days that his dad was taking a job at Clemson and that he was going to school there and planned to walk on to the football team.

I have talked with Jack Leggett a number of times because I am pretty close with several of his former players. He always makes a point to include me in the conversation even though he is much more interested in catching up with his former players when I typically see him.

I have talked to Monte Lee some as well. His mind is almost always on baseball so there isn't much meaningful conversation other than that.

Tried to edit that last post. I’m a first time caller long time listener. Anyway, wanted to add a gross and funny story about it. Either before or after I met him, we happened to both be in the bathroom together at the urinals. Afterwards, neither one of us washed our hands. Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Have any of You ever met Coach Dabo..

Jan 6, 2022, 2:32 PM

Reminds me of a story about a UNC and NC State graduate standing next to each other at the urinals and the State grad started to leave without washing his hands. The UNC guy said, “ They taught us to walk our hands after going to the bathroom at Carolina “. The State guy said, “ They taught us not to pee on our hands
at State”.

I met Dabo aT a Tiger Growal in the Raleigh area. I had been recognized as the oldest graduate in attendance , former cadet. Korean veteran. Etc. He was very gracious, thanked me for my service, and we had a picture taken with his arm around my wife. My son and I talked with Coach Caldwell for at least a half hour. He is really nice and very funny..

I also met Coach Howard several times. I think I have written about sitting with him on a flight from Raleigh to DC. We had a great conversation. He thanked me for introducing my self and telling him my name. He said, “ Yould be surprised at how many people come up to me and say ‘ hey Coach, do you remember me’ and I want to say, He** no, why
should I “. Another time when we were working in DC and visited my family in Seneca, my wife and I along with our two little kids sat with him on a flight from Greenville to DC. He held our little boy on his lap and recruited him at age two. Coach was going to speak at the DC area Clemson Club. My wife and I attended. During his comments he recounted our trip together and talked about the fine youth mother Cynthia was and then said, and now I see her sitting over there drinking a martini. He was a down to earth fellow and very easy to talk to.

At the Tiger Growal I mentioned above, when I was recognized a lady came rushing out of the crowd and gave me a big hug and told me that she was Frank Howard’s daughter. She lives in Rocky Mount, NC.

Yes ...

Jan 6, 2022, 1:31 PM

... I've met Dabo at a couple of Prowl & Growl events, but the first one in Marietta, GA is most memorable.

It was at Dave & Busters and I was working downtown so I left early to get to the event on time with all the traffic. For some reason, traffic was light and I arrived way too early and followed a big white car into the parking lot. I believe he had been to a golf event earlier.

Dabo stepped out of the car as I was walking up and we started talking ... he said, "I wonder if there's somewhere to store my golf clubs in there ..." I said, "Perhaps, but you're welcome to put them in my SUV if you want." .. and he said "Sure, let's do that!"

So, for most of the event, I had Dabo's golf clubs in my car and toward the end of the event Don Munson came up to me and called me by name and said one of the grad assistants was going to get Dabo's clubs. That wasn't a problem at all and the grad assistant put Dabo's clubs in his car.

I went back in for the last few minutes of the event, but what I took away from it were these things... Dabo is genuine, down to earth, very pleasant and easy to talk to. What you see on TV and in videos is what you get in person. When he's talking to you, he's engaged in the conversation .. not looking around to see who else is around.

And the last thing is ... either he's got a great memory because he remembered my name, or those golf clubs were so important to him that he HAD to remember it! :D

I wouldn't trade Dabo for ANY other coach in the country. The way he is representing Clemson and growing up the players is special indeed.

GO TIGERS!!

Met Coach Howard several times. I would go to the games with my football coach who played for him. We would go by his office before the games. Met Ford several times and met Hatfield when my cousin played for him. Met Bowden at Iptay County Meetings and the same with Dabo. All were very nice and down to earth.

Coach Howard was a funny and genuine man also. He would come up so close to you that you could smell his chewing tobacco. My coach always brought him some when we visited.

All the coaches I met represented Clemson well. They were and are what makes Clemson so grate.

I have met him several times at the Ladies'Clinic that he sponsors. He actually takes the time to have his picture made with everyone there. Obviously, it was not a long conversation, considering there are several thousand ladies there, but I think it is unbelievable that he takes the time to do this. Additionally, all the other coaches are there and available for pictures and autographs, as well.

Yes, at the ladies clinic. My Grandfather was a Clemson man and started the tradition for us and we made shirts in his honor to wear at the clinic. He spoke about our shirts and wanted to hear all about my Grandfather. He was very personable and was very genuine. It's easy to see why so many parents want their kids to play for Dabo.

October 10 2008, the day after Clemson lost to Wake Forest

Jan 6, 2022, 3:29 PM

on a Thursday night... I was at a South Point vs Ashbrook High School football game with my friend. On the sideline stood Dabo and Billy Napier scouting a Wide Receiver(Jehrani Boyd who chose UNC I believe).

I told my friend "That guy down there is going to be Clemson's next head coach." My friend did not know who Dabo Swinney was and thought I was full of crap. He suggested we hang around after the game near the visitor gate and say hello, so we did.

Billy Napier took off for the car after a quick hello but Dabo stood and talked to us for about 5-10 minutes. Probably the last time he could have a chat with a couple fans at a football game without being surrounded.

I mentioned that he could be the Head Coach soon and he said "Nah. Don't think so. We'll see." Bowden was technically still the coach but it was widely speculated that he was out after the Wake loss.

Dabo was very nice and very accommodating. He radiated enthusiasm and happiness during that conversation.

I have said hello to him a time or two since but that was the only time I ever got to talk with him. I wish I could remember more about what we said. Oh well.

at Sobis. He was our wr coach and had recently taken over our recruiting camps and as luck would have it, he had gotten seated at our table.

My impression was that he talked non-stop but in a good way. He was someone that you felt like you had known a long time even though you just met him. Also, he had ALOT of stories, almost all related to football and he was really interesting and funny.

Re: Have any of You ever met Coach Dabo..

I have not had the pleasure of meeting Dabo personally but I've met many of the coaches that have made a significant mark on Clemson. While I was a student Coach Banks McFadden was in charge of intramural sports and I met him on several occasions in a student/coach situation. At the time I knew he was a famous athlete, but it did not sink in until much later how much of a legend he was. Frank Howard was the Head Coach/AD at the time. During this period, I was in the same room with him several times where I could hear all of his stories and jokes. The one time I was one on one with Coach Howard was right after Danny Ford was appointed head coach and we spoke about Danny's future which Coach Howard thought would be great for Clemson.

About 8 years ago, my oldest son got the chance to fill in for Dabo's travel baseball team, The Clemson Crush. He played with Will and Jake, although they were a year younger. Coach Swinney and Mrs. Kathleen were great to my son and our family. As for Coach Swinney, I found him to be genuine, an excellent teacher, and driven for success. As Clemson fans, it was an awesome experience for us all. My son did quiet well and earned a game ball/signed helmet from Coach. Either way, he's the real deal.
