Remember to give thanks to Eostre, goddess of spring, for the eggs and bunnies and candy, and for keeping our crops and womenfolk fertile.

Just sayin'.. literally everything about Easter that isn't specifically related to the resurrection of Christ is rooted in paganism.
The timing of the holiday (though it can also be argued the date was chosen to coincide and compete with Passover), the name, the pastel colors, the eggs and rabbits, etc..

Yeah, what's up with that? Guess it ain't easy being the new god on the block. "Borrowing" traditions from other already-popular religions would help with recruiting, I reckon.

Yes, that's why there was something called the "Reformation"

You're five hundred years late.
Yes, there are many people that don't understand the apostasy of much of the traditions they celebrate today and that have crept back into their faith decade by decade, but my family and many others don't celebrate "Easter," we celebrate the day Jesus the Christ, the only begotten Son of God, rose from the dead two days after being crucified on the Hebrew Passover, conquering the "sting" of death for all who call on His name.
And yes, it is a shame that the excuse of "it's for the children" has bastardized the holiday (and many others) for so many children and adults, but one day you'll understand, and regret, that your sophomoric mocking of what you have chosen not to understand or accept is even worse than their ignorance.
"Half-truths" are just as deadly as lies.

Why is it that people that don’t believe feel it necessary

to antagonize others? Is it really necessary? Most people realize all religions borrowed from previous ones.

Ok, I googled Kaaba. It's the black cube thing in Mecca. I did know what it was, kinda, but not what it was called. BTW I'm not a big fan of modern Islam, in case you were wondering.. definitely not the kind they practice in Saudi Arabia (Wahhabism).

Way to be a contrarian

[ in reply to Re: Whatever floats your boat ] |

Nice try.
Easter is about the resurrection of Christ, who is the son of God. It's not a made-up, it actually happened and it's been continually proven as fact over the millenia by historical texts from the Mideast region that corroborate the Bible's timeframe of the events that transpired.
You're not the first person to claim that the true meaning of the Easter has been conflated with bunnies, Easter Egee hunts, etc....
None of that changes the fact that Christians celebrate the ressuruecttion of Jesus on Easter.

Well, actually, that is not entirely true. Early Christians had a bad habit of timing their holidays to go along with existing pagan holidays. And that is why Easter and Christmas both have pagan beginnings. The OP is exactly correct.

That is not true either

Constantine is responsible for the Christian/Pagan holiday parallels. Once Constantine became a "believer", he [ordered] his army baptised - whether they were believers or not - and, he had all of the pagan priests convert to Christian priests. He made those priests convert...and they found ways to flood Christian teachings with pagan teachings. We still live with the results of that ridiculous move on his part today.

And yet that probably goes a long way in answering JHop's question regarding why Christianity became so popular.

How did it get to that point? Christianity spread through the Roman Empire where pagan religions and Judaism were firmly entrenched even though it’s followers were getting fed to lions and burnt at the stake.
Imagine the US government ordering all followers of a small cult to be thrown in prison and put on death row and it still spreading throughout the country overtaking Christianity....
You’d say that would never happen.

It wasn’t chosen to “compete” with Passover

Jesus went to Jerusalem over Passover and was crucified. It wasn’t a made up time at all.
But I guess God did actually choose the timing

Why do people feel the need to proselytize on a sports bored? If only there was a forum specifically designed for poasts relating to religion, and maybe politics too..

It’s become the cool thing to get offended by people who practice their religion

I guess it’s become as American as apple pie to be offended by things, so why not be offended by Christians celebrating with each other. It would be nice to live in a country where there was a fundamental right to practice one’s religion.

Yeah, but we have a forum for the religious stuff. People poast on the Tiger Bored anyway cuz they know they'll get more clicks/TUs there.
Where do you live? Plenty of religious freedom here in the US of A, unless you think you have a right to proselytize without anyone being annoyed by it.

You’ve got to wonder how Christianity won out over all those pagan religions and arose out of Judaism which had been established for a couple millennium despite tremendous persecution against it....

Which part was incorrect? Celebrate Easter if you want, but it's silly to deny that it borrows heavily from paganism. Respect my religious freedom, dude. I'm glad you liked the pig, though.
