Game Day Superstitions

Jan 12, 2020, 11:05 AM

There are many in my house.

1. Clemson throw pillow must be held during pivotal moments. The same pillow must remain on sofa for duration of season.

2. All lights must be on and windows must be closed.

3. Husband must be wearing the same Clemson shirt for every game. No over shirts allowed.

4. No food is served during important games.

5. Very few people are allowed to watch Clemson with us. Certain people always jinx the game.

6. If Clemson is having a rough time, I leave the room. Within minutes they are fine.

While I know deep down that superstition isn’t real and that I have no effect on the game, I swear that any deviation of these rules lead to disaster.

What are your game day superstitions?

Re: Game Day Superstitions

Jan 12, 2020, 11:22 AM

I have a couple:

1. I have to go for a drive to get breakfast drive thru or Dunkin’ Donuts and listen to ELO’s Mr. Blue Sky and George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord.

2. Wear a jersey which matches the team’s home/away designation

3. For every Tiger Rag sung, I give a fist pump to my panoramic picture of Death Valley

These are what has worked, and I see no reason to change. You are welcome!

Way too many to list.

My daughter called me 3 years ago after the DW4 to HR13 pass. The phone rang 3 times then stopped. She called again 5 minutes later, not with congratulations but an apology for calling too early...she didn't realize there was still 1 second on the clock.

I only have 2.

1. Morning coffee in my Dexter mug on game day. Mug is only used on game day. No other days. It has traveled with me to Las Vegas, and on cruises so as not to break the streak.

2. Wearing of a specific pair of Clemson socks on game day. Same conditions as with the mug.

The socks are not holding up as well as the mug.

My Clemson gameday rule is usually no one outside of my home are allowed to watch Clemson games with me. My wife, and my 4 legged best friend is it for me when watching Clemson games on TV... Everybody and everything is locked and blocked out, I won't answer the door or the phone until the game is over. If there is a knock on the door, or if the phone rings, I ignore it bc I don't know them!!! My family knows that if an emergency comes up, text me and I will call them right back!!!!!:)

Only my son and grandsons watch together. NO One else. We won't answer calls or text. Grandson's say they can only eat Little Caesar's pizza and drink Orange Crush as that is what I started bringing for them years ago. Not really superstitious but that's how we roll.

Jersey color

Jan 12, 2020, 11:45 AM

My brother was stationed in Korea for a year & had some custom jerseys made, which he gave me two when he returned home in 2014 - an orange Vic Beasley jersey & a white Deshaun Watson jersey. Started with 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl & picked it up when I got back from my stint overseas in 2015 when I'm not at work or in a place/position I can't wear the jersey- if Clemson is home or designated home team, wear my orange V. Beasley jersey, if Clemson is away or designated away, wear the white DW4 jersey. Only time I deviated from that - 1st title game against Alabama, which we lost. Since then, I've kept that pattern & only lost 2 games where I've worn my jerseys with the pattern mentioned ('16 Pitt & '18 Sugar Bowl)

Did someone mention socks?

My shirts must be layered - purple - orange - purple depending on the weather. I always were my purple and orange jersey #27. I have three identical hooded sweatshirts in orange, purple, and white to suit the occasion.

Purple soccer socks with orange tennis shoes or vice-versa.

I mix my bourbon and diet coke in a 32 ounce purple mug that goes everywhere with me - everywhere

For big games, I buy a new hat and put the manes of the teams playing on the underside of the bill. After the game I put the score.

Day before I imbibe in Clemson pint glass - then switch to kids' college glassware for game day.

Pre-game playlist - about 10 songs starting with "Ulile E" from Descendants then wrapping with Parliament's "All Your Goodies Are Gone". Dates back to 2013 with a few additions along the way.

Food and drink themed around opponent - the tougher the match-up the more exotic and plentiful this goes. For Monday it's going to be Hurricanes (of course), Jambalaya, Maque Choux and homemade Beignets. Friend is bringing over some Popeye's for good measure. For O-4-O State it was amaretto (a nut liquor) and bourbon based "Bucknut Smashes" plus peanuts - a legume intended to add further insult to the bucknut crowd.

Foam #1 finger, orange fro wig, orange salt lamp, the family penguin - this year added the 2018 National Champs "Tiger Rag" from the Ga. Tech opener to the mix.

Lastly I light up my Tiki man on the patio with enough fuel to go the distance.

Go Tigers!

We all must drink a Bloody Mary in game day. This has been perfect system for past 4-5 years. FYI, my family sincerely apologizes for not having one vs Pitt and Syracuse and in NOLA two years ago. We will NEVER forget again.

Must be out of bed and bed made before 7 am and the throw pillows must be in a certain position on bed. Wife not allowed to make said bed on game day.
2. Flag must be outside and flying by 7 am.
3. Place 1 can of Pepsi by recliner. Also 1 bottle of Pepsi by recliner. Can to be opened on defense indicating "kick a.s.s." Bottle opened on offense for unleashing the offense. Seems to work.
4. Must wear same pants, shirt, socks and underwear for all games. Yes they have been washed.
5. Wife must do laundry doing game.
6. Granddaughter must post video of "go Tigers" for each game.
7. Must sit on edge of recliner and shoes placed looking toward t.v
8. Hat must be on top of lamp shade pointing toward t.v.
9. Must drink coffee out of large Clemson coffee mugs.
10. No eating during game.

Day before games I drive by the East Endzone and peer through the gates. We’ve never lost a home game when I did this. Yes, I admit I did not do this before the 2016 Pitt game. It was all my fault. Since that game I make a point to drive by. I am very selective about who I’ll go to a game with, and I cannot watch a TV game with anyone but close family. Had to watch the Fiesta Bowl with Mother-in-law. I love her but that was torture for me. I skip all the viewing parties. I probably average replaying wins on the dvr about 7 times. My daughter, a 2019 graduate, always jokes during the many replays...”you think we’ll win Dad?!” ??

Years ago, someone on here mentioned smelling a skunk on Gamedays. My fiancée and I talked and realized we also (usually) smelled a skunk on our drive up to Keowee prior to the games. Since then, it’s become a thing - she has to smell a skunk. The games we haven’t, it’s been the games we’ve lost.

We have spent several Friday late nights driving around the backroads of Keowee, trying to smell a dead skunk. Now, family members call pregame to tell us their skunk updates and we have a stuffed animal skunk hanging in my Clemson bar room.

My MIL actually just called to tell us she smelled a skunk last night up at the lake, so hopefully all is well.

.....I make sure the TV is at the perfect volume.

2 - When Clemson is on defense ...I get down on all fours about 5-ft in front of the TV and watch the opposing offense's every move...shift..and formation ...and yell for the defense to hurry and make the tackle.

3- When Clemson is on offense I sit on the edge of the cushion of my couch.

Re: Game Day Superstitions

Jan 12, 2020, 1:17 PM

Mine is strange. I actually wear the colors of the opponent. Even my coworkers have started to notice. Started a few years back and it's kinda worked, so I've stuck with it. Some player years ago said he wore the opposing team's color under his jersey so I got it from that. Didn't do it for the Pitt game when we lost and didn't have any crimson the last time Bama beat us.
Gotta admit I would prefer to wear my Clemson gear instead. After tomorrow's game, I'm stopping my tradition.

Then again, I told myself that last year as well.

Toes must be painted - big toe purple with orange tiger paw - remaining toes orange.

Tiger paw light must be on -- if I'm at the game a responsible Clemson fan is left with tiger-paw-light duty.

Light up sign is changed to Go Tigers - Beat (current opponent) -- had to change from Ohio State to O310 State to shake up the mojo during the Fiesta Bowl so I'm going with Beat LSWho for this game. This sign is battery operated and I decided to take it with me for the A&M game. The letters got a little warped in the heat though, so it's now relegated to the responsible adult that has tiger-paw-light duty if I'm at the game.

Countless and complicated wardrobe rules, including rally "hair".

Also a giant monkey (6 ft tall) that my husband bought at a conference auction has preferred seating for the entirety of football season. He has on a 2XL orange Clemson shirt. We are undefeated with him in his seat.

Turnover shots when the Clemson D makes an interception or recovers a fumble.

Lots more that cause my closest friends to question my sanity.
