Ouch, but true. And an even better chance to be a part of the final 4. Hey, kudos to the kid for at least wanting to try. I can't blame him, stay in Clemson as long as you can. He's a Clemson man thru and thru.
I could see a 2 TE set where he's in to block. Quick on his feet and don't mind mixing it up. I would love to see him catch just one TD.

I don’t remember Schieffelin being all that quick, just a big body underneath. He’s got a passion for Clemson though so, hopefully this turns out well.

That would be cool if he could redshirt and practice and then play the following year.

I think this applies to the "4 years to play 5" rule in college sports, so a redshirt would not be an option because I think he only has this one year to play football.

that what he wants to do. Even with his success on the court, he has always seemed to look like a football playa who also happens to be a very good basketball playa. He's shown he's not afraid of contact and seems pretty fast so can only imagine what his height and awesome jumping ability could result in at the tight end position!!!

How exactly does brownell help Dabo? I don’t see how he continues to help someone when I never knew he helped him with much of anything in the past. I mean this isn’t a brownell diss I’m just super curious to know what he’s helping Dabo with? Go Tigers!!!

It is easy to see Dabo recruited Schieffelin to play for Brownell. Had Dabo not offered him to play football at the end, Schieff goes elsewhere.
I mean, it’s clear with Dabo playing it up during the bball season.

Stan Rome did it decades ago. The training will be different, but he has the body to be a TE. This is the time of year when the football players are transforming their bodies into shape for the season. If Ian is serious, this is the time to show it. I hope he is. I can really see him in the red zone.

I was hoping someone would mention Stan Rome playing football and basketball. but his contribution got cut off prematurely with his addiction to drugs and eventual prison sentience, mot to mention going pro for a team that never materialized.
With his size and his love of Clemson, Worst-case scenario, he will enjoy being at Clemson one more year. If everything works out like it should, his frame and athleticism will be appreciated.

I think you have Stan a little mixed up with Skip Wise. Skip signed with the Baltimore Claws in the ABA, and the team never played. Ended up in the drug world and went to jail. He was first team All ACC as a freshman guard back in 1974, his only season at Clemson. He should have stayed at Clemson...
I knew Stan as a student at Clemson, and he was an amazing athlete. Stan was a good basketball player, and he could play TE, Slot, or WR on the football field with ease. Our Tight End was Benny Cunningham (All American). Stan usually played Slot or WR, and Dabo would have loved him. We didn't throw much back then and had some bad teams..... He was a natural that loved basketball, but he was a better football player.
Got drafted and cut by Clevland in the NBA, but he was drafted and played for the KC Chiefs, along with Steve Fuller. After he retired to Valdosta, GA, he ended up involved with drugs and alcohol as well. He got shot in the head in a drug deal and survived. Cleaned up and became a drug counselor.
GO Tigers!

I would have thought he'd get some interest from European leagues or somewhere else internationally and they generally pay players well into 6 figures with the top leagues over a million.
Dude should have majored in French or German. Seems like most of our basketball players should.

He might get the stink eye from the Tight Ends on the team since they have been working their tails off to get playing time. Maybe he would be better used on defense in lining up the middle to block field goals.

It means nothing to Clemson Football unless it's a "Rudy" scenario where Schieffelin takes snaps away from frosh and soph TE's to score a TD in the last minutes of a runaway game vs. Furman.
It may mean something to Schieffelin if a booster contributes so he can finish up a Masters degree and avoid another year before he goes to work.

Future might be brighter as a punter or as a holder for FG / PAT

I can’t fathom Scheffelin being remotely competent as a blocker.
I doubt that he will become a good enough route runner or at recognizing holes in the zone (of the defense) to be equally effective as the other TEs on our roster.
The move to FB is great for fan buzz and PR, but is highly unlikely to contribute to the FB team overall.
However, as another poster in this thread had asked, can Scheffelin punt? We should try him out there.
Also, he has good hands; he might be good as the holder in FGs and PATs. He would be the lsrgest human being to ever play holder.

Genuinely curious how this would work. The article said he's exhausted all 4 years of eligibility on the court, but the NCAA doesn't distinguish eligibility between sports. It's just a simple "5 to play 4." Yes, there are examples of kids getting waivers and things like that so I'm guessing he would need some sort of special waiver to allow him to get a 5th year of eligibility. But if that's the case, then why not get a 5th year in basketball. I really don't understand the NCAA anymore.

With the expanded roster, it would not surprise me if you see that. Teams have carried long snappers for years. Why not a designated FG blocker? They could have significant value.

Is there any downside? The only downside I see is a team could fake the kick and run up the middle past our two 7 foot 280 pound D-tackles.

seems like an instant target on the goal line
..with his size, hands and leap
just toss it up there - dude will go pull it down like a rebound
who can cover him without PI
to be honest I would plan his whole season around goal line use and special teams
woods blocking for rb, why not ian for the jump ball

He is meant to be an offensive tackle, but there is no time for that. If he had a redshirt year and 4 after that, he would thrive as an OT.

Did Ian Schieffelin catch 20 TDs as a high school soph for state champ?
May 1, 2025, 5:20 PM
|
|
Stan Rome was a high school player for the 1971 Valdosta Wildcats.
As a sophomore receiver in 1971, Rome caught 72 passes for 1,573 yards and 20 touchdowns, all state records at the time. Rome's also set career marks of 209 receptions for 4,187 yards and 43 touchdowns.
"Stan Rome was probably the best athlete I've seen on a football field," said Jim Hughes, long-time coach at Colquitt County and Thomasville. "To start with, he was 6-foot-5. He could out-muscle you, he could out-jump you. In high school, it's hard to matchup with a guy like."
Hughes had similar flattery for the '71 Valdosta team, which beat his Thomasville outfit 49-0 and scored a state-record 630 points in 13 games in legendary coach Wright Bazemore's last season.
Rome played in the 1974 North-South basketball game and scored 29 to lead the South to victory.
Rome later played football and basketball for Clemson before a brief NFL career.
