Why are you attacking Bowden, a college football analyst, for analyzing Dabo and Clemson especially given he praised the program.

Sep 21, 2017, 2:38 PM

Dabo is a CEO who hires good people and let's them do their jobs - that obvious with BV and the other coaches. Dabo knows how to run the program.
What's sad is that Bowden thought he could be a CEO - thought he could be like his father at FSU. But he didn't realize he needed to be a hands-on coach first and build a program like Dabo has done.

We wouldn't be where we are without Bowden
Sep 21, 2017, 2:57 PM
|
|
I was a student when Bowden was hired and everyone loved him in his early years. He took us to the next level with raising money for new facilities, recruiting, and bringing a more offensive mindset to our program, which gets fans excited. Unfortunately, when Rodriguez left, so did most of genius in the system we ran and Bowden had a hard time finding it again.
Bowden provided the talent through recruiting to allow us to compete with just about anyone on any given day, but his disconnect with fans and his players is why we couldn't do that consistently and why we often couldn't get mentally prepared for every game against teams we were supposed to beat.
Dabo has done a phenomenal job finding and investing in coaches that bring recruiting and expertise to allow us to compete at a high level and has brought on many former Clemson players to keep our coaching staff working and fighting for more than just a paycheck, but for the pride that can only come from being a part of the Clemson family as a student and player. His background is so similar to the plight of so many players and allows him to connect with them to where they want to make him proud of them as a coach, friend, and maybe even as a father.
Bowden could never in a million years have gotten this program to where it is today, but without him, Dabo wouldn't have had the opportunity to do it either.

That is correct. As someone who was a student when Hatfield was hired and a recent grad when West was hired, I can assure you that we have had worse than Bowden. Remember, he started with a 2-9 team that had been moving in a downward trajectory for about 7 or 8 years. Everyone was eating our linch on the recruiting trail - UT, UGa, VT, FSU. Heck, we were duking it out with the likes of UNC, NCSU and the Chickens. Bowden brought is a long way, and took a chance on a young ex-coach to coach receivers. I think we owe Bowden the respect of someone who helped get us where we are now.

I agree with a lot of what you said, however, Bowden's ego is such that he continually tries to take credit for what Dabo has done. Yes, he hired Dabo, but that is it. Dabo is a self-made man. He has made lots of decisions that were unpopular at first, but once successful, everyone agrees with. Bowden needs a lesson in humility.

Bowden calling Dabo a CEO is all anyone needs to know about
Sep 21, 2017, 3:27 PM

his opinion. Dabo is WAY more than a CEO. He's a football coach with CEO characteristics, and that's different than a CEO with a whistle around his neck. He also had to take credit, yet again, for hiring Dabo. Tommy Bowden is Jimmy Carter. Still trying to repaint his legacy in a positive light. The man only got the job because of his name. He rode the coattails of Rich Rodriguez and Shawn King to Clemson. Not the worst coach we ever had but certainly the most exasperating. Someone said it earlier, there's a reason he hasn't been hired as a coach again in 9 years. You knew Dabo was a great recruiter. Congratulations. We appreciate it. Adios.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as he was getting paid for anything other than coaching (like broadcasting), he was still getting a check from Clemson for firing him before his contract was up. He probably threw away his entire college coaching career because of his ego and wanting to stick it to Clemson.

Tommy did not have the financial resources that have been given to Dabo. Given the same resources IMO Tommy would have had more success. But I will concede that I don't think he TB would have had the same success as Dabo. Dabo has a much larger vision for Clemson than any previous Clemson coach.
I don't think TB gets enough credit for building a solid foundation and his contributions to the change in culture at Clemson. He was smart enough to hire Dabo and then recommended Dabo to replace him as the HC.
Trying to compare TB and Dabo is like apples and oranges. TB was more reserved where as Dabo brings excitement to the program.
Both coaches have made positive contributions to the program, but Dabo is a unique HC with big ideas and the confidence that they will succeed.

First, Dabo gave up part of his own salary to get what he wanted. He rolled the dice with his money. He gained success and then the purse strings loosened up.

The best thing/best decision/best move you ever made was to hire Dabo.
Otherwise, nobody cares about your opinion, especially a lot of Clemson fans who experienced a lot of misery while you were our coach.
I'm sure Dabo appreciates the fact that you don't give him any credit for being an outstanding coach.
Go away.

I don't pay one bit of attention to anything T Bowden has to Clemson, Dabo or anything else about FB. If he knew how to do it by knowing how it's all done, then how come he couldn't get the job done in the 10 years he was given to get the job done and didn't and couldn't. He hired Spence that couldn't beat Wake on a consistant bases. IMO, he is talking through his A$S and expecting some kind accomplishment award for Dabo, when I feel safe saying that TDP had just as much or more for Dabo becoming our HC. Dabo has done what he has done at Clemson bc all he ask for was a chance to prove himself to Clemson and the coaching world, but mostly for Dabo to prove to himself that he could be a winning HC!!!

You make great points. God help Dabo if he loses 4 plus games 2 or 3 consecutive years. Some of the new TNetters will turn on him like a jacket!
No other HC has been given the resources that have been given to Dabo. I am not taking anything away from Dabo and what he has accomplished. I think he has down a great job and with the extra funds for coaching hires he has done a great job.
With the success Dabo and Co has had I rarely see any post about DF and most of the post are negative when it comes to TB. One would think TB did not accomplish anything at Clemson. He did beat SC approx. 80% of the time. And Hatfield never had a chance. Many fans disliked him before they ever met him.
Some of you new TNettets can be down right rude and egotistical as well as vicous in your post. TNetters use to treat each other with some measure of respect by how times have changed!

Good point. And FSU was great when TB started at Clemson. Not to mention some very tough games against Texas A&M, South Carolina (at the end of TB's time at Clemson), Tennessee, Miami, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Virginia, Auburn and Alabama. Clemson won some of those and lost some of them. I'm not sticking up for TB, but don't want to trash him without at least looking back at some of the challenges Clemson faced. From my distant perspective, it looked like the football program went down after Danny Ford was released and did not begin to recover until TB was here for a couple of years. He took it to the next level, but never got any higher, which is what was so frustrating. Of course, Dabo and company have given all of us a slice of heaven.

Bowden never had passers like Boyd and Watson. OUr offense was able to win a lot of shootouts over the years when our defense was giving up a lot of points. Dabo's first ACC title was with a team with bad defense and bad O-line, the team that was blown out by West Virginia.

I think main difference b/t Bowden and Dabo is Dabo is better at selling CLemson probably due to his business background. The facility upgrades have obviously helped recruiting as well.

Whitehurst was a good passer, but will unfortunately be remembered for a junior year where he struggled after setting the bar so high his sophomore year. I still think his struggles his junior year came after losing confidence in his receivers (after so many catchable passes turned into interceptions) and second guessing whether to throw instead of trusting his instincts like he did towards the end of his sophomore year.

Dabo loves Clemson. Bowden never did. He loved himself and his family. He didn't loathe losing. He played the Alabama HC opening for more money from Clemson. He threatened to haul ### to Arkansas and got a ridiculous buyout in his contract. He walked away with $3.5 mil he didn't earn. IMO, all that negates any credit people want to give him, now. Thanks for bringing in Dabo. You were a mediocre coach, at best, and a mediocre CEO, for that matter.

When you jog past tailgaters early in the morning in front The Esso and they are waving and yelling for at least a friendly wave and you do absolutely nothing but the President of Clemson University actually stops and talks to those same tailgaters when he jogs past them, then you'll never be accepted by the fan base.

...sad, it's like he's still making excuses for himself. I appreciate a lot of things that CTB did while at Clemson but he wasn't the complete package like CDS. CTB was just a stepping stone along the way.

Bowden was the Coot Slayer, 7-2 against the coots. Dabo is 4-5. ]
Given how often the coots are mentioned on this forum, I figured Bowden's 7-2 would get him more mileage.

You got a 100 percent because you are a homer brown-noser type who never says anything that isn't the current majority opinion on here. lol
Most of my downvotes were not Clemson related, it was triggered liberals who don't like conservative opinions.

I wasn't posting on here in 2008. I was against firing the coach midseason like that and I did think it was weird that a head coach would be fired mid season to be replaced by a young WRs coach with no head coach experience.
Given your hostile behavior on here, anger about Bowden a decade after he left, seems more probable that you threw a temper tantrum over a young WR coach being hired. lol

let's be clear Tommy, the game plan goes through Dabo

particularly offensively. he can scheme and game plan just fine. he and Napier worked just fine when they had playmakers. Napier isn't here because they had philosophical differences but both are good coaches.
I defended Bowden for a long time but get a little tired of the backhanded compliments all the time. the truth is Clemson thought they were getting an offensive innovator with Bowden but it was his OC that came with him that was the brains of the operation. and don't forget the saga of moving Jack Hines all over the coaching staff trying to hide his ineptness. the Bowden era has scarred the fan base to the point where we're always looking around the corner for something bad to happen and wondering when the wheels are gonna fall off. the players said he was unapproachable and guys felt like they were in the dog house and didn't know why or how to get out. if Bowden was 1/4 the coach he thought he was, he'd be coaching somewhere right now.

You'd think they were quoting Ken Hatfield or Tommy West or Charlie Pell. Bowden led the program for 10 years and, while he didn't win a Natty, he was far from our worst coach. ON THE WAY OUT THE DOOR, he recommended Dabo (a position coach) for the job. He's been nothing but gracious after being unceremoniously fired mid-season. And, if he can still make a few bucks from talking about Clemson Football, then why is everybody so pissed?
He's a good guy and deserves a little more respect.

I just don't get all the hate for Bowden. I'm not saying he should be remembered as a legend or anything, but I don't get how he's so hated nearly 10 years later. He deserved to be fired when he was so I'm not debating that. However, I constantly see people say things like "Bowden set Clemson back several years." Do those people not remember how the program was before he got here? We were 3-8 the year before he got here with wins over Furman, 3-8 Maryland, and 1-10 South Carolina. Bowden was a huge reason for our facilty upgrades, and the reason Dabo is here. He also went like 7-2 against South Carolina. He didn't get us over the hump, but he certainly left the program in much better shape than it was in before he got here.

I don't think you will find any Clemson fans who hate Bowden.

But even the staunchest Bowden supporters can agree that his tenure was incredibly frustrating. The first few years were encouraging, and when Rich Rod left, so did most of the success. Sure, we signed a few nice recruits and won some big games during those 10 years, but we also lost some head scratchers. We were consistently inconsistent, and clearly plateaued.
I appreciate what he did for our program. He generally recruited good kids, pushed for facility upgrades, ran a clean program, and moved us from a 3 win team to a 7-8 win team. But he rubs me the wrong way with his personality. I can't tell if he is smug, arrogant, shy, or just a loner at heart. He definitely could've done more to endear himself to Clemson fans and alumni. I was never sure if he truly loved Clemson, or merely viewed the university as his employer.

Played for FGs instead of TDs which cost us so many close games. I think the negative comments have more to do with the underhanded praise he's giving Dabo. Makes it sound like Dabo's more of a figure head. Read the recent article by Chansi Stuckey. He's a great coach with awesome forward thinking not simply a great CEO.

Without him we wouldn't have Dabo. I'm grateful for his contributions at Clemson. He facilitated facility improvements. But these comments? Come on man, were they from 3 or 4 years ago?

3 things Tommy brought to the program...

1 - Saved us from the utterly bad to mediocre Tommy West years
2 - Was a fairly consistent Coot beater
3 - Beat his Dad on a fairly regular basis
