Freshman Class

The fact that nobody played any this season is a head scratcher! Nobody got any experience for next year. There are some guys that could've played, at least had enough AB's to see what you got and develop them for next year. Sure, you don't waste a redshirt, but these guys are looking at three to 4 years max anyway, not looking to stay around for 5 years! Most schools will give their Fr a chance during midweek games. I guess we didn't exactly put teams away, so we had to play all starters all game? Lets see who stays and who goes?!?

Class of 2024 had 4 top 250 players - Talen Bell, TP Wentworth, Owen Anchors and Austin Jacobs. But guys like Anchors, Jacobs, Brendon Bennett, Castellani and Moehler were not PG showcase guys, do not have a grade and would probably be ranked higher if they had paid more to PG! They are all DUDES!

Lost Chase Harlan to the draft - 3rd round LA Dodgers

Bell and Wentworth saw action this year, that's it! (Bennett got some innings before injury)

*Moehler got hurt and was projected to be Sunday starter - will be back and be in starting rotation eventually and be THAT guy!
*Bell will push for starting rotation
*Bennett has great stuff, hopefully gets 100% healthy and will push for starting position or be a very strong reliever
*Wentworth- EB loves this kid and is penciled in as next years CF. Not sure about his bat or if he becomes a PO or sticks as a 2 way?

*Castellanin should've had some reps this year at 3B, but didn't get any! Would have given more power and most likely less SO's than Paino, but maybe not as good defensively.

*Anchors should've seen some OF time at least midweeks. he can hit well and gives you great athleticism. Left handed power potential and probably could've given you everything you got our of RF while getting experience for the future.

*Jacobs can play a mean SS and hit! Again, should've seen some action this year at least during mid weeks. Was an FSU commit along with Bell. Could be rethinking decision???

So without any guys having experience, EB is going to have to go get some guys through the portal and those guys will play because, apparently, he guarantees that! He said he wanted to build the program via high school guys but does not seem like that's the case. Those kids will stop coming here since no freshman get a chance, unless you're a pitcher.

You definitely know more than our coaching staff! You must have been at every practice and training session all fall and spring.

Get lost...

I totally agree. The one and done portal renters sure haven't lived up to their billing. There was no reason paino and listi had to get all the reps. So, I'm in complete agreement that others should have seen some games. Hindsight is 20/20. Even EB questions some of his decisions. It does seem like we could have gotten better transfers that'd played well on d1 blue blood teams.

EB consistently rotated RF, but with the same guys. He stated pre-season there was 15 guys that deserved to play. But I only saw 12.

I get the argument that we're not at practice. But sometimes you need to see what guys can do when the lights are on. And I'm not talking just a pinch hit here or there... that's worthless unless you're playing matchups. No reason not to give the young ones a complete series.

This has nothing to do with how we performed or didn't perform on the field. It's about the future. I do know it's disappointing that we're still recruiting the 3rd, 4th, or 5th rated class in the acc... let alone competing nationally in recruiting. Other non private schools are raking top 100, top 50 guys for 3 years... and don't tell me it's nil.

Easy to post a comment that you're a coot. T-Net used to be a great place for discussions. Go Tigers. Finish strong.

Well said. I didn't respond to the "know and see more than the coaches", because there wasn't a need, but I will say I saw 5-6 fall scrimmages, went to Tuscaloosa and saw a few preseason scrimmages. Based on what I saw I did expect to see those guys I mentioned get SOME playing time. And get them ready to come in if/when needed. It also gets them experience for the future so you don't have to shopping in the portal so much. This staff is full of good recruiters and with the increased scholarships they will be able to offer more kids more $$$

I want to add a little to this point. I want to start with Dom Listi has been great and I'd take him any time to be my lead off guy. But the others...

Paino has always been a high strikeout, low batting average guy. At Cal Baptist his BA was .247, .270, .296. Struck out 30, 60 and 69 times. (.267 with 67 strikeouts this year)

Ciufo has never batted over .300. Great glove though.

Priest was .279 with 11 home runs and 52 strikeouts as a freshman at Michigan. (.257 with 40 strikeouts and 10 home runs this year)

Gaffney had a heck of a year at Purdue as a freshman with .359 BA and 13 home runs. (The only outlier)

This is the biggest point I want to make - What kind of pitching were these guys actually seeing in the BIG10, Missouri Valley, WAC and Big East???? Why did we expect better performance with an elite schedule???

I’d like to see the underclassmen get more PT just to see what we have for the future. Hopefully they stay. Coach has been pretty reliant on transfers the last two years. The portal giveth and the portal taketh away.

We hire coaches because we think they know what they are doing. I don't always understand why they do things, but mostly figure it is because of me not them. But obviously coaches also make mistakes, and I'll bet they know way more of their own mistakes than you or I do. But it is hard to be too critical of a coach and team that has risen to the second spot in college baseball. Personally, I never thought they were the #2 team, although they may have deserved that position due to their play. I thought there were maybe eight or ten teams better, regardless of records .... maybe more.

I would have liked to see more young players out there too, but the coaches are trying to win games and week to week know who should be on the field. I also don't discount the learning curve that young players go through going from high school to college and put those decisions into the ones who see them every day. I honestly do not see how anyone could be critical of playing Listi the entire year, especially as the lead-off hitter. There are many teams that would have loved to have him on their roster.

I wonder if Texas is getting the same criticism after being swept by Arkansas. In fairness, your comments would probably still have been made if we had swept FSU, and your opinion is just as valid as mine ..... just different!

It's very difficult to evaluate baseball talent.
Pro players can go into a slump for 30 games or more and still have a great year. That many games is about a full season in college ball. Coaches have to play the Players they think will help them win. It takes a bunch of games to figure out who can play.
I agree with you that he could of played some other players in certain games.
