I was already a Geezer when I took up jogging. I have had a lot of fun with it, met some fun folks. Robbie posted a photo today of three of what we normal joggers called "The Heroes". There were a few more, Steve Seaborn (Clemson Great) and Marty Gass come to mind.
"The Heroes" were all best buddies of mine, saw them most every day for years, traveled with them, drank beer with them. They luv me and appreciated my efforts as a geezer. I did not train with them as their "daily pace" was my "race day" pace. I often went to the track with them as there all just do ###?
All had been college all-stars and were still jogging at a high level in their 30's. As needed they would step up and run for LERA or Roadkill. That meant my teams could not be defeated. It was impossible. Some got offers of a Gore-Tex suit or ### to change teams, but these guys were not in it for fame or fortune -> they already had that.
This photo is 3 old guys (Robbie Smith, George Walker, Randy Aldridge) at Country Day track doing repeats. Watching them would make my ears bleed. Talent and training - normal folks like me can't be these guys.

I highly respect racers. I’m a runner. I run four miles a day five days a week. I can win a few local 5k races (in my 54 year old class) but nothing noteworthy. I just enjoy the runner high and how it kinda keeps me young. Cheers to your three musketeers and you for keeping the torch lit!

I looked kinda like them back then, just older. Here I am at 48 with Marty Gass after I won the 10K overall at Kings Mountain and he won the Masters in the 5K. The guys I drank beer with demanded one be the best example of themselves.

Thought this was going to be about the 1995 Braves reunion last night.
Nevermind.

I miss running. I ran cross country and track in high school and got a small scholarship to Spartanburg Methodist in cross country. Can’t muster up the motivation now. My son is 9 and he’s done the mile in the midnight flight the past few years. I’ve run it with him every time and almost puked this past year when we broke 7 minutes (6:58). I remember running 4:50 in repeats at practice with ease.

I ran that at 47 under 17 and lost to Clemson Professor Gerry Carner by one step.
Maybe you could do like me and walk some most days? Unlike you, never was fast, still enjoy getting out there.

Is doing 7 minute mile in combat boots good? Seems like that was a goal during training in the army

Man, the Midnight Flight brings back memories. Loved the 5k race there. Fast course and the only time of day in the Upstate where running was tolerable that time of year.

Running is your pace and faster. Anything slower is jogging.

These days I walk in the heat and get my heart beat up over 130.

Terms are for ego folks. I am not able to run in this heat/humidity as I have gotten fat and out of shape.
Walking "with purpose" is my best option right now.
I hope to pick it up soon as Fall arrives.
The deal is the clock on race day. It cares not as to one's age or condition. I'll let that judge me.
