And has it 90% completed.
The missing piece is some work we wanted to sub out. We don't do it in-house really, but we could. Instead, we wanted to use a DBE. It is not a requirement, but it helps out the little guy. DBE has had a month to get me a scope and fee.
The project budget is just north of $400k, kinda small, nothing crazy. I had a $10k placeholder for the DBE's work. They call yesterday and provide their fee, no scope, of....$330,000. I laughed at the guy who they called, thinking he was joking. Nah, they apologized for the high fee but they were actually farming the work out to someone else, then adding their markup, then we would add a 5% markup on top of that.
Greenr had to call the client to tell them it might be another minute or two to get everything wrapped up, the sub-consultant fee was too outrageous to even tell them. That almost doubled the project cost for something that I could probably handle myself, and they weren't doing any work, just hiring someone else to do it. I gotta get me one of these SBE/DBE things.
Greenr is not happy, nobody is happy.

No, we are publicly traded, I assume it goes to shareholders.

When you google Biggest Engineering Companies in the US, we are one of the ones listed. I THINK they know what they are doing.

they're getting an extra 1 - 3% per deal not paying sales guys and having PMs do all the work lol...I wasn't questioning them man
.......but what're you doing?
I have buddies in sales for big GC firms. they have to manage their projects all the way through to hit margin objectives, which is a factor in their pay. but they still have PMs, site managers, etc. As do we, but like you said, different industries.
As big of jobs as you guys work on (assuming I'm close to target here) it's baffling that all that onus is on a PM. Even the big consulting shops I came from had engagement directors / partners responsible for sales targets. then PMs, analysts etc. down the line. all publicly traded.

I don't care how the sausage is made on a $2B project, even a $10M project

because those are not what I am managing. We have client relations managers and people higher up than the PMs that work with clients to get the work, etc. Alot of those are DB pursuits as well, so we are teaming with a GC to get that work. We do not do construction, only consulting.
But when it comes to the projects that I typically manage, I am writing or assisting with writing the scopes and developing the fees.
Put in three last month that probably were not over $200k total.
On the bigger projects, if necessary, I will be a task lead and only manage those specific tasks/portions of the project that are in my wheelhouse.
