Free throws

Awful percentage that will definitely get us beaten in close games. After practice, our coach had us shoot 100 free throws, and recorded our production. My game average was 89% from the line. When you shoot 80% or better, the opposing team is afraid to fowl you, giving you some space for better shot taking during the game. Some coaches just don't get it. I would never recruit a player whose average from the free throw line was less than 70%, unless, of course, his name was Shaq. Percentages from the free throw line are often a good indicator of the other skills of a basketball player.

David Collins was the main problem. He was just over 50 percent makes on free throws all four years at S Florida. That can be contagious to other players on the team especially the first game. Hope we have better free throw coaches than S Florida that can get that to at least over 60 percent or I agree, we will miss a lot of close games.

You would have passed on Collins?
Really, the issue was Hall and Collins ... more Collins. It was a liability for Collins (sub 70) at USF especially as his minutes increased. On the other side, he was 5-7 from the floor so sometimes it bouncing that way but he will be a liability late if it isn't better. Just shooting more isn't going to help.
Really, anything over 65% is considered to be valuable. 65% from the FT is more valuable than 40% from 3pt. Sure, because FT% is a lot easier to get above 75% in theory, that 75% is worth 1.5 points per possession while that would need to be 50% shooting from the arc. That asterisk is that anyone can crank out a 3 but not everyone can make trips to the line. So it is a bit more convoluted.
In Shaq's case, he averaged at or often above 60% from the field. 1.2 points per possession. His 50% ish free throw percentage made him only a 1.0 points per possession guy. That is a big hit.

No, he played very well over all and was a good player at S Florida, but that is his major weakness. Collins does everything else well: drive, shoot, pass, defend. He can do most everything well, but that is his weakness. S Florida lost a lot of close game at the foul line when he missed some key shots. Collins will be even better here because he doesn't have to play the point any whicas h he did some at S Florida. He can be more effective but just has to shoot from there better. Hall has a good technique and will get better also.

My question was really for danagee, because I agree, Collins is a very good addition for us and a very good player. I would not pass on him
I agree, not running point, maybe better rotation, etc would increase his FT. Not sure exactly how he was being used at USF (I only watched highlights etc, but if he had to take more of the defensive role or pushing the offense without bench support, tired legs could make his 70ish normal FT dip. Then again, he could just be one of those hot or cold guys. Heck, I was just under 70%FT guy but I would be 9/10 or 4/10. I was either good or off.

Just remember: If it is late in the game, and a team is less than 10 points behind and needing the ball, it's a fairly decent bet that they repossess the ball by fowling the bad ft shooters.

Actually, "when" in the game does not matter... a missed FT in the first minute counts the same as one in the last minute. There is a game flow/control, sure and then some decisions but if it is a know risk, he will not be handling the ball as much. Even then, I will take a sure-handed guard with a meh FT% because 50%FT is better than a TO.
His scoring efficiency is very good and I will take that over a FT percentage. Heck, he creates foul shots, and that is useful at times. Sure, better FT is better but harping on this is penny-wise, pound foolish.
