Is this the most important regular season game in Clemson history?
The narrative is that Clemson is regressing, which has validity. Is this a "passing of the torch" moment for the program?
That 2015 game against FSU was a major turning point for us. We were on the rise, while FSU was in decline coming off that 2013 national title and 2014 embarrassment in the semi-finals of the playoffs. They were the one program that we needed to beat to become the top program in the conference. We won that game and went on a historical run while FSU really fell apart.
Is something similar on the line this weekend? I can't imagine Clemson falling apart like they did given the culture that Dabo has built. But this game would be the proof that Clemson has fallen far from the ranks as an elite program.
I'm nervous. FSU makes scores a late TD but gets denied for a two point conversion. Tigers on top 28-26.

There are 11 players on each side of the ball for a reason, so no Cade can't control by himself, he will need the help of the other 10 players to help him to control it!!!

The media has blown this game up as a NIL team vs. a Non-NIL team and there's a narrative going around that since we haven't used the transfer portal, we're a dinosaur in the "new, modern" CFB landscape. I reject the idea that this is "the most important game" in Clemson football history. Far from it.
Personally, I look through all that media noise and see this as a matchup that we can win---provided we avoid silly mistakes on offense and special teams. It will be a closer game than many in the media are predicting, but at the same time, I wouldn't rule out a blowout if the silly mistakes continue. FSU is just too talented for us to make those kinds of mistakes and expect to win.

I agree with this sentiment. If Clemson plays a clean game, we likely win a close one. If Clemson is careless with the ball, it can get ugly.
It feels like Clemson winning in a blowout is the least likely outcome.

Looking at Clemson football history, I'd say the win vs. #8 UNCheat in 1981 was THE biggest game in Clemson football history, with the natty game vs. Nebraska ranking a close 2nd. Those games put our football program on the national scene.

Assuming our DE's can set the edge. Thus far, only our freshman DE has proven that he can. Travis is at his most dangerous out of the pocket.

What games have you been watching? XT/Mascoll have consistently NOT set the edge. That's been a huge problem for this defense getting off the field on 3rd and long situations.

I've been saying this all year as well... We have not been good about setting the edge at DE or with the LBs on the second level. Seems like every time a guy breaks it outside someone has over-pursued and the opponent gets a solid gain.
For the LBs against Duke, it felt like they were trying to run downhill to make a huge play, and Duke just popped it outside for 15+. This game will be huge for assignment football. We have to set the edge, and have everyone stay within their assignments or we will get exposed and need a lot of points on offense to keep up.
Watch the Duke offensive highlights to see them them break it outside over and over https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbTYTg4yKWc

Ruke, TD, and Woods will need to clog up his rushing lanes. Our DEs are a huge X factor on defense for sure. If they find a way to get pressure, our DTs have to prevent Travis from taking off on huge runs.
I actually believe our CBs will hold in up in coverage against Coleman and Wilson. Nate and Sheridan match up well against them. I am concerned about our safeties/nickel though. They have to be great.

Khalil Barnes will play as Mukuba has been ruled out with injury. I'm actually feeling pretty good about the safety play if he's in the game. And Covill has been solid against the run. And I think Lukus/Terrell have been playing very well also.

Clemson was already on the rise for most of those games. We were trending in the right direction. And none of those teams were threatening to supplant us the top team in the conference. None of those teams were headed to the playoffs if they beat us. None of those teams were going to be able to dominate the conference for years after beating us.
That's why I believe this game is much more important. FSU is trending up, while we are trending down. If they beat us this year, they likely are headed to the playoffs. Then it gets tricky on when we could surpass them again. This game is important for the next several years.

I think you are missing my point. Clemson was on the rise for those games and none of our opponents were set up for sustained success, even if they beat us.
Clemson has been regressing and FSU looks like a program that can surpass us as the dominant program in the conference. That's why it is so important.

I could be wrong, but FSU looks like a one year deal to me. If they weren’t so portal heavy you might would be right. Unless they hit the portal for 14-16 starters next year, I don’t see where they look to be on the rise.

Nice explanation of your belief in how this could be crossroads game for both programs.
History will tell us if that was what happened, so your foresight here could be substantiated. This game, while a big game, is nowhere near what I would consider most important in Clemson history. I do not think it is as important as multiple games over the last 10 years. The LSU win on last second FG put Clemson squarely in the up and coming program. The ND win in Death Valley during the torrential downpour was vital in the progress of Clemson football.
Saturday is the most important game of 2023 to this point no doubt, and will be a factor in both teams playoff chances.
A Clemson win keeps a shot at ACCCG & CFP, a loss and chances are gone IMO.
A FSU win, they are the top team in ACC and have a very clear path to CFP. A loss and honestly think they are out of any CFP picture as well.
I am honestly not sure how Saturday will go, but I see a path for each team to win and it will come down to the fundamentals. Ball control, ball security, hitting some big plays, defensive discipline to name the most important. Could be a FG at end to win it for either team, or could be a 10+ point victory for either team.
Crowd needs to be as energetic as possible for a nooner, any help provided with some false starts will go a long way towards a victory.
Go Tigers!!

Totally agree with your assessment. Just one more factor in this game——the refs! Hope they don’t do Clemson like they did BC when they played FSU! There is NO WAY they had 19 penalties and FSU 0! Some were legitimate, but many were not & they just totally ignored all of the ones from FSU. Go Tigers!

This is definitely one of the most important games in recent Clemson history. It will set the tone for the remainder of the season and possibly the next few years. With the NIL and transfer portal, Dabo has only this season and possibly next season to show that you can still win in college football doing it “his way”. Showing recruits what Clemson is, while we can still utilize our recent championship/playoff wins. Lose this game, and the media/ESECPN will jump on “Dabo and Clemson are stuck in the past and cannot succeed in today’s college football.”
This team can win. They have the talent. BUT this team is inconsistent in almost every aspect. We have yet to see them play a complete 4 quarter game. That’s what defined our teams of the past, being able to battle and follow through til the end. And I have no idea what to expect on Saturday.

I also believe it has ramifications for the next few years. FSU is on a roll. The portal clearly flipped their roster. But now they are rolling with recruiting as well. They might finish in the top 10 this year, which would be a first in a while for them.
The stakes are so high, not only for this season (conference championship/playoff contention), but for the future as well.
So let's win this win and remain on top.

This is exactly why I don't necessarily hang too much foundational relevance on this game as the narrative following would be skewed accordingly and not of equal footing.
We certainly have the tools to win, and win convincingly. We can also lose just the same - we're playing what looks to be an excellent and very veteran team.
The narrative you're painting IMO is fueled more by the media as to its meaning on a larger scale. In terms of league supremacy, Dabo has a rock solid foundation in place here. We fell off in 2021 only to bounce right back and take back what's ours last year, squarely in the running for a CFP berth right up to the last regular season game. NC State was primed to be the big cheese with their own 6th year QB. Wake had a generational QB fresh off a division championship. Boom, and boom.
Maybe FSU does win Saturday with a boatload of older portalers? IMO that's much harder to replicate in following years than Dabo's more institutional, long game approach, especially with the high level of talent we continue to attract. Media and many fans may want to write us off going forward with an L. I don't buy it, thus why I don't assign the greater importance to Saturday's game as do many others. It's a huge game for this season, for sure, but that's all.
Go Tigers!

this year but the next few to keep us at the CFP discussion level. However, I think our most important regular season game was September 19, 1981. That victory over UGA didn't just lead us to a national championship but has kept us in the national discussion pretty much ever since.

I don't know if it is the most important regular season game in Clemson history but it is certainly up there. However, it may very well be the most important regular season game in FSU history. They have been looking up at our backside for quite a while now and you know they want to change the view.
FSU has only been to one modern day CFB playoff and that was back in 2015. With the talent they have, you know they believe this has to be their year to unseat us and get themselves in position to win the conference. I think the pressure on them to perform may be even greater than the pressure on us.
I expect an absolute war on Saturday and I have no doubt that we will be ready to go toe to toe with them. Dabo generally thrives in big games like this.
I believe this game will live up to the hype and I'm going with the Tigers in a squeaker...

This is a bigger game for FSU than it is for Clemson. Granted the Tigers have a LOT to lose in this game but FSU is trying to regain their existence in college football ....at Clemsons expense. Dabo knows this, This will not be an easy win regardless of who ends up with the most points. DV is a good place to play Saturday. You need to be at this game. There will not be another like it in DV for a while. Support Clem$on.

Clemson beat this team last year they added near nothing of relevance to the defense. Let me repeat this Clemson beat this FSU team in Doak Campbell with the worst QB in 15 years at the helm. Im sick of hearing about how Clemson stands no chance. Spot the ball im ready to see Dabo shock the world again.

This is what’s so weird about this game to me. Clemson won there last year without much issue, yet the two teams are basically the same, but Clemson has no chance apparently. I thought going into the season Clemson would be better than last year, but it doesn’t feel that way. Losing to Duke obviously was a shock. Another surprise to me is that the defense and all that experience and talent at DT and other spots, can’t pressure a QB. It’s been confusing to say the least thus far.

I think both Clemson and FSU will be in the ACC-CG in December. Regardless of the outcome of this game.
The only reason this game is important in the W-L column is because a loss ensures we will not be in the CFP.

I wouldn't go as far as labeling it the passing of the torch game, but it is the most important now if the playoffs is all that you care about for the season, and I say it like this bc I have set in DV through the cold rain when we would only win 5-6 games that season, so no I don't see it as a passing of the torch game, but it is very important to win the next game throughout the rest of the season to make the playoffs!!!!

Fsu beat lsu last year too. Look how that turned out. Fsu is just as prone to mistakes as Clemson is. It's been 8 years since we've lost to fsu. We win a close one if we take care of business. 31-27.
