Flight Discussion Thread

Dec 12, 2019, 3:36 PM

Hey all -

I posted last night a bit about this. The woman and I are debating flying out to Phoenix for the game - we have no kids, are both free from work responsibilities around the holidays and have the money to do it if we want. But - being that it's sandwiched between Christmas and New Years, we'd like to find a quick, reasonably priced flight. I'm not expecting cheap, but would like something reasonable. We live in Charleston, but will likely be in the upstate for Christmas and would leave our dogs with the in-laws (who live on Keowee) if we go - so GSP, ATL or CLT are also options.

So far, all I've found are coach seats in the $850-$900 range (RT each) that include ~12 hour layovers or direct flights from ATL that are in the $1500-$2k range. We'd like to fly in on Thursday (12/26) and fly out Sunday (12/29) so that we don't miss any holiday obligations. And, I'd prefer not having to fly into LAS and then making two 4-5 hour drives.

Anyone that's going have any insight or suggestions? Private charters?

We're definitely going to New Orleans, so I'm not dead set on going, but would like to, if we can find something decent.

Augusta, GA has direct flights to

Dec 12, 2019, 4:04 PM

Charlotte then connect to Phoenix. $2,730 for 2 people. A little pricey, but this minimizes time.

1 stop on the way ... 6h 30m trip
2 stops on the return trip ... 7h 15m

Augusta also has a direct flight to Dallas, then you can take a flight to Phoenix, but I don't have enough info about your travel dates to research the availability.

Augusta has a layover in Dallas if you fly American im flying out of Augusta at 4 pm Friday, and arrive in phoenix at 920 pm(of course they are two hours behind us) making it less than 6 hours. I was happy with that flight leaving and arriving time and flying back home time
But there is no direct flight from augusta to phoenix, always a layover in charlotte, dallas or atlanta but usually not bad

my flight was 1000 total out of augusta, but my layover is in Dallas not charlotte, but I know they had some flights in the 1300 range when I was looking, I picked one that was 997. I did not pay all the extra fees for extra leg room on each flight which will raise the price up, so I guess seeing these prices im happy for 1000 dollar flight

I heard going into Palm Springs, CA was also an option.

Dec 12, 2019, 4:06 PM

well I understand your situation, the flights were in the 6-900 range the day of cfp announcement, by Monday they were kept going up and flights with no long layovers were getting less to find, so I booked mine out of augusta ga to phoenix, I also did not want to do the 4-5 hour drive from vegas and the flight I got was 1000 each. I tried atlanta, augusta, Charleston and charlotte, all were pricey..
so I may have spent 100 more by leaving augusta but its only 15 min drive to augusta airport for me.

Keep checking flight availability though ...

Dec 12, 2019, 4:17 PM

... last year the flights to San Francisco were $2,000 each , but when a flight opened up and the price dropped down to $800 each, we snapped up two tickets and attended the natty win in Santa Clara :D

I had booked a hotel 4 months in advance "just in case", and the game tickets kept dropping, so we were able to get some great seats for a reasonable price.

GOOD LUCK!! GO TIGERS!

We are flying from ATL to PHX on Friday night returning Sund

Dec 12, 2019, 4:20 PM

We're traveling on Delta Friday night returning Sunday. It looks like the flight is $830. There is also a flight on Thursday for $696. We were able to use our Delta companion certificate and only paid for one flight. Come go with us.

Free advice: find round trip deals from Phoenix to anywhere. Example: $158 round trip to Chicago on southwest from Phoenix. Then find a deal to Chicago from your original airport, say $200 roudtrip greenville to Chicago. TOTAL $358 round trip. The trick is to have two different flights that don’t set off the algorithms and jack your price up to $1000. DO NOT SEARCH A FLIGHT FROM ANYWHERE IN SOUTH CAROLINA TO PHOENIX AR THEEND OF DECEMBER. OR CHARLOTTE OR ATLANTA.

I just checked American from Charlotte to Denver leaving 12-27 and returning 12-30. $226 round trip. THEN I CHECKED Denver to Phoenix on the same dates on American and the round trip was $235. That’s $461 round trip Charlotte to Phoenix leaving 12-27 and returning 12-30. All on American

Here’s a site that is pretty handy for checking combinations of fights and routings, in case you are just using the airline sites themselves. I like this better than Kayak or similar sites:

Good luck!

Haven't seen any so far, but not really sure how I would know other than to keep looking.

Dont ask me how this happened, because I have no idea, but I got a flight two years ago last minute with less than 48 hours before game time for $450 on Southwest. They released some last minute flights or something. It was just meant to be! Got to see 31-0 in person.

Re: Flight Discussion Thread

Try Atlanta or other airports away from Gsp area. Flights usually don’t drop after 14 days advance. I’m in the industry and bought my fully refundable tickets 4 months ago using points worth a few hundred bucks round trip when SWA had huge sale. I also got rooms in both Atlanta and Phoenix 4-5 months ago . I posted once about it as a PSA a few months ago since last year prices got crazy. I would never booked 2 separate airlines. If 1st airline cancels or delays etc, you will not have anyway to get money back or go on second airline. 2nd airline has zero responsibilities to get you anywhere since you didn’t fly them all the way. Good luck. I’ll post more than once next year as a reminder. Only thing people would be out buying fully refundable tickets is the interest on card for few months.
