Growing up I HATED BOBBY BOWDEN

Jan 6, 2022, 7:22 PM

But it was just because we could never beat him and his fsu teams were so #### good....as I got older and learned about the man he was, and started to appreciate his accomplishments....the hate turned to admiration.

I think in the future a lot of people that hate Dabo right now will grow to admire him as a man and football legend the same way I did with Coach Bowden....people always hate the best simply for being the best....

Dabo and Coach Bowden are very similar.....

I'm just glad I'm on the winning side of Dabos greatness instead of the losing side like I was with Coach Bowden

R.i.p to Bobby B

Most don't take time to find out who Dabo is. They only see him on the sidelines, running up and down, waving his arms, and shouting. They don't know the man. It's a hatred based on ignorance. We here on Tigernet have watched him for well over a decade and know who he is and Who he represents and therefore come away with a much more accurate picture. Hope he stays with us for another 15 years. And by the way.....GoooooooooooTigers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was ambivalent about Bobby Bowden…

until 1988. After that game, I really resented him for the rooskie crap. I was in school then and that year should have been THE year. I still hate Deon, because if it weren’t for his punt return, good chance the rooskie never happens and we win decisively. An undefeated, top 3 team ain’t gonna lose that close game in Raleigh. That year should have been another championship season in Clemson.

So many times it happens that teams just miss because of a play or two. Had the Auburn runner gotten just one more yard against 'Bammer a few weeks ago the final game would be Georgia against some other team. Sometimes teams miss undefeated seasons by a few points or a few yards. Life.

What made Puntrooskie such a great call by Bowden is that it worked, and that it worked even better than he dreamed it might. Had it not worked, it would have gone down as one of the worst coaching decisions ever made. Clemson would have gotten the ball back already in field goal range, ran the clock down, and sent Gardocki in for the win as time expired. And everyone in the stadium knew the punt would give Clemson the ball back with good field position and that we were going to move it into field goal range for the win, that is, everyone in the stadium with the exception of Bowden.

We were at the Puntrooskie game, sitting in the south lower stands section G. The Valley was rocking! Nationally televised, # 10 FSU vs # 3 Clemson, score tied 21 - 21, 4th Quarter. On 3rd down the ball got tipped and was nearly intercepted by Clemson. 4th down, 1:33 left in the game, the ball was on FSU's 20 yard line and they had no time outs left. FSU got in punt formation. From our vantage point it appeared the ball was snapped over the punter's head, as he jumped in the air to make it appear so. We were going nuts thinking we would have the ball in field goal range with a potential game winning kick. Next thing we see is Leroy Butler for FSU sprinting down the sideline being chased by two Clemson players. Donnell Woolford had the angle and was able to knock Butler out of bounds on the 1-yard line. Defense stuffs 1st down run for a 2-yard loss, 2nd down FSU scores a touchdown however the 25 second clock was expiring and FSU tried to call a time out with no more left. There was controversy as the game clock should not have stopped, the clock was not restarted when the officials realized the Noles had no time outs, and supposedly a penalty resulted, however was never marked off. The TD was nullified and FSU was forced to kick the winning field goal on 2nd down, as Bowden didn't want to take the chance of the game clock expiring. We drove back to Charleston after the game and it was the longest, quietest car ride I've ever taken. I have been a fan of all sports my whole life and that still ranks as the worse feeling after my team lost any game. Before that game, I had no issues with FSU. After that loss, I came to carry distain for the Noles that still holds to this day. Each of our wins over them since 1988 have come with great sweetness. I respect Bowden for the gutsy call he made, but I hope to enjoy many more Clemson wins over FSU before the bitterness of that game leaves me.

The worst thing about roozski was we all saw it coming…they HAD to fake it or at best tie…Bobby wasn’t playing to tie.

his coaching acumen.

“Fumble Rooski” ranks among the greatest coaching calls in the history of college football.

Coach Bowden was a great Christian man. However, a lot of his success not all of it, can be attributed to FSU being independent for many years and not having to follow conference rules in academic admission of football athletes. Great athletes who academically could not get in conference schools flocked to Florida State. As a result FSU became a power house. When they joined the ACC they dominated for a while but then after having to adhere to conference academic rules in recruiting other teams began to catch up with them. Similarly, the new Nil rules will allow those teams willing to put up millions to become power houses and dominate the others. When the playing field is not level whether then academics or now pay for play the wins these teams amass should have an asterisk by it. This will allow future generations to know the playing field was not level for those victories. Go back to Duke and NC basketball dominance and you find the same thing. Duke and NC rich booster spent a lot of money buying teams to dominate. My friend, this world is not always fair. Thank God for present Clemson U.

Well said. Fans of opposing teams generally have a strong distaste to the coach of the dominant team. They tend to accuse them of all sorts of nefarious activity.

Folks hate Coach K. Folks hate Saban. Folks are gonna hate Dabo.

They assume the worst about any successful coach (unless he is their coach).

Bobby's sense of humor and his support of his players were misinterpreted as being soft and lacking discipline. (I've heard the same about Dabo.) Nothing could be further from the truth. Just like Dabo, Bobby didn't just talk the talk, he walked the walk.

I didn't hate Bowden, but I certainly didn't like him after the puntrooskie. Most of us grew to respect and appreciate him years later.
