Has Basketball Recruiting Improved Since Facility Upgrades?

It's crazy to see the direct impact that funding our basketball program competitively has had when it comes to recruiting
2010 - 2016 Recruiting: Our average recruiting ranking in these 7 years was 102 (73 if you don't include Brownell's 1st class which was ranked 280)
2017 - 2023 Recruiting: Our average recruiting ranking in these 7 years is 50. This also includes last year's class that was ranked 97. We only had 1 recruit, but we also signed a fantastic transfer class that included 2 starters from other NCAA tourney teams, and an all conference player from a conference that a lot on here were clamoring was better than the ACC last year. This also doesn't include the 2024 class where we signed our 4th highest recruit ever and are currently ranked 22. We are still in it and listed as the favorite for Austin Swartz too!
Your head is in the sand if you don't think this program has improved, or are denying that our program currently has momentum!

…to improve to 50th average? I know patience is a virtue, but even assuming this trend will be linear (unlikely), that just isn’t good enough. I’ve waited since the 70s for some consistent excellence from this program.

I thought basketball was underfunded which has been the basis for you and others reason for brad’s lack of success?
Now you’re making an argument that basketball funding has directly lead to improvement in the program?
Which is it?

Yes. Being underfunded definitely has been an issue as to why our program has never had consistent success. Clemson now has competitive facilities and funding and it has definitely paid off. Dont get me wrong, we are atill not close to the bluebloods, but we are definitwly more competitive
Since the facility upgrades we have had one of the best 6 year spans in program history, and we are still on the upswing.
Also again the 50 rankings takes into account our 1 player class this year, but we also pulled in our best portal class which is not included in the ratings.

my wife yells at me when i dont take the trash all the way to the bin.
so last week i started taking the trash out but saw some weeds in my yard. I put the bag down in the driveway and started pulling weeds. Then i forgot about it. She backed into the bag and instantly jumped out of her car, ran inside, and started yelling at me.
I said.. come on.. before i didnt take it out. Now i made it half way. If you can't see the improvement then your head is in the sand.
how do you think the rest went?

Mountaineer why do you grasp at anything to defend Brownell. Nobody on here dislikes Brownell. He’s an average coach nothing more. I hate it but one of his better teams lost in the first round on their home court. Good coaches don’t get beat by Morehead St. If we want someone that runs a clean program but will never win anything we have our guy. I believe some have higher expectations than that and it sounds like more funding is in the works. 50th in recruiting is embarrassing for an ACC school which was once known as the premier basketball conference. Do I like Brownell, yes and would play a round of golf with him on any given day, but do I have confidence that he can win the ACC or take us deep in the NCAA’s no. Normally we are all worried if we can or will make it in.

There are a lot on here that dislike Brownell.
You don't have a ###### clue on my opinion of Brownell other than I don't think he should be fired right now.

You have the ability to know what others think of CBB, but no one has the ability to know what you think of him? Kind of like a super power?

The facilities have improved a lot and the recruiting has improved considerably. It's exciting to be in the top 5s of some very good recruits--Dallas Thomas is a great get, and if we land Austin Swartz this will probably be the best recruiting class in recent history. That being said, the program seems to be pointed in the right direction and on the right trajectory, but it's hard to not see a little bit of the luster rubbed off when you remember that Brownell is the one coaching the talent coming in. I think we can all admit the program as a whole seems to be pointed in the right direction, but we all can agree to disagree as to whether or not the right person is actually leading the program.

I think Brownell is an above average coach. His issue has been recruiting, but that has gotten much better over the last 6 years.

Brownell NEEDS a good assistant to coach the players so he can be a CEO. Something? Go Tiger BB!

I'm glad to hear that the facility upgrades helped. Now if we can just turn the improved recruiting into NCAA tournament (or NIT for that matter) wins, I will consider the money well spent. Go Tigers!!!

Yes, recruiting has definitely improved. But funny how in Brownell's early years with terrible facilities that made it impossible for him to succeed, the previous coach made 3 straight tourneys immediately before Brownell arrived. Brownell has yet to make it even twice out of any 3 year span in his 13 year tenure, and he still can't achieve that next year either. So imagine how good we could be with better facilities/recruiting AND a better coach.

Facilities and support didnt make it impossible for brownell to succeed to start, but it certainly didnt help.
What made it hard for brownell to succeed to start was an enormous talent dropoff in year 2 from rhe Purnell leftovers, him not having a recruiting class in his first year due to the timing if the OP departure, and him missing on most players in his first recruiting class in his second year. Bernard sullivan was very highly rated and was a bust. KJ and Rod Hall were the only 2 players he hit on.

It really is. Rarely does a coach ever get to have every possible need addressed over 13 years - and still prove, beyond any doubt, that he is simply a terrible coach.

The worst coach in the ACC to serve more than 8 seasons in the 64 team era.

Cool story bro.
Now how about they win some games?
Because if the recruiting has improved, it has to be the coaching, right?
